    Many hands make light work: Collaborative CLIL Activities for university courses in Medieval funerary Archaeology

    This paper describes the activities performed by the students of the course of funerary archaeology held at the Division of Palaeopathology of Pisa University in collaboration with the Institute for Computational Linguistics (ILC) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa in the period April-June 2014. The lessons, which used a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, were aimed at studying the funerary beliefs and burial practices in Italy and England in the Middle Ages. The 2014 course followed on from the courses of the year 2012 (focused on the more general issue of taphonomy; primary and secondary burials; single, double, or multiple burials), and 2013 (which examined the world of the ancient Romans and their burial customs of cremation and inhumation). The lessons were conducted by using extracts from self-contained specialized texts that were simple to read and that offered the basic concepts of medieval funerary archaeology. The students were supported by a reference text for funerary archaeology, which established the correct nomenclature to use when describing bodies, grave goods and tombs. Powerpoint slide presentations helped students break up the monotony of the text work and made the material more interesting and engaging. The slides were used to illustrate different types of burials in filled or empty spaces; the position of burials in both rural and urban environments; the disposition of the limbs in the burial; the rise of the Monasteries in the early Middle Ages and of the religious Orders of the Dominicans and Franciscans in the late Middle Ages. Each student was responsible for researching and reporting on a particular topic, and was supported by the use of information and communication techniques. Particular attention was devoted to the Books of Hours, important illuminated medieval manuscripts (containing psalms, short prayers and biblical quotations) that marked the different parts of the day and that were specifically composed for wealthy people. Classroom activities ranged from the simpler multi-matching and gap-filling exercises to the more complex tasks of providing definitions for given words, creating mind-maps, enriching a bilingual English-Italian glossary and providing contextualized examples for an English grammar book. Educational videos from the BBC or other channels and pertaining to the topics treated during the lessons were projected each time and were followed by direct questioning and more general conversation, to help students gain proficiency in oral communication. In the last three years, the Italian students from Pisa University have been working in collaboration with those of Ohio University on an excavation project carried out at the Field School in Medieval Archaeology and Bioarchaeology at Badia Pozzeveri (Lucca, Italy), to which the prestigious International journal SCIENCE dedicated a special issue and cover in December 2013. Finally, multidisciplinary elements were also included in the courses, by exploiting the information extracted from videos related to disciplines other than funerary archaeology, for example a BBC Channel 4 video describing the British meals of the day, the origins of which date back to medieval times

    A higher Angiogenin expression is associated with a non-nuclear Maspin location in laryngeal carcinoma

    Objectives. In numerous malignancies, angiogenin (ANG) and Maspin are important proangiogenic and antiangiogenic regulators, respectively. The aim of this study was to identify potential relationships between the biological roles of these two proteins in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Methods. Immunohistochemical staining for ANG and Maspin was performed on specimens from 76 consecutive LSCC patients treated with surgery alone, considering the subcellular pattern of Maspin expression. Univariate and multivariate statistical models were used for prognostic purposes. Results. On univariate analysis, a different level of ANG expression was seen for patients stratified by subcellular Maspin expression pattern: the mean ANG expression was higher in cases with a nonnuclear MASPIN expression than in those with a nuclear pattern (P=0.002). Disease-free survival (DFS; in months) differed significantly when patients were stratified by N stage (P=0.01). Patients whose Maspin expression was nonnuclear (i.e., it was cytoplasmic or there was none) had a significantly higher recurrence rate (P<0.001), and shorter DFS (P=0.01) than those with a nuclear Maspin pattern. The mean ANG expression was significantly higher in cases with loco-regional recurrent disease (P=0.007); and patients with an ANG expression 655.0% had a significantly shorter DFS than those with an ANG expression <5.0% (P=0.007). On multivariate analysis, ANG expression 655.0% was a significant, independent, negative prognostic factor in terms of DFS (P=0.041). Conclusion. Our results support the hypothesis that a higher ANG expression is associated with a nonnuclear Maspin expression pattern in patients with LSCC. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between the ANG and Maspin pathways, and their potential diagnostic and therapeutic role in LSCC

    Soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation

    We study a general class of line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation by investigating the Wronskian form of its tau-function. We show that, in addition to previously known line-soliton solutions, this class also contains a large variety of new multi-soliton solutions, many of which exhibit nontrivial spatial interaction patterns. We also show that, in general, such solutions consist of unequal numbers of incoming and outgoing line solitons. From the asymptotic analysis of the tau-function, we explicitly characterize the incoming and outgoing line-solitons of this class of solutions. We illustrate these results by discussing several examples.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figure

    The skulls of Borgo Cerreto (Perugia): medical, surgical, and anatomical activity of Baronio Vincenzi (XVII century)

    In the Sixties of the last century the vault of a 17th century private chapel was opened, revealing three isolated skulls with evidence of surgical and anatomical activity. The chapel was built by Baronio Vincenzi, who lived and practiced medicine in Borgo Cerreto, a village in the province of Perugia, between the 16th and the 17th century. The skull bc 01 belongs to an adult male, aged 25-35 years. It shows a hole on the left front-parietal region (30 x 31 mm), that can be identified as the result of a skull trepanation. The margins of the lesion are regularly smoothed and inclined internally and the diplopic tissues result almost completely obliterated by a cicatricial bone. A bone splinter (10 x 8 mm), completely reabsorbed, can be observed on the right side of the hole. These findings are the proof of a long survival of the subject. X-ray examination confirms a regular process of ossification, without infection. Trepanation was performed with a Hippocratic trypanon, largely used in cranial surgery of Modern Age. The specimen bc 02 is without skullcap and the right upper part of the face; it belongs to an adult male, 25-30 years aged. The cuts were produced by a bone saw with a thin blade. The choice of these regions suggests the willingness to study the basal skull, the right eye cavity and the paranasal sinuses. The skull bc 03 consists only in a skullcap of an adult individual, which shows the signs of a bone saw. In conclusion, the recovery of a trepanned skull, at present the first specimen of this type recovered so far in Umbria, together with two others skulls with the signs of postmortem examination, inside the Vincenzi family vault can be probably related to the professional activity of Baronio. He was an experienced surgeon and a skilled anatomist, who certainly experienced the empirical surgery of the nearby surgical School of Preci, famous throughout Europe for the treatment of urinary bladder stones, cataract as well as the ability in skull trepanation

    OPTIMAL PROPERTIES OF SINGLE CONCAVE FRICTION PENDULUM BEARINGS FOR THE ISOLATION OF BRIDGES SUBJECTED TO FAR FIELD RECORDS

    The present study focuses on the analysis of the seismic performance of isolated bridges, equipped with single concave friction pendulum (FPS) bearings. The bridge is modelled through a six-degree-of-freedom system considering two FPS bearings placed on top of the rigid abutment and the elastic pier. The six equations of motion are analytically solved in order to obtain the response parameters normalized with respect to the peak ground acceleration-to-velocity ratio (PGA/PGV). In addition, a parametric analysis is conducted by varying some bridge properties. All these different bridges are then subjected to a set of 30 far field records having low and high PGA/PGV ratios to assess the seismic performance

    Dangling-bond charge qubit on a silicon surface

    Two closely spaced dangling bonds positioned on a silicon surface and sharing an excess electron are revealed to be a strong candidate for a charge qubit. Based on our study of the coherent dynamics of this qubit, its extremely high tunneling rate ~ 10^14 1/s greatly exceeds the expected decoherence rates for a silicon-based system, thereby overcoming a critical obstacle of charge qubit quantum computing. We investigate possible configurations of dangling bond qubits for quantum computing devices. A first-order analysis of coherent dynamics of dangling bonds shows promise in this respect.Comment: 17 pages, 3 EPS figures, 1 tabl

    Paleopathological study of Mammuthus meridionalis of Madonna della Strada (L’Aquila)

    A skeleton of a male, 50-55 years old Mammuthus meridionalis, dated to the Pleistocene and conserved at the Spanish Fort in L’Aquila (Italy), showed a broken left tusk, in association with the presence of a deep (15x20 cm) bone erosion, involving the dental alveolus and the premaxillary bone, in close proximity to the maxillary sinus and the nasal cavity. During gross examination, small samples from three representative areas of the eroded bone were obtained. Thin sections were made and the specimens were examined under plane and polarized light, using a high resolution microscope with an incorporated digital camera. Microscopical study revealed the intra vitam origin of the lesions, characterized by the presence of woven bone fibers, typical of the early phases of bone remodeling, and lamellar bone with dilated and remodeled Haversian systems. The gross and histological findings were consistent with an osteomyelitis with bone sequestration, caused by a localized blunt trauma or, more likely, resulting from an ascending, post-traumatic chronic pulpitis, due to the tusk fracture occurred during an accident or interspecies fights. The histological exam excluded the involvement of granulomatous inflammation (e.g. tuberculosis) or neoplasia. A disease process of at least several months in duration may be hypothesized, as suggested by the histologically visible bone remodeling. A long survival of the animal after tusk loss may also be supposed, since alteration of masticatory function with altered molar teeth consumption and postural changes (i.e. atlantoaxial fusion), resulting from asymmetric weight distribution, were observed. In this study, the application of (paleo)histological techniques proved to be fundamental in order to establish the nature of bone lesions detected on archeological samples, also providing a good case for studying skull trauma and shedding light on the life history of these large mammals

    Signing at the beginning versus at the end does not decrease dishonesty

    Honest reporting is essential for society to function well. However, people frequently lie when asked to provide information, such as misrepresenting their income to save money on taxes. A landmark finding published in PNAS [L. L. Shu, N. Mazar, F. Gino, D. Ariely, M. H. Bazerman, *Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA.* 109, 15197–15200 (2012)] provided evidence for a simple way of encouraging honest reporting: asking people to sign a veracity statement at the beginning instead of at the end of a self-report form. Since this finding was published, various government agencies have adopted this practice. However, in this project, we failed to replicate this result. Across five conceptual replications (*n* = 4,559) and one highly powered, preregistered, direct replication (*n* = 1,235) conducted with the authors of the original paper, we observed no effect of signing first on honest reporting. Given the policy applications of this result, it is important to update the scientific record regarding the veracity of these results
