Comment on ``Intermittent Synchronization in a Pair of Coupled Chaotic Pendula"
The main aim of this comment is to emphasize that the conditional Lyapunov
exponents play an important role in distinguishing between intermittent and
persistent synchronization, when the analytic criteria for asymptotic stability
are not uniformly obeyed.Comment: 2 pages, RevTeX 4, 1 EPS figur
Fundamental study of flow field generated by rotorcraft blades using wide-field shadowgraph
The vortex trajectory and vortex wake generated by helicopter rotors are visualized using a wide-field shadowgraph technique. Use of a retro-reflective Scotchlite screen makes it possible to investigate the flow field generated by full-scale rotors. Tip vortex trajectories are visible in shadowgraphs for a range of tip Mach number of 0.38 to 0.60. The effect of the angle of attack is substantial. At an angle of attack greater than 8 degrees, the visibility of the vortex core is significant even at relatively low tip Mach numbers. The theoretical analysis of the sensitivity is carried out for a rotating blade. This analysis demonstrates that the sensitivity decreases with increasing dimensionless core radius and increases with increasing tip Mach number. The threshold value of the sensitivity is found to be 0.0015, below which the vortex core is not visible and above which it is visible. The effect of the optical path length is also discussed. Based on this investigation, it is concluded that the application of this wide-field shadowgraph technique to a large wind tunnel test should be feasible. In addition, two simultaneous shadowgraph views would allow three-dimensional reconstruction of vortex trajectories
Atmospheric Pollution Control in Coke Ovens
Production of iron through BF route is still a dominant route and coke is a major raw material and energy source for the blast furnaces. The process of coal carbonization in slot ovens in one of the major sources of atmospheric pollution in an Integrated Steel Plant. Coke making proc-ess involves coal preparation, carbonization and coke handling operations. To meet the demand of Blast Furnaces of SAIL plants, about 12 million tones of coal are carbon-ized every year in 26 operating coke oven batteries in the different plants.
The coke making process is a well-documented source of pollution in terms of gaseous and particulate emissions. CPCB norms for emissions from the different sources of
coke oven have been notified through gazette notificat-ions. However, it is very important that the methodology and frequency of measurement are to be standardized for all the coke oven plants in India.
SAIL is well aware of the problems of pollution in coke oven batteries and a number of measures have been intro-duced to meet the challenges of emission control from
coke ovens viz. smokeless charging, water-jet cleaning of doors, introduction of selective crushing/groupwise crus-hing of coals, new door design, water sealing of A.P. caps, introduction of tall ovens etc. The paper discusses some of these measures adopted in coke ovens for the control of pollution
Transformations of q-boson and q-fermion algebras
We investigate the algebras satisfied by q-deformed boson and fermion
oscillators, in particular the transformations of the algebra from one form to
another. Based on a specific algebra proposed in recent literature, we show
that the algebra of deformed fermions can be transformed to that of undeformed
standard fermions. Furthermore we also show that the algebra of q-deformed
fermions can be transformed to that of undeformed standard bosons.Comment: 7 pages, RevTe
The Genealogy of Ideology: Predicting Agreement and Persuasive Memes in the U.S. Courts of Appeals
We employ machine learning techniques to identify common characteristics and features from cases in the US courts of appeals that contribute in determining dissent. Our models were able to predict vote alignment with an average F1 score of 73%, and our results show that the length of the opinion, the number of citations in the opinion, and voting valence, are all key factors in determining dissent. These results indicate that certain high level characteristics of a case can be used to predict dissent. We also explore the influence of dissent using seating patterns of judges, and our results show that raw counts of how often two judges sit together plays a role in dissent. In addition to the dissents, we analyze the notion of memetic phrases occurring in opinions - phrases that see a small spark of popularity but eventually die out in usage - and try to correlate them to dissent

Vafa-Witten Estimates for Compact Symmetric Spaces
We give an optimal upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the untwisted

A Formaldehyde Exposure Assessment Tool for Occupants of FEMA Temporary Housing Units
The report outlines the methodology used to develop a web-based tool to assess the formaldehyde exposure of the occupants of Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) temporary housing units (THUs) after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. Linear regression models were built using available data to retrospectively estimate the indoor temperature and relative humidity, formaldehyde emission factors and concentration, and hence the formaldehyde exposures. The interactive web-tool allows the user to define the inputs to the model to evaluate formaldehyde exposures for different scenarios
