Compliant hydrodynamic fluid journal bearing
An air bearing structure is described that prevents destructive bending moments within the top foil. Welds are eliminated by mounting the top bearing foil in the bearing cartridge sleeve without using a space block. Tabs or pins at the end of the top bearing foil are restrained by slots or stops formed in the cartridge sleeve. These structural members are free to move in a direction normal to the shaft while being restrained from movement in the direction of shaft rotation
Effect of water injection and off scheduling of variable inlet guide vanes, gas generator speed and power turbine nozzle angle on the performance of an automotive gas turbine engine
The Chrysler/ERDA baseline automotive gas turbine engine was used to experimentally determine the power augmentation and emissions reductions achieved by the effect of variable compressor and power engine geometry, water injection downstream of the compressor, and increases in gas generator speed. Results were dependent on the mode of variable geometry utilization. Over 20 percent increase in power was accompanied by over 5 percent reduction in SFC. A fuel economy improvement of at least 6 percent was estimated for a vehicle with a 75 kW (100 hp) engine which could be augmented to 89 kW (120 hp) relative to an 89 Kw (120 hp) unaugmented engine
Deformation-induced accelerated dynamics in polymer glasses
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the effects of
deformation on the segmental dynamics in an aging polymer glass. Individual
particle trajectories are decomposed into a series of discontinuous hops, from
which we obtain the full distribution of relaxation times and displacements
under three deformation protocols: step stress (creep), step strain, and
constant strain rate deformation. As in experiments, the dynamics can be
accelerated by several orders of magnitude during deformation, and the history
dependence is entirely erased during yield (mechanical rejuvenation). Aging can
be explained as a result of the long tails in the relaxation time distribution
of the glass, and similarly, mechanical rejuvenation is understood through the
observed narrowing of this distribution during yield. Although the relaxation
time distributions under deformation are highly protocol specific, in each case
they may be described by a universal acceleration factor that depends only on

Simulations of aging and plastic deformation in polymer glasses
We study the effect of physical aging on the mechanical properties of a model
polymer glass using molecular dynamics simulations. The creep compliance is
determined simultaneously with the structural relaxation under a constant
uniaxial load below yield at constant temperature. The model successfully
captures universal features found experimentally in polymer glasses, including
signatures of mechanical rejuvenation. We analyze microscopic relaxation
timescales and show that they exhibit the same aging characteristics as the
macroscopic creep compliance. In addition, our model indicates that the entire
distribution of relaxation times scales identically with age. Despite large
changes in mobility, we observe comparatively little structural change except
for a weak logarithmic increase in the degree of short-range order that may be
correlated to an observed decrease in aging with increasing load.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure
Methodology for urban rail and construction technology research and development planning
A series of transit system visits, organized by the American Public Transit Association (APTA), was conducted in which the system operators identified the most pressing development needs. These varied by property and were reformulated into a series of potential projects. To assist in the evaluation, a data base useful for estimating the present capital and operating costs of various transit system elements was generated from published data. An evaluation model was developed which considered the rate of deployment of the research and development project, potential benefits, development time and cost. An outline of an evaluation methodology that considered benefits other than capital and operating cost savings was also presented. During the course of the study, five candidate projects were selected for detailed investigation; (1) air comfort systems; (2) solid state auxiliary power conditioners; (3) door systems; (4) escalators; and (5) fare collection systems. Application of the evaluation model to these five examples showed the usefulness of modeling deployment rates and indicated a need to increase the scope of the model to quantitatively consider reliability impacts
Test results of the Chrysler upgraded automotive gas turbine engine: Initial design
The upgraded engine as built to the original design was deficient in power and had excessive specific fuel consumption. A high instrumented version of the engine was tested to identify the sources of the engine problems. Analysis of the data shows the major problems to be low compressor and power turbine efficiency and excessive interstage duct losses. In addition, high HC and CO emission were measured at idle, and high NOx emissions at high energy speeds
