Interpretation of water quality data from the Nansemond and Chuckatuck estuaries with respect to point and nonpoint sources of pollution : a report to the Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency

.Recently the Nansemond and Chuckatuck basins have been designated as a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration area. This designation means that federal funds will be available to share the costs incurred by farmers when they implement the so-called Best Management Practices on their croplands, pastures, and feedlots. One requirement of the federal funding agency is that local governmental bodies monitor the quality of the waters in the area to document changes. One element in that monitoring effort is the study of conditions in the estuaries of these two water bodies. The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency contracted with VIMS to conduct field studies during 1982 and 1983 under the provisions of their grant (No. P003085-04) from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. This report presents and summarizes the findings of those field studies

Do correlations create an energy gap in electronic bilayers? Critical analysis of different approaches

This paper investigates the effect of correlations in electronic bilayers on the longitudinal collective mode structure. We employ the dielectric permeability constructed by means of the classical theory of moments. It is shown that the neglection of damping processes overestimates the role of correlations. We conclude that the correct account of damping processes leads to an absence of an energy gap.Comment: 4 page

Sediment processes monitoring data report for calendar year 1989

    Get PDF
Pairs of particle interceptor traps were deployed at three depths - 3, 6, and 9 meters with deployment intervals typically lasting about two weeks. At times of deployment and retrieval, profiles of water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content were made and water samples were collected at trap depths. Bottom sediments also were collected and a sub-sample of the surficial sediments taken. Water samples, bottom sediments, and the materials collected in the traps were returned to the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences for analysis. The data collected during both 1988 and 1989 are presented in the appendices. Both 1988 and 1989 data sets have been archived in ASCII and IBM PC spreadsheet formats. Individuals desiring the data in ASCII or spreadsheet formats (Lotus or Quattro) should contact one of the authors

Pseudo-random operators of the circular ensembles

We demonstrate quantum algorithms to implement pseudo-random operators that closely reproduce statistical properties of random matrices from the three universal classes: unitary, symmetric, and symplectic. Modified versions of the algorithms are introduced for the less experimentally challenging quantum cellular automata. For implementing pseudo-random symplectic operators we provide gate sequences for the unitary part of the time-reversal operator.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published PR
