    Constraints on the duality relation from ACT cluster data

    The cosmic distance-duality relation (CDDR), dL(z)(1+z)2/dA(z)=ηd_L(z) (1 + z)^{2}/d_{A}(z) = \eta, where η=1\eta = 1 and dL(z)d_L(z) and dA(z)d_A(z) are, respectively, the luminosity and the angular diameter distances, holds as long as the number of photons is conserved and gravity is described by a metric theory. Testing such hypotheses is, therefore, an important task for both cosmology and fundamental physics. In this paper we use 91 measurements of the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters recently reported by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) survey along with type Ia supernovae observations of the Union2.1 compilation to probe a possible deviation from the value η=1\eta = 1. Although in agreement with the standard hyphothesis, we find that this combination of data tends to favor negative values of η\eta which might be associated with some physical processes increasing the number of photons and modifying the above relation to dL<(1+z)2dAd_L < (1+z)^2d_A.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 table

    No-horizon theorem for spacetimes with spacelike G1 isometry groups

    We consider four-dimensional spacetimes (M,g)(M,{\mathbf g}) which obey the Einstein equations G=T{\mathbf G}={\mathbf T}, and admit a global spacelike G1=RG_{1}={\mathbb R} isometry group. By means of dimensional reduction and local analyis on the reduced (2+1) spacetime, we obtain a sufficient condition on T{\mathbf T} which guarantees that (M,g)(M,{\mathbf g}) cannot contain apparent horizons. Given any (3+1) spacetime with spacelike translational isometry, the no-horizon condition can be readily tested without the need for dimensional reduction. This provides thus a useful and encompassing apparent horizon test for G1G_{1}-symmetric spacetimes. We argue that this adds further evidence towards the validity of the hoop conjecture, and signals possible violations of strong cosmic censorship.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, uses IOP package; published in Class.     Quantum transitions of the XY model with long-range interactions on the inhomogenous periodic chain

    The isotropic XY model (s=1/2)(s=1/2) in a transverse field, with uniform long-range interactions among the transverse components of the spins, on the inhomogeneous periodic chain, is studied. The model, composed of NN segments with nn different exchange interactions and magnetic moments, is exactly solved by introducing the integral gaussian transformation and the generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation, which reduce the problem to the diagonalization of a finite matrix of nnth order. The quantum transitions induced by the transverse field are determined by analyzing the induced magnetization of the cell and the equation of state. The phase diagrams for the quantum transitions, in the space generated by the transverse field and the interaction parameters, are presented. As expected, the model presents multiple, first- and second-order quantum transitions induced by the transverse field, and it corresponds to an extension of the models recently considered by the authors. Detailed results are also presented, at T=0, for the induced magnetization and isothermal susceptibility χTzz\chi_{T}^{zz} as function of the transverse field.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Ranking and clustering of nodes in networks with smart teleportation

    Random teleportation is a necessary evil for ranking and clustering directed networks based on random walks. Teleportation enables ergodic solutions, but the solutions must necessarily depend on the exact implementation and parametrization of the teleportation. For example, in the commonly used PageRank algorithm, the teleportation rate must trade off a heavily biased solution with a uniform solution. Here we show that teleportation to links rather than nodes enables a much smoother trade-off and effectively more robust results. We also show that, by not recording the teleportation steps of the random walker, we can further reduce the effect of teleportation with dramatic effects on clustering.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    A sensitive microextraction by packed sorbent-based methodology combined with ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography as a powerful technique for analysis of biologically active flavonols in wines

    A new approach based on microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) and reversed-phase high-throughput ultra high pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) method that uses a gradient elution and diode array detection to quantitate three biologically active flavonols in wines, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol, is described. In addition to performing routine experiments to establish the validity of the assay to internationally accepted criteria (selectivity, linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy), experiments are included to assess the effect of the important experimental parameters such as the type of sorbent material (C2, C8, C18, SIL, and C8/SCX), number of extraction cycles (extract-discard), elution volume, sample volume, and ethanol content, on the MEPS performance. The optimal conditions of MEPS extraction were obtained using C8 sorbent and small sample volumes (250 μL) in five extraction cycle and in a short time period (about 5 min for the entire sample preparation step). Under optimized conditions, excellent linearity View the MathML source(Rvalues2>0.9963), limits of detection of 0.006 μg mL−1 (quercetin) to 0.013 μg mL−1 (myricetin) and precision within 0.5–3.1% were observed for the target flavonols. The average recoveries of myricetin, quercetin and kaempferol for real samples were 83.0–97.7% with relative standard deviation (RSD, %) lower than 1.6%. The results obtained showed that the most abundant flavonol in the analyzed samples was myricetin (5.8 ± 3.7 μg mL−1). Quercetin (0.97 ± 0.41 μg mL−1) and kaempferol (0.66 ± 0.24 μg mL−1) were found in a lower concentration. The optimized MEPSC8 method was compared with a reverse-phase solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure using as sorbent a macroporous copolymer made from a balanced ratio of two monomers, the lipophilic divinylbenzene and the hydrophilic N-vinylpyrrolidone (Oasis HLB) were used as reference. MEPSC8 approach offers an attractive alternative for analysis of flavonols in wines, providing a number of advantages including highest extraction efficiency (from 85.9 ± 0.9% to 92.1 ± 0.5%) in the shortest extraction time with low solvent consumption, fast sample throughput, more environmentally friendly and easy to perform

    The anisotropic XY model on the inhomogeneous periodic chain

    The static and dynamic properties of the anisotropic XY-model (s=1/2)(s=1/2) on the inhomogeneous periodic chain, composed of NN cells with nn different exchange interactions and magnetic moments, in a transverse field h,h, are determined exactly at arbitrary temperatures. The properties are obtained by introducing the Jordan-Wigner fermionization and by reducing the problem to a diagonalization of a finite matrix of nthnth order. The quantum transitions are determined exactly by analyzing, as a function of the field, the induced magnetization 1/n\sum_{m=1}^{n}\mu_{m}\left (jj denotes the cell, mm the site within the cell, μm\mu_{m} the magnetic moment at site mm within the cell) and the spontaneous magnetization 1/n∑m=1n<Sj,mx,>1/n\sum_{m=1}^{n}\left< S_{j,m}^{x},\right> which is obtained from the correlations <Sj,mxSj+r,mx>\left< S_{j,m}^{x}S_{j+r,m}^{x}\right> for large spin separations. These results, which are obtained for infinite chains, correspond to an extension of the ones obtained by Tong and Zhong(\textit{Physica B} \textbf{304,}91 (2001)). The dynamic correlations, <Sj,mz(t)Sj′,m′z(0)>\left< S_{j,m}^{z}(t)S_{j^{\prime},m^{\prime}}^{z}(0)\right>, and the dynamic susceptibility, χqzz(ω),\chi_{q}^{zz}(\omega), are also obtained at arbitrary temperatures. Explicit results are presented in the limit T=0, where the critical behaviour occurs, for the static susceptibility χqzz(0)\chi_{q}^{zz}(0) as a function of the transverse field hh, and for the frequency dependency of dynamic susceptibility χqzz(ω)\chi_{q}^{zz}(\omega).Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 01 table.     Phase diagram of a random-anisotropy mixed-spin Ising model

    We investigate the phase diagram of a mixed spin-1/2--spin-1 Ising system in the presence of quenched disordered anisotropy. We carry out a mean-field and a standard self-consistent Bethe--Peierls calculation. Depending on the amount of disorder, there appear novel transition lines and multicritical points.
