    Exact static nondegenerate stripe and checkerboard ground states are obtained in a two-dimensional generalized periodic Anderson model, for a broad concentration range below quarter filling. The random droplet states, also present in the degenerate ground state, are eliminated by extending the Hamiltonian with terms of different physical origin such as dimerization, periodic charge displacements, density waves, or distorsion lines.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Near Zone Navier-Stokes Analysis of Heavy Quark Jet Quenching in an N\mathcal{N} =4 SYM Plasma

    The near zone energy-momentum tensor of a supersonic heavy quark jet moving through a strongly-coupled N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM plasma is analyzed in terms of first-order Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics. It is shown that the hydrodynamical description of the near quark region worsens with increasing quark velocities. For realistic quark velocities, v=0.99v=0.99, the non-hydrodynamical region is located at a narrow band surrounding the quark with a width of approximately 3/Ď€T3/\pi T in the direction parallel to the quark's motion and with a length of roughly 10/Ď€T10/\pi T in the perpendicular direction. Our results can be interpreted as an indication of the presence of coherent Yang-Mills fields where deviation from hydrodynamics is at its maximum. In the region where hydrodynamics does provide a good description of the system's dynamics, the flow velocity is so small that all the nonlinear terms can be dropped. Our results, which are compatible with the thermalization timescales extracted from elliptic flow measurements, suggest that if AdS/CFT provides a good description of the RHIC system, the bulk of the quenched jet energy has more than enough time to locally thermalize and become encoded in the collective flow. The resulting flow pattern close to the quark, however, is shown to be considerably different than the superposition of Mach cones and diffusion wakes observed at large distances.Comment: new revised version, 11 figures, as published in PR

    Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation bellow the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to transition energy loss and medium induced Bremsstrahlung. Heavy quark medium induced radiative energy loss is derived to all orders in opacity, (L/λg)n(L/\lambda_g)^n.     Universal Flow-Driven Conical Emission in Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

    The double-peak structure observed in soft-hard hadron correlations is commonly interpreted as a signature for a Mach cone generated by a supersonic jet interacting with the hot and dense medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that it can also arise due to averaging over many jet events in a transversally expanding background. We find that the jet-induced away-side yield does not depend on the details of the energy-momentum deposition in the plasma, the jet velocity, or the system size. Our claim can be experimentally tested by comparing soft-hard correlations induced by heavy-flavor jets with those generated by light-flavor jets.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Behind the times: a brief history of motivation discourse in problem-based learning

    That idea that problem-based learning (PBL) is more motivating that traditional education has been prevalent since the inception of PBL at McMaster University in the late 1960s. Evidencing this through empirical research, however, has proven to be a lot more problematic. This paper retraces how the discourse on motivation started from a laymen's conception in the early days of PBL, and slowly evolved into a field of scientific inquiry in the 1980s and 1990s. However, looking at the evolution of motivation theory over the same period, we show that motivation discourse in the burgeoning literature on motivation and PBL remained largely wedded to the laymen's approach, and failed to catch up with the new achievement-goal theory and self-determination theory approaches. This paper proceeds to analyse the explosion of studies on PBL and motivation after 2000, acknowledging efforts to move away from anecdotal accounts and provide theoretical grounding to the research. However, once again, we show that the majority of the research employed outdated motivational measures that do not fully grasp the complexity of contemporary motivation theory. The paper concludes on the observation that single-course and curriculum-wide research interventions have yielded no conclusive results on the effect of PBL on intrinsic motivation, and that future research should therefore seek to use up-to-date motivational constructs in more targeted interventions

    Motives that Mediate the Associations Between Relationship Satisfaction, Orgasmic Difficulty, and the Frequency of Faking Orgasm

    INTRODUCTION: Faking orgasm by women reportedly occurs quite frequently, with both relationship characteristics and orgasmic difficulty being significant predictors. AIM: We explored women's motives that might mediate the associations between orgasmic difficulty and relationship satisfaction on the one hand, with the frequency of faking orgasm on the other. METHODS: In a study of 360 Hungarian women who reported “ever” faking orgasm during partnered sex, we assessed the direct and indirect (mediated) associations between orgasmic difficulty, relationship satisfaction, and the frequency of faking orgasm. OUTCOMES: Determination of motives that mediate the association between orgasmic difficulty and the frequency of faking orgasm, and the association between relationship satisfaction and the frequency of faking orgasm. RESULTS: Increased orgasmic difficulty was directly related to increased frequency of faking orgasm (β = 0.37; P < .001), and each variable itself was related to a number of motives for faking orgasm. However, the only motive assessed in our study that mediated the relationship between orgasmic difficulty and the frequency of faking orgasm was insecurity about being perceived as abnormal or dysfunctional (indirect effect: β = 0.13; P < .001). A similar pattern emerged with relationship satisfaction and frequency of faking orgasm. These two variables were directly related in that lower relationship satisfaction predicted higher frequency of faking orgasm (β = -0.15; P = .008). Furthermore, while each variable itself was related to a number of motives for faking orgasm, the only motive assessed in our study that mediated the relationship between the 2 variables was insecurity about being perceived as abnormal or dysfunctional (indirect effect: β = -0.06; P = .008). CLINICAL TRANSLATION: Insecurity related to being perceived as abnormal or deficient, along with sexual communication, should be addressed in women with a history of faking orgasm but who want to cease doing so. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: The sample was relatively large and the online survey adhered to best practices. Nevertheless, bias may result in sample characteristics when recruitment is achieved primarily through social media. In addition, the cross-sectional sample prevented causal determination and represented Western-based values. CONCLUSIONS: The associations between orgasmic difficulty and faking orgasm, and between relationship satisfaction and faking orgasm, are both direct and indirect (mediated). The primary motive for mediating the indirect association between the predictor variables and the frequency of faking orgasm was the insecurity about being perceived as deficient or abnormal.
