Quasielastic Scattering at MiniBooNE Energies
We present our description of neutrino induced charged current quasielastic
scattering (CCQE) in nuclei at energies relevant for the MiniBooNE experiment.
In our framework, the nucleons, with initial momentum distributions according
to the Local Fermi Gas model, move in a density- and momentum-dependent mean
field potential. The broadening of the outgoing nucleons due to nucleon-nucleon
interactions is taken into account by spectral functions. Long range (RPA)
correlations renormalizing the electroweak strength in the medium are also
incorporated. The background from resonance excitation events that do not lead
to pions in the final state is also predicted by propagating the outgoing
hadrons with the Giessen semiclassical BUU model in coupled channels (GiBUU).
We achieve a good description of the shape of the CCQE Q2 distribution
extracted from data by MiniBooNE, thanks to the inclusion of RPA correlations,
but underestimate the integrated cross section when the standard value of MA =
1 GeV is used. Possible reasons for this mismatch are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop

Neutrino induced pion production at MiniBooNE and K2K energies
We investigate charged and neutral current neutrino-induced incoherent pion
production off nuclei within the GiBUU model at energies relevant for the
MiniBooNE and K2K experiments. Special attention is paid to the entanglement
between measured CCQE and CC1pi+ cross sections. We further give predictions
and compare to recent data measured at MiniBooNE.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of 6th International Workshop on

Acculturation, Familism and MotherâDaughter Relations Among Suicidal and Non-Suicidal Adolescent Latinas
We examined the role of acculturation, familism and Latina motherâdaughter relations in suicide attempts by comparing 65 adolescents with recent suicide attempts and their mothers to 75 teens without any attempts and their mothers. Attempters and non-attempters were similar in acculturation and familistic attitudes but attempters report significantly less mutuality and communication with their mothers than non-attempters. Mothers of attempters reported lower mutuality and communication with their daughters than mothers of non-attempters. Small increments in mutuality decreased the probability of a suicide attempt by 57%. Acculturation and familism do not appear to play major roles in suicide attempts but relational factors may. Instituting school-based psychoeducational groups for young Latinas, particularly in middle school, and their parents, separately and jointly, and focusing on raising effective communication and mutuality between parents and adolescent daughters are important primary prevention strategies
Discovery of a wide companion near the deuterium burning mass limit in the Upper Scorpius association
We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium burning mass limit
located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of 4.6+/-0.1 arcsec
(projected distance of ~ 670 AU) from UScoCTIO108, a brown dwarf of the very
young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and
spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7
and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association,
showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the
comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age
range of the association, are 60+/-20 and 14^{+2}_{-8} MJup, respectively. The
existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that
the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet
formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they did not
probably form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 table
Control of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, a neglected disease: results of a control programme in Satipo Province, Peru.
Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) is an important health problem in many rural areas of Latin America, but there are few data on the results of programmatic approaches to control the disease. We report the results of a control programme in San Martin de Pangoa District, which reports one of the highest prevalences of MCL in Peru. For 2 years (2001--2002), the technicians at the health post were trained in patient case management, received medical support and were supplied with antimonials. An evaluation after 2 years showed the following main achievements: better diagnosis of patients, who were confirmed by microscopy in 34% (82/240) of the cases in 2001 and 60% of the cases (153/254) in 2002; improved follow-up during treatment: 237 of 263 (90%) patients who initiated an antimonial therapy ended the full treatment course; improved follow-up after treatment: 143 of 237 (60%) patients who ended their full treatment were correctly monitored during the required period of 6 (cutaneous cases) or 12 (mucosal cases) months after the end of treatment. These achievements were largely due to the human and logistical resources made available, the constant availability of medications and the close collaboration between the Ministry of Health, a national research institute and an international non-governmental organization. At the end of this period, the health authorities decided to register a generic brand of sodium stibogluconate, which is now in use. This should allow the treatment of a significant number of additional patients, while saving money to invest in other facets of the case management
