Educational Ethics in Academic Environment: Medical Students' Perspectives
Background and Objective: Educational ethics imply values such as honesty, reliance on one's own personal
effort, not to abuse the efforts of others, and respect the dignity and respect for others. Students are faced
with different situations in which they show various moral and immoral behaviors. This study aimed to
explore medical students' viewpoints and experiences at Golestan University of Medical Sciences about
ethics in academic environment in 2013.
Materials and Methods: In this qualitative study a purposive sampling was used with maximum variation
and 12 medical students participated in the research. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews. At
least an open question "When I say ethics in education or educational environment, what comes to your
mind" was repeated in all the interviews. The interviews recorded and transcribed line by line and then
analyzed according to "conventional content analysis" method.
Results: "Respecting teacher dignity", "preserving dignity of classroom", "respecting and maintaining
dignity for classmates", "seeking for knowledge and sciences” emerged as the main themes of the current
study.
Conclusion: University students considered learning environment as a sacred place; conforming its expected
rules and ethics would be mandatory. Abnormal behavior causes not only loss of students dignity but also
could be harmful to the calmness of educational atmosphere and may evoke different unpleasant pessimistic
ideas about such academic environment
A numerical method for functional Hammerstein integro-differential equations
In this paper, a numerical method is presented to solve functional Hammerstein integro-differential equations. The presented method combines the successive approximations method with trapezoidal quadrature rule and natural cubic spline interpolation to solve the mentioned equations. The existence and uniqueness of the problem is also investigated. The convergence and numerical stability of the problem are proved, and finally, the accuracy of the method is verified by presenting some numerical computations
Synthesis and Optimization of Reversible Circuits - A Survey
Reversible logic circuits have been historically motivated by theoretical
research in low-power electronics as well as practical improvement of
bit-manipulation transforms in cryptography and computer graphics. Recently,
reversible circuits have attracted interest as components of quantum
algorithms, as well as in photonic and nano-computing technologies where some
switching devices offer no signal gain. Research in generating reversible logic
distinguishes between circuit synthesis, post-synthesis optimization, and
technology mapping. In this survey, we review algorithmic paradigms ---
search-based, cycle-based, transformation-based, and BDD-based --- as well as
specific algorithms for reversible synthesis, both exact and heuristic. We
conclude the survey by outlining key open challenges in synthesis of reversible
and quantum logic, as well as most common misconceptions.Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
Flood characteristic and fluid rock interactions of a supercritical CO2, brine, rock system: South West Hub, Western Australia
Chemical and/or physical interactions between the storage rock and injected and in-situ created solutes are expected to occur during many underground CO2 storage projects. The intensity of the reactions, however, depends on the abundance of susceptible minerals (e.g. carbonates, clays) in the pore space of the host rock. Such interactions may impact on the multiphase flow characteristics of the underground fluids-rock system over short as well as long time frames. In this research the in-situ multiphase flow characteristics of four sandstone samples have been investigated using a set of laboratory measurements. The samples tested were taken from the Wonnerup Member of the Triassic Lesueur Sandstone which is under consideration as a storage formation in the South-West Hub CO2 geo-sequestration site in Western Australia. All the samples tested show favourable characteristics in terms of storage capacity in the form of residual capillary trapping with residual CO2 saturation varying between 23% and 43%. They underwent a degree of alteration to their petrophysical characteristics which was most significantly pronounced in the case of their absolute gas permeability which showed drops of 25%–60% in the post-flood samples. Formation damage by fines migration is proposed as a mechanism for the observed reduction in permeability. The fines are believed to have originated from the kaolinite particles present in the pore space of the samples
Time-Domain and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography of Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in MS Patients and Healthy Controls
Objective. The aim of this study was to compare retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) between spectral-domain (SD-) and time-domain optical coherence tomography (TD-OCT) in MS patients and healthy controls (HC). Furthermore, RNFLT between MS eyes with and without optic neuritis (ON) and HC should be explored. Finally, the relationship between RNFLT, disease duration, EDSS, and disease modifying therapy (DMT) should be established. Design. Prospective, cross-sectional study. Participants. 28 MS patients and 35 HC. Methods. Both groups underwent TD- and SD-OCT measurements. RFNLT was correlated between the two machines and between MS eyes with and without ON and HC. Furthermore, RNFLT was correlated to disease duration, EDSS and DMT. Results. A strong correlation (Pearson's r = 0.921, P < 0.001), but a statistically significant difference of 2 μm (P < 0.001), was found between the two devices. RNFLT was significantly different between MS eyes with history of ON (mean RFNLT (SD) 72.21 μm (15.83 μm)), MS eyes without history of ON 93.03 μm (14.25 μm), and HC 99.07 μm (7.23 μm) (P < 0.001). Conclusions. The measurements between different generation of OCT machines are not interchangeable, which should be taken into account if comparing results between different machines and switching OCT machine in longitudinal studies
