    POLARIZED INFRARED SPECTRA OF AZOBENZENE

Author Institution: Naval Research LaboratoryPolarized infrared spectra of solid azobenzene are presented for the frequency interval, 670 to 5000cm−15000 cm^{-1}. Data are given for oriented specimens in which the (001) and (010) planes are perpendicular to the incident energy. The observed directions of the transition moments for the class A1A_{1} and B1B_{1} vibrations of the phenyl ring are 6 to 24 degrees removed from the directions predicted on the basis of isolated phenyl ring vibrations. Factor group analysis of the polarization data was not as successful as was the group frequency analysis
