    Correlations in Ising chains with non-integrable interactions

    Two-spin correlations generated by interactions which decay with distance r as r^{-1-sigma} with -1 <sigma <0 are calculated for periodic Ising chains of length L. Mean-field theory indicates that the correlations, C(r,L), diminish in the thermodynamic limit L -> \infty, but they contain a singular structure for r/L -> 0 which can be observed by introducing magnified correlations, LC(r,L)-\sum_r C(r,L). The magnified correlations are shown to have a scaling form F(r/L) and the singular structure of F(x) for x->0 is found to be the same at all temperatures including the critical point. These conclusions are supported by the results of Monte Carlo simulations for systems with sigma =-0.50 and -0.25 both at the critical temperature T=Tc and at T=2Tc.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 5 eps figures in a separate uuencoded file, to appear in Phys.Rev.

    MCT2 is the main neuronal monocarboxylate transporter needed by neurons if they are to use lactate as an additional energy substrate. Previous evidence suggested that some MCT2 could be located in postsynaptic elements of glutamatergic synapses. Using post-embedding electron microscopic immunocytochemistry, it is demonstrated that MCT2 is present at postsynaptic density of asymmetric synapses, in the stratum radiatum of both rat hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions, as well as at parallel fibre-Purkinje cell synapses in mouse cerebellum. MCT2 levels were significantly lower at mossy fibre synapses on CA3 neurons, and MCT2 was almost absent from symmetric synapses on CA1 pyramidal cells. It could also be demonstrated using quantitative double-labeling immunogold cytochemistry that MCT2 and AMPA receptor GluR2/3 subunits have a similar postsynaptic distribution at asymmetric synapses with high levels expressed within the postsynaptic density. In addition, as for AMPA receptors, a significant proportion of MCT2 is located on vesicular membranes within the postsynaptic spine, forming an intracellular pool available for a putative postsynaptic endo/exocytotic trafficking at these excitatory synapses. Altogether, the data presented provide evidence for MCT2 expression in the postsynaptic density area at specific subsets of glutamatergic synapses, and also suggest that MCT2, like AMPA receptors, could undergo membrane trafficking

    Endogenous GABA controls oligodendrocyte lineage cell number, myelination, and CNS internode length

    Adjusting the thickness and internodal length of the myelin sheath is a mechanism for tuning the conduction velocity of axons to match computational needs. Interactions between oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) and developing axons regulate the formation of myelin around axons. We now show, using organotypic cerebral cortex slices from mice expressing eGFP in Sox10-positive oligodendrocytes, that endogenously released GABA, acting on GABAA receptors, greatly reduces the number of oligodendrocyte lineage cells. The decrease in oligodendrocyte number correlates with a reduction in the amount of myelination but also an increase in internode length, a parameter previously thought to be set by the axon diameter or to be a property intrinsic to oligodendrocytes. Importantly, while TTX block of neuronal activity had no effect on oligodendrocyte lineage cell number when applied alone, it was able to completely abolish the effect of blocking GABAA receptors, suggesting that control of myelination by endogenous GABA may require a permissive factor to be released from axons. In contrast, block of AMPA/KA receptors had no effect on oligodendrocyte lineage cell number or myelination. These results imply that, during development, GABA can act as a local environmental cue to control myelination and thus influence the conduction velocity of action potentials within the CNS.     Immunogold Detection of L-glutamate and D-serine in Small Synaptic-Like Microvesicles in Adult Hippocampal Astrocytes

    Glutamate and the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor ligand D-serine are putative gliotransmitters. Here, we show by immunogold cytochemistry of the adult hippocampus that glutamate and D-serine accumulate in synaptic-like microvesicles (SLMVs) in the perisynaptic processes of astrocytes. The estimated concentration of fixed glutamate in the astrocytic SLMVs is comparable to that in synaptic vesicles of excitatory nerve terminals (∼45 and ∼55 mM, respectively), whereas the D-serine level is about 6 mM. The vesicles are organized in small spaced clusters located near the astrocytic plasma membrane. Endoplasmic reticulum is regularly found in close vicinity to SLMVs, suggesting that astrocytes contain functional nanodomains, where a local Ca2+ increase can trigger release of glutamate and/or D-serin

    Statistical mechanics of image restoration and error-correcting codes

    We develop a statistical-mechanical formulation for image restoration and error-correcting codes. These problems are shown to be equivalent to the Ising spin glass with ferromagnetic bias under random external fields. We prove that the quality of restoration/decoding is maximized at a specific set of parameter values determined by the source and channel properties. For image restoration in mean-field system a line of optimal performance is shown to exist in the parameter space. These results are illustrated by solving exactly the infinite-range model. The solutions enable us to determine how precisely one should estimate unknown parameters. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to see how far the conclusions from the infinite-range model are applicable to the more realistic two-dimensional case in image restoration.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, ReVTe

    Pulmonary Arterial Stent Implantation in an Adult with Williams Syndrome

    We report a 38-year-old patient who presented with pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular dysfunction due to pulmonary artery stenoses as a manifestation of Williams syndrome, mimicking chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. The patient was treated with balloon angioplasty and stent implantation. Short-term follow-up showed a good clinical result with excellent patency of the stents but early restenosis of the segments in which only balloon angioplasty was performed. These stenoses were subsequently also treated successfully by stent implantation. Stent patency was observed 3 years after the first procedure

    Canonical Solution of Classical Magnetic Models with Long-Range Couplings

    We study the canonical solution of a family of classical nvectorn-vector spin models on a generic dd-dimensional lattice; the couplings between two spins decay as the inverse of their distance raised to the power α\alpha, with α<d\alpha<d. The control of the thermodynamic limit requires the introduction of a rescaling factor in the potential energy, which makes the model extensive but not additive. A detailed analysis of the asymptotic spectral properties of the matrix of couplings was necessary to justify the saddle point method applied to the integration of functions depending on a diverging number of variables. The properties of a class of functions related to the modified Bessel functions had to be investigated. For given nn, and for any α\alpha, dd and lattice geometry, the solution is equivalent to that of the α=0\alpha=0 model, where the dimensionality dd and the geometry of the lattice are irrelevant.Comment: Submitted for publication in Journal of Statistical Physic

    Respiration and oxygen transport in soybean nodules

    The respiration rate of individual soybean ( Glycine max Merr.) nodules was measured as a function of pO 2 and temperature. At 23°, as the pO 2 was increased from 0.1 to 0.9 atm, there was a linear increase in respiration rate. At 13°, similar results were obtained, except that there was an abrupt saturation of respiration at approximately 0.5 atm pO 2 . When measurements were made on the same nodule, the rate of increase in respiration with pO 2 was the same at 13° and 23°. Additional results were that 5% CO in the gas phase had no effect on respiration, except for a small decrease in the pO 2 at which respiration became saturated. Also, nodules still attached to the soybean root displayed the same respiratory behavior as detached nodules. A model for oxygen transport in the nodule is presented which explains these results quantitatively. The essence of the model is that the respiration rate of the central tissue of the nodule is almost entirely determined by the rate of oxygen diffusion to the respiratory enzymes.     Critical Behavior of O(n)-symmetric Systems With Reversible Mode-coupling Terms: Stability Against Detailed-balance Violation

    We investigate nonequilibrium critical properties of O(n)O(n)-symmetric models with reversible mode-coupling terms. Specifically, a variant of the model of Sasv\'ari, Schwabl, and Sz\'epfalusy is studied, where violation of detailed balance is incorporated by allowing the order parameter and the dynamically coupled conserved quantities to be governed by heat baths of different temperatures TST_S and TMT_M, respectively. Dynamic perturbation theory and the field-theoretic renormalization group are applied to one-loop order, and yield two new fixed points in addition to the equilibrium ones. The first one corresponds to Θ=TS/TM=\Theta = T_S / T_M = \infty and leads to model A critical behavior for the order parameter and to anomalous noise correlations for the generalized angular momenta; the second one is at Θ=0\Theta = 0 and is characterized by mean-field behavior of the conserved quantities, by a dynamic exponent z=d/2z = d / 2 equal to that of the equilibrium SSS model, and by modified static critical exponents. However, both these new fixed points are unstable, and upon approaching the critical point detailed balance is restored, and the equilibrium static and dynamic critical properties are recovered.Comment: 18 pages, RevTeX, 1 figure included as eps-file; submitted to Phys.
