    Mathematical analysis and simulations of the neural circuit for locomotion in lamprey

    We analyze the dynamics of the neural circuit of the lamprey central pattern generator. This analysis provides insight into how neural interactions form oscillators and enable spontaneous oscillations in a network of damped oscillators, which were not apparent in previous simulations or abstract phase oscillator models. We also show how the different behavior regimes (characterized by phase and amplitude relationships between oscillators) of forward or backward swimming, and turning, can be controlled using the neural connection strengths and external inputs

    Empirical research within the social scientific study of religion in general and within the psychology of religion in particular remains very conscious of the complex nature of its subject matter. Empirical research in this field needs to take cognisance of the many forms in which religion is expressed (say, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism) and the many facets within the forms (say, beliefs, behaviours and affiliation). Working in the 1970s, Francis (1978a; 1978b) advanced the view that the attitudinal dimension of religion offered a particularly fruitful basis for coordinating empirical enquiry into the correlates, antecedents and consequences of religiosity across the life span

    Effect of time dependent flight loads on JT9D-7 performance deterioration

    The results of a modal transient analysis of the engine/aircraft system are presented. The response of the JT9D to analytically simulated vertical gusts and landings was predicted using a NASTRAN finite element mathematical model of the JT9D/747 propulsion system. The NASTRAN finite element model of the propulsion system included engine structural models of the fan, low/high pressure compressors, diffuser/turbine cases, and high/low pressure rotors, as well as nacelle models of the inlet cowl, tailcone, and wing pylon. The analysis conducted predicts that an insignificant level of JT9D-7 performance deterioration would occur due to a typical vertical gust encounter or a typical revenue service landing. Analysis of a high sink rate landing with a heavy fuel load indicates the possibility of local wear, however, the lack of an accurate dynamic rotor/seal interference model precludes an accurate quantitative evaluation of performance change for this once-per-airframe-life event

    Supersonic turbulent boundary-layer flows with mass injection through slots and/or porous walls

    An implicit finite-difference method was used to solve the compressible boundary-layer equations, and to study the effects of mass transfer through porous plates, slots, and a combination of the two. The effects of the external pressure field were also included by using a global pressure interaction scheme. Two different eddy viscosity models were used for the slot and slot-porous combination cases: one was a two-layer model with inner and outer laws, and the other was a multi-layer model with as many as five separate layers. Results of the present method were compared with experimental data at a Mach number of 2.8. Comparisons of the skin friction reduction and Mach number profiles gave good to excellent agreement. Pressure interaction had little effect on the slot injection skin friction but increased the skin friction of the porous and slot-porous combination markedly

    The paralytic shellfish toxin profiles and global distribution of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum Halim

    A comprehensive review was undertaken of the distribution of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum Halim. The primary threat to humans caused by A. minutum is because of the production of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) which can accumulate in seafood vectors, which if consumed lead to the human condition known as paralytic shellfish poisoning. Within this work it became apparent that the known global spread of this important species has increased, either due to range expansion, as a consequence of improved or novel investigation, or as a combination of these factors. Those populations of A. minutum capable of producing PSTs display a range of different toxin profiles with differing saxitoxin derivatives or differing proportions of common toxins being present. As yet no genetic basis for these differences in toxin productivity has been isolated although there are currently 4 recognised clades within the A. minutum species the two principle clades being the Pacific and the Global. A novel analysis of A. minutum toxin profiles was undertaken by applying K means clustering to PST profiles extracted from the literature. This analysis generated 5 distinctive clusters, each relating to a statistically separable toxin profile. Interestingly examples of each of the two major clades had representatives from different toxin profile clusters. This suggests further, currently undetermined genetic separation or relatedness between clades, as the differences in the ITS region of the ribosome upon which the clades are based, does not seem to be coupled to the specifics of the toxin profile. It also raises the possibility that there is an environmental driver for the differing toxin profiles, although profiles clustered geographically in some cases in others they were either cosmopolitan or spatially isolated. This new approach offers an additional tool with which to examine the relationships between populations and target further genetic research

    The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay on the north slope of Alaska and the subsequent initial lease sale for rights to drill for oil on state land marked the beginning of a new era in the economy of the state. Construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline to carry oil 860 miles from the northern coast to the port of Valdez brought jobs to the state and increased personal income for many residents. When oil began to flow, the state began to receive revenues from royalty oil sales. Wealth from oil revenues made it possible for the state to support the development of Alaska's renewable resources. One of the resources considered was land which had been classified as having potential for production of agricultural products . There had been attempts in the past by the Federal and state governments to increase substantially agricultural production in Alaska, but none were completely successful (Stone 1950, Burton 1971, Snodgrass et a!. 1982, Lewis et al. 1987)

    CMB lensing and primordial squeezed non-Gaussianity

    Squeezed primordial non-Gaussianity can strongly constrain early-universe physics, but it can only be observed on the CMB after it has been gravitationally lensed. We give a new simple non-perturbative prescription for accurately calculating the effect of lensing on any squeezed primordial bispectrum shape, and test it with simulations. We give the generalization to polarization bispectra, and discuss the effect of lensing on the trispectrum. We explain why neglecting the lensing smoothing effect does not significantly bias estimators of local primordial non-Gaussianity, even though the change in shape can be >~10%. We also show how tau_NL trispectrum estimators can be well approximated by much simpler CMB temperature modulation estimators, and hence that there is potentially a ~10-30% bias due to very large-scale lensing modes, depending on the range of modulation scales included. Including dipole sky modulations can halve the tau_NL error bar if kinematic effects can be subtracted using known properties of the CMB temperature dipole. Lensing effects on the g_NL trispectrum are small compared to the error bar. In appendices we give the general result for lensing of any primordial bispectrum, and show how any full-sky squeezed bispectrum can be decomposed into orthogonal modes of distinct angular dependence.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; minor edits to match published versio
