On Myosin II dynamics in the presence of external loads
We address the controversial hot question concerning the validity of the
loose coupling versus the lever-arm theories in the actomyosin dynamics by
re-interpreting and extending the phenomenological washboard potential model
proposed by some of us in a previous paper. In this new model a Brownian motion
harnessing thermal energy is assumed to co-exist with the deterministic swing
of the lever-arm, to yield an excellent fit of the set of data obtained by some
of us on the sliding of Myosin II heads on immobilized actin filaments under
various load conditions. Our theoretical arguments are complemented by accurate
numerical simulations, and the robustness of the model is tested via different
choices of parameters and potential profiles.Comment: 6 figures, 8 tables, to appear on Biosystem
Scalable Parallel Numerical Constraint Solver Using Global Load Balancing
We present a scalable parallel solver for numerical constraint satisfaction
problems (NCSPs). Our parallelization scheme consists of homogeneous worker
solvers, each of which runs on an available core and communicates with others
via the global load balancing (GLB) method. The parallel solver is implemented
with X10 that provides an implementation of GLB as a library. In experiments,
several NCSPs from the literature were solved and attained up to 516-fold
speedup using 600 cores of the TSUBAME2.5 supercomputer.Comment: To be presented at X10'15 Worksho
Addressing decision making for remanufacturing operations and design-for-remanufacture
Remanufacturing is a process of returning a used product to at least original equipment manufacturer original performance specification from the customers' perspective and giving the resultant product a warranty that is at least equal to that of a newly manufactured equivalent. This paper explains the need to combine ecological concerns and economic growth and the significance of remanufacturing in this. Using the experience of an international aero-engine manufacturer it discusses the impact of the need for sustainable manufacturing on organisational business models. It explains some key decision-making issues that hinder remanufacturing and suggests effective solutions. It presents a peer-validated, high-level design guideline to assist decision-making in design in order to support remanufacturing. The design guide was developed in the UK through the analysis of selections of products during case studies and workshops involving remanufacturing and conventional manufacturing practitioners as well as academics. It is one of the initial stages in the development of a robust design for remanufacture guideline
On the Large Time Behavior of Solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations Associated with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions
In this article, we study the large time behavior of solutions of first-order
Hamilton-Jacobi Equations, set in a bounded domain with nonlinear Neumann
boundary conditions, including the case of dynamical boundary conditions. We
establish general convergence results for viscosity solutions of these
Cauchy-Neumann problems by using two fairly different methods : the first one
relies only on partial differential equations methods, which provides results
even when the Hamiltonians are not convex, and the second one is an optimal
control/dynamical system approach, named the "weak KAM approach" which requires
the convexity of Hamiltonians and gives formulas for asymptotic solutions based
on Aubry-Mather sets
Scalable Parallel Numerical CSP Solver
We present a parallel solver for numerical constraint satisfaction problems
(NCSPs) that can scale on a number of cores. Our proposed method runs worker
solvers on the available cores and simultaneously the workers cooperate for the
search space distribution and balancing. In the experiments, we attained up to
119-fold speedup using 256 cores of a parallel computer.Comment: The final publication is available at Springe
Electron Depletion Due to Bias of a T-Shaped Field-Effect Transistor
A T-shaped field-effect transistor, made out of a pair of two-dimensional
electron gases, is modeled and studied. A simple numerical model is developed
to study the electron distribution vs. applied gate voltage for different gate
lengths. The model is then improved to account for depletion and the width of
the two-dimensional electron gases. The results are then compared to the
experimental ones and to some approximate analytical calculations and are found
to be in good agreement with them.Comment: 16 pages, LaTex (RevTex), 8 fig
regularity of solutions of degenerate fully non-linear elliptic equations
In the present paper, a class of fully non-linear elliptic equations are
considered, which are degenerate as the gradient becomes small. H\"older
estimates obtained by the first author (2011) are combined with new Lipschitz
estimates obtained through the Ishii-Lions method in order to get
estimates for solutions of these equations.Comment: Submitte
High-energy magnetic excitations in overdoped LaSrCuO studied by neutron and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering
We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray
scattering (RIXS) at the Cu- edge to study high-energy magnetic
excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped
LaSrCuO with ( K) and
(non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two
techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections,
we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for . Although
the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi,
pi) direction agree with the dispersion relation of the spin-wave in the
non-doped LaCuO (LCO), which is consistent with the previous RIXS
results of cuprate superconductors. Using RIXS at the Cu- edge, we have
measured the dispersion relations of the so-called paramagnon mode along both
(pi, pi) and (pi, 0) directions. Although in both directions the neutron and
RIXS data connect with each other and the paramagnon along (pi, 0) agrees well
with the LCO spin-wave dispersion, the paramagnon in the (pi, pi) direction
probed by RIXS appears to be less dispersive and the excitation energy is lower
than the spin-wave of LCO near (pi/2, pi/2). Thus, our results indicate
consistency between neutron inelastic scattering and RIXS, and elucidate the
entire magnetic excitation in the (pi, pi) direction by the complementary use
of two probes. The polarization dependence of the RIXS profiles indicates that
appreciable charge excitations exist in the same energy range of magnetic
excitations, reflecting the itinerant character of the overdoped sample. A
possible anisotropy in the charge excitation intensity might explain the
apparent differences in the paramagnon dispersion in the (pi, pi) direction as
detected by the X-ray scattering.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
