Determination of Backscattering Sources in Various Targets
The objectives of this research are to identify the primary contributors to 10 GHz radar backscatter from various natural and man-made surfaces and objects, and to use this information in developing new and better models for the scatter. When the true sources are known for the scattering that leads to variation in intensity on radar images, the images (and sets of them) may be interpreted more meaningfully in terms of the variation of parameters of interest for science or application. For example, better interpretation of vegetation images may be possible for yield forecasting and stress detection
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of non-stoichiometric superconducting NbB2+x
Polycrystalline samples of NbB2+x with nominal composition (B/Nb) = 2.0, 2.1,
2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
The spectra revealed Nb and B oxides on the surface of the samples, mainly B2O3
and Nb2O5. After Ar ion etching the intensity of Nb and B oxides decreased. The
Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels associated with the chemical states (B/Nb) were
identified and they do not change with etching time. The Binding Energy of the
Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels increase as boron content increases, suggesting a
positive chemical shift in the core levels. On the other hand, analysis of
Valence Band spectra showed that the contribution of the Nb 4d states slightly
decreased while the contribution of the B 2p(pi) states increased as the boron
content increased. As a consequence, the electronic and superconducting
properties were substantially modified, in good agreement with band-structure
calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
X-ray Polarization Signatures of Compton Scattering in Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables
Compton scattering within the accretion column of magnetic cataclysmic
variables (mCVs) can induce a net polarization in the X-ray emission. We
investigate this process using Monte Carlo simulations and find that
significant polarization can arise as a result of the stratified flow structure
in the shock-ionized column. We find that the degree of linear polarization can
reach levels up to ~8% for systems with high accretion rates and low
white-dwarf masses, when viewed at large inclination angles with respect to the
accretion column axis. These levels are substantially higher than previously
predicted estimates using an accretion column model with uniform density and
temperature. We also find that for systems with a relatively low-mass white
dwarf accreting at a high accretion rate, the polarization properties may be
insensitive to the magnetic field, since most of the scattering occurs at the
base of the accretion column where the density structure is determined mainly
by bremsstrahlung cooling instead of cyclotron cooling.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRA
Integrated Vertical Bloch Line (VBL) memory
Vertical Bloch Line (VBL) Memory is a recently conceived, integrated, solid state, block access, VLSI memory which offers the potential of 1 Gbit/sq cm areal storage density, data rates of hundreds of megabits/sec, and submillisecond average access time simultaneously at relatively low mass, volume, and power values when compared to alternative technologies. VBLs are micromagnetic structures within magnetic domain walls which can be manipulated using magnetic fields from integrated conductors. The presence or absence of BVL pairs are used to store binary information. At present, efforts are being directed at developing a single chip memory using 25 Mbit/sq cm technology in magnetic garnet material which integrates, at a single operating point, the writing, storage, reading, and amplification functions needed in a memory. The current design architecture, functional elements, and supercomputer simulation results are described which are used to assist the design process
Two-dimensional Poisson Trees converge to the Brownian web
The Brownian web can be roughly described as a family of coalescing
one-dimensional Brownian motions starting at all times in and at all
points of . It was introduced by Arratia; a variant was then studied by
Toth and Werner; another variant was analyzed recently by Fontes, Isopi, Newman
and Ravishankar. The two-dimensional \emph{Poisson tree} is a family of
continuous time one-dimensional random walks with uniform jumps in a bounded
interval. The walks start at the space-time points of a homogeneous Poisson
process in and are in fact constructed as a function of the point
process. This tree was introduced by Ferrari, Landim and Thorisson. By
verifying criteria derived by Fontes, Isopi, Newman and Ravishankar, we show
that, when properly rescaled, and under the topology introduced by those
authors, Poisson trees converge weakly to the Brownian web.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure. This version corrects an error in the previous

Intrinsic electron-doping in nominal "non-doped" superconducting (La,Y)CuO thin films grown by dc magnetron sputtering
The superconducting nominal "non-doped" (LYCO) thin
films are successfully prepared by dc magnetron-sputtering and in situ
post-annealing in vacuum. The best more than 13K is achieved in the
optimal LYCO films with highly pure c-axis oriented T'-type structure. In the
normal state, the quasi-quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity, the
negative Hall coefficient and effect of oxygen content in the films are quite
similar to the typical Ce-doped T'-214 cuprates, suggesting that T'-LYCO shows
the electron-doping nature like known n-type cuprates, and is not a band
superconductor as proposed previously. The charge carriers are considered to be
induced by oxygen deficiency.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Application of Navier-Stokes analysis to stall flutter
A solution procedure was developed to investigate the two-dimensional, one- or two-dimensional flutter characteristics of arbitrary airfoils. This procedure requires a simultaneous integration in time of the solid and fluid equations of motion. The fluid equations of motion are the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations, solved in a body-fitted moving coordinate system using an approximate factorization scheme. The solid equations of motion are integrated in time using an Euler implicit scheme. Flutter is said to occur if small disturbances imposed on the airfoil attitude lead to divergent oscillatory motions at subsequent times. The flutter characteristics of airfoils in subsonic speed at high angles of attack and airfoils in high subsonic and transonic speeds at low angles of attack are investigated. The stall flutter characteristics are also predicted using the same procedure
Two Higgs Bi-doublet Left-Right Model With Spontaneous P and CP Violation
A left-right symmetric model with two Higgs bi-doublet is shown to be a
consistent model for both spontaneous P and CP violation. The flavor changing
neutral currents can be suppressed by the mechanism of approximate global U(1)
family symmetry. We calculate the constraints from neural meson mass
difference and demonstrate that a right-handed gauge boson
contribution in box-diagrams with mass well below 1 TeV is allowed due to a
cancellation caused by a light charged Higgs boson with a mass range GeV. The contribution to can be suppressed from
appropriate choice of additional CP phases appearing in the right-handed
Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The model is also found to be fully
consistent with mass difference , and the mixing-induced CP
violation quantity , which is usually difficult for the
model with only one Higgs bi-doublet. The new physics beyond the standard model
can be directly searched at the colliders LHC and ILC.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected, 1 figure added, published

High resolution, low temperature photoabsorption cross-section of C2H2 with application to Saturn's atmosphere
New laboratory observations of the VUV absorption cross-section of C2H2, obtained under physical conditions approximating stratospheres of the giant planets, were combined with IUE observations of the albedo of Saturn, for which improved data reduction techniques have been used, to produce new models for that atmosphere. When the effects of C2H2 absorption are accounted for, additional absorption by other molecules is required. The best-fitting model also includes absorption by PH3, H2O, C2H6 and CH4. A small residual disagreement near 1600 A suggests that an additional trace species may be required to complete the model
