    We propose an approach to realize quantum gates with electron spins localized in a semiconductor that uses double occupancy to advantage. With a fast (non-adiabatic) time control of the tunnelling, the probability of double occupancy is first increased and then brought back exactly to zero. The quantum phase built in this process can be exploited to realize fast quantum operations. We illustrate the idea focusing on the half-swap operation, which is the key two-qubit operation needed to build a CNOT gate.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    New Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs with Disks in Lupus

    Using the Infrared Array Camera and the Multiband Imaging Photometer aboard the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}, we have obtained images of the Lupus 3 star-forming cloud at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, and 24 \micron. We present photometry in these bands for the 41 previously known members that are within our images. In addition, we have identified 19 possible new members of the cloud based on red 3.6-8.0 \micron colors that are indicative of circumstellar disks. We have performed optical spectroscopy on 6 of these candidates, all of which are confirmed as young low-mass members of Lupus 3. The spectral types of these new members range from M4.75 to M8, corresponding to masses of 0.2-0.03 M⊙M_\odot for ages of ∼1\sim1 Myr according to theoretical evolutionary models. We also present optical spectroscopy of a candidate disk-bearing object in the vicinity of the Lupus 1 cloud, 2M 1541-3345, which Jayawardhana & Ivanov recently classified as a young brown dwarf (M∼0.03M\sim0.03 M⊙M_\odot) with a spectral type of M8. In contrast to their results, we measure an earlier spectral type of M5.75±\pm0.25 for this object, indicating that it is probably a low-mass star (M∼0.1M\sim0.1 M⊙M_\odot). In fact, according to its gravity-sensitive absorption lines and its luminosity, 2M 1541-3345 is older than members of the Lupus clouds (τ∼1\tau\sim1 Myr) and instead is probably a more evolved pre-main-sequence star that is not directly related to the current generation of star formation in Lupus.Comment: 18 pages, 3 tables, 6 figure

    Remote Preparation of Single-Photon "Hybrid" Entangled and Vector-Polarization States

    Quantum teleportation faces increasingly demanding requirements for transmitting large or even entangled systems. However, knowledge of the state to be transmitted eases its reconstruction, resulting in a protocol known as remote state preparation. A number of experimental demonstrations to date have been restricted to single-qubit systems. We report the remote preparation of two-qubit "hybrid" entangled states, including a family of vector-polarization beams. Our single-photon states are encoded in the photon spin and orbital angular momentum. We reconstruct the states by spin-orbit state tomography and transverse polarization tomography. The high fidelities achieved for the vector-polarization states opens the door to optimal coupling of down-converted photons to other physical systems, such as an atom, as required for scalable quantum networks, or plasmons in photonic nanostructures.Comment: Letter: 4 pages, 1 figure.     Compressing nearly hard sphere fluids increases glass fragility

    We use molecular dynamics to investigate the glass transition occurring at large volume fraction, phi, and low temperature, T, in assemblies of soft repulsive particles. We find that equilibrium dynamics in the (phi, T) plane obey a form of dynamic scaling in the proximity of a critical point at T=0 and phi=phi_0, which should correspond to the ideal glass transition of hard spheres. This glass point, `point G', is distinct from athermal jamming thresholds. A remarkable consequence of scaling behaviour is that the dynamics at fixed phi passes smoothly from that of a strong glass to that of a very fragile glass as phi increases beyond phi_0.     Kinetic models of ion transport through a nanopore

    Kinetic equations for the stationary state distribution function of ions moving through narrow pores are solved for a number of one-dimensional models of single ion transport. Ions move through pores of length LL, under the action of a constant external field and of a concentration gradient. The interaction of single ions with the confining pore surface and with water molecules inside the pore are modelled by a Fokker-Planck term in the kinetic equation, or by uncorrelated collisions with thermalizing centres distributed along the pore. The temporary binding of ions to polar residues lining the pore is modelled by stopping traps or energy barriers. Analytic expressions for the stationary ion current through the pore are derived for several versions of the model, as functions of key physical parameters. In all cases, saturation of the current at high fields is predicted. Such simple models, for which results are analytic, may prove useful in the study of the current/voltage relations of ion channels through membranes
