Testing the Disk Regulation Paradigm with Spitzer Observations. II. A Clear Signature of Star-Disk Interaction in NGC 2264 and the Orion Nebula Cluster
Observations of PMS star rotation periods reveal slow rotators in young
clusters of various ages, indicating that angular momentum is somehow removed
from these rotating masses. The mechanism by which spin-up is regulated as
young stars contract has been one of the longest-standing problems in star
formation. Attempts to observationally confirm the prevailing theory that
magnetic interaction between the star and its circumstellar disk regulates
these rotation periods have produced mixed results. In this paper, we use the
unprecedented disk identification capability of the Spitzer Space Telescope to
test the star-disk interaction paradigm in two young clusters, NGC 2264 and the
Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We show that once mass effects and sensitivity
biases are removed, a clear increase in the disk fraction with period can be
observed in both clusters across the entire period range populated by cluster
members. We also show that the long-period peak (P 8 days) of the bimodal
distribution observed for high-mass stars in the ONC is dominated by a
population of stars possessing a disk, while the short-period peak (P 2
days) is dominated by a population of stars without a disk. Our results
represent the strongest evidence to date that star-disk interaction regulates
the angular momentum of these young stars. This study will make possible
quantitative comparisons between the observed period distributions of stars
with and without a disk and numerical models of the angular momentum evolution

Rapid prototyping and fast user trial of multimedia broadcast and cellular services
This paper presents the results of fast user trial of multimedia services that are enabled when a mobile terminal has access to converged services over digital broadcast and mobile telecommunications networks. It first describes the motivations behind developing this system and describes the service scenarios that benefit most from it. It then provides an overview of the service components of the test case scenario. Finally, it presents the results of fast user trials on end users of the services that were developed. Emergence of long-range order in BaTiO3 from local symmetry-breaking distortions
By using a symmetry motivated basis to evaluate local distortions against
pair distribution function data (PDF), we show without prior bias, that the
off-centre Ti displacements in the archetypal ferroelectric BaTiO3 are zone
centred and rhombohedral-like in nature across its known ferroelectric and
paraelectric phases. With our newly-gained insight we construct a simple Monte
Carlo (MC) model which captures our main experimental findings and demonstrate
how the rich crystallographic phase diagram of BaTiO3 emerges from correlations
of local symmetry-breaking distortions alone. Our results strongly support the
order-disorder picture for these phase transitions, but can also be reconciled
with the soft-mode theory of BaTiO3 that is supported by some spectroscopic

Magnetic and vibrational properties of high-entropy alloys
The magnetic properties of high-entropy alloys based on equimolar FeCoCrNi were investigated using vibrating sample magnetometry to determine their usefulness in high-temperature magnetic applications. Nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements were performed to evaluate the vibrational entropy of the ^(57)Fe atoms and to infer chemical order. The configurational and vibrational entropy of alloying are discussed as they apply to these high-entropy alloys
Distinguishing the opponents in the prisoner dilemma in well-mixed populations
Here we study the effects of adopting different strategies against different
opponent instead of adopting the same strategy against all of them in the
prisoner dilemma structured in well-mixed populations. We consider an
evolutionary process in which strategies that provide reproductive success are
imitated and players replace one of their worst interactions by the new one. We
set individuals in a well-mixed population so that network reciprocity effect
is excluded and we analyze both synchronous and asynchronous updates. As a
consequence of the replacement rule, we show that mutual cooperation is never
destroyed and the initial fraction of mutual cooperation is a lower bound for
the level of cooperation. We show by simulation and mean-field analysis that
for synchronous update cooperation dominates while for asynchronous update only
cooperations associated to the initial mutual cooperations are maintained. As a
side effect of the replacement rule, an "implicit punishment" mechanism comes
up in a way that exploitations are always neutralized providing evolutionary
stability for cooperation
