6. Schiller and Romanticism
To define romanticism is to attempt something which the romantics themselves insist cannot be done. But we can try to identify and then describe it, first pointing out what it is not. One stable element in romanticism has been its consistent rejection of its opposite, classicism. While no great piece of art has ever existed which did not contain elements of both romanticism and classicism, the partisans of these two different points of view have insisted that different emphases made it great. Where classicism emphasised analysis, objectivity harmony, wholeness, meaning, and discipline, romanticism stressed synthesis,subjectivity,disharmony, individuality,suggestiveness. and spontaneity. 2. Victories of Political Liberalism
As we have already suggested in the opening paragraphs of this chapter, the roots of political liberalism antedated the nineteenth century. The philosophic principles of this creed were based on earlier ideas such as natural rights and utilitarianism. Political liberals held that human actions to be moral must be voluntary, and that a society seeking to follow the laws of nature must cherish individual liberty. Since they believed human reason was capable of discerning these laws, liberals believed that enlightened self-interest was an accurate guide for political action. In the next chapter we will take note of the kinship which existed between political liberals and economic liberals. Here we need only to say that both envisaged the chief functions of the state as primarily protective of life, liberty, and property, and active mainly to check abuses and prevent license. [excerpt

Before either political liberalism or nationalism could become institutionalized, the Continent passed through a period of conservative reaction. Taking their cue from Edmund Burke, who as early as 1790 strove to discredit France\u27s great experiment by associating it with the excesses of reason and revolution, many people blamed liberalism for the quarter century of war, and chaos that followed. The Reign Terror in France, under the sway of Madame Guillotine, gave a connotation of horror to the slogan of liberty, equality, and fraternity, Conservativeminded folk tended to regard the abstract ideas of freedom, brotherhood, and a society without class distinctions as mere will-o\u27-the=wisps leading inevitably to anarchy. In the interests of orderly government, the sacred rights of property, and the very existence of Western Civilization itself, they therefore set their faces resolutely against any doctrine which carried the liberal taint. The host of the SN-less GRB 060505 in high resolution
The spiral host galaxy of GRB 060505 at z=0.089 was the site of a puzzling
long duration burst without an accompanying supernova. Studies of the burst
environment by Th\"one et al. (2008) suggested that this GRB came from the
collapse of a massive star and that the GRB site was a region with properties
different from the rest of the galaxy. We reobserved the galaxy in high spatial
resolution using the VIMOS integral-field unit (IFU) at the VLT with a spaxel
size of 0.67 arcsec. Furthermore, we use long slit high resolution data from
HIRES/Keck at two different slit positions covering the GRB site, the center of
the galaxy and an HII region next to the GRB region. We compare the properties
of different HII regions in the galaxy with the GRB site and study the global
and local kinematic properties of this galaxy. The resolved data show that the
GRB site has the lowest metallicity in the galaxy with around 1/3 Z_solar, but
its specific SFR (SSFR) of 7.4 M_solar/yr/L/L* and age (determined by the
Halpha EW) are similar to other HII regions in the host. The galaxy shows a
gradient in metallicity and SSFR from the bulge to the outskirts as it is
common for spiral galaxies. This gives further support to the theory that GRBs
prefer regions of higher star-formation and lower metallicity, which, in S-type
galaxies, are more easily found in the spiral arms than in the centre.
Kinematic measurements of the galaxy do not show evidence for large
perturbations but a minor merger in the past cannot be excluded. This study
confirms the collapsar origin of GRB060505 but reveals that the properties of
the HII region surrounding the GRB were not unique to that galaxy. Spatially
resolved observations are key to know the implications and interpretations of

Shared reading of children's interactive picture books
We report on a study of children and parents shared reading of interactive printed books. We investigated the differences between books with interactive features and books with expressive typography in order to evaluate which features within a book encouraged interaction between the reading participants and the book. 11 parent and child groups took part in the study that involved three observed reading sessions. From our observations we offer suggestions for the development of books and eBooks to encourage shared reading practices
Concurrent constraint programming with process mobility
We propose an extension of concurrent constraint programming with primitives for process migration within a hierarchical network, and we study its semantics. To this purpose, we first investigate a "pure " paradigm for process migration, namely a paradigm where the only actions are those dealing with transmissions of processes. Our goal is to give a structural definition of the semantics of migration; namely, we want to describe the behaviour of the system, during the transmission of a process, in terms of the behaviour of the components. We achieve this goal by using a labeled transition system where the effects of sending a process, and requesting a process, are modeled by symmetric rules (similar to handshaking-rules for synchronous communication) between the two partner nodes in the network. Next, we extend our paradigm with the primitives of concurrent constraint programming, and we show how to enrich the semantics to cope with the notions of environment and constraint store. Finally, we show how the operational semantics can be used to define an interpreter for the basic calculus.
Intrinsic spectra and energetics of BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Bursts with known redshifts
We present the main results of a study of spectral and energetics properties
of twelve gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with redshift estimates. All GRBs in our
sample were detected by BeppoSAX in a broad energy range (2-700 keV). From the
redshift estimates and the good-quality BeppoSAX time-integrated spectra we
deduce the main properties of GRBs in their cosmological rest frames. All
spectra in our sample are satisfactorily represented by the Band model with no
significant soft X-ray excesses or spectral absorptions. We find a positive
correlation between the estimated total (isotropic) energies in the 1-10000 keV
energy range (E_rad) and redshifts z. Interestingly, more luminous GRBs are
characterized also by larger peak energies E_p of their EF(E) spectra.
Furthermore, more distant GRBs appear to be systematically harder in the X-ray
band compared to GRBs with lower redshifts. We discuss how selection and data
truncation effects could bias our results and give possible explanations for

Probing the ISM Near Star Forming Regions with GRB Afterglow Spectroscopy: Gas, Metals, and Dust
We study the chemical abundances of the interstellar medium surrounding high
z gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) through analysis of the damped Lya systems (DLAs)
identified in afterglow spectra. These GRB-DLAs are characterized by large HI
column densities N(HI) and metallicities [M/H] spanning 1/100 to nearly solar,
with median [M/H]>-1. The majority of GRB-DLAs have [M/H] values exceeding the
cosmic mean metallicity of atomic gas at z>2, i.e. if anything, the GRB-DLAs
are biased to larger metallicity. We also observe (i) large [Zn/Fe] values
(>+0.6) and sub-solar Ti/Fe ratios which imply substantial differential
depletion, (ii) large a/Fe ratios suggesting nucleosynthetic enrichment by
massive stars, and (iii) low C^0/C^+ ratios (<10^{-4}). Quantitatively, the
observed depletion levels and C^0/C^+ ratios of the gas are not characteristic
of cold, dense HI clouds in the Galactic ISM. We argue that the GRB-DLAs
represent the ISM near the GRB but not gas directly local to the GRB (e.g. its
molecular cloud or circumstellar material). We compare these observations with
DLAs intervening background quasars (QSO-DLAs). The GRB-DLAs exhibit larger
N(HI) values, higher a/Fe and Zn/Fe ratios, and have higher metallicity than
the QSO-DLAs. We argue that the differences primarily result from
galactocentric radius-dependent differences in the ISM: GRB-DLAs preferentially
probe denser, more depleted, higher metallicity gaslocated in the inner few kpc
whereas QSO-DLAs are more likely to intersect the less dense, less enriched,
outer regions of the galaxy. Finally, we investigate whether dust obscuration
may exclude GRB-DLA sightlines from QSO-DLA samples; we find that the majority
of GRB-DLAs would be recovered which implies little observational bias against

Leading-Log Effects in the Resonance Electroweak Form Factors
We study log corrections to inelastic scattering at high Bjorken x for Q^2
from 1 to 21 GeV^2. At issue is the presence of log corrections, which can be
absent if high x scattering has damped gluon radiation. We find logarithmic
correction of the scaling curve extrapolated to low Q^2 improves the duality
between it and the resonance plus background data in the Delta region,
indicating log corrections exist in the data. However, at W > 2 GeV and high x,
the data shows a (1-x)^3 form. Log corrections in one situation but not in
