An increased prevalence of self-reported allergic rhinitis in major Chinese cities from 2005 to 2011
Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) has increased worldwide in recent decades. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of self-reported AR and profiles of AR-related comorbidities in the adult population of China over time.
Methods: This study surveyed residents of 18 major cities in mainland China. Telephone interviews were conducted with study participants after sampling target telephone numbers by random digit dialing. The questions asked during telephone interviews were based on those included in validated questionnaires and focused on topics regarding AR, nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), acute/chronic rhinosinusitis (ARS/CRS), asthma, and atopic dermatitis (AD).
Results: During 2011, a total of 47216 telephone interviews were conducted, and the overall response rate was 77.5%. When compared with the AR prevalence in 11 cities surveyed in 2005, there was a significant increase in self-reported adult AR in eight of those cities (P<0.01). In 2011, the standardized prevalence of self-reported adult AR in the 18 cities was 17.6%. The concentration of SO2 was positively correlated with the prevalence of AR (r=0.504, P=0.033). A multiple regression model showed that the absolute change in household yearly income was significantly associated with the change in the prevalence of AR (R-2=0.68), after adjusting for PM10, SO2, NO2, temperature, and humidity. The overall prevalences of NAR, ARS, CRS, asthma, and AD in the general population were 16.4%, 5.4%, 2.1%, 5.8%, and 14%, respectively.
Conclusion: During a 6-year period, there was a significant increase in the prevalence of self-reported AR in the general Chinese adult population. The incidence of AR being accompanied by rhinosinusitis, asthma, or AD was significantly higher among individuals having self-reported AR compared with the general population

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0
Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII
experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The
result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous
measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, RevTex
Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays
K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by
BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be
B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is
compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the
charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S
K_L and psi'-->K_S K_L.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
First observation of psi(2S)-->K_S K_L
The decay psi(2S)-->K_S K_L is observed for the first time using psi(2S) data
collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESII) at the Beijing Electron
Positron Collider (BEPC); the branching ratio is determined to be
B(psi(2S)-->K_S K_L) = (5.24\pm 0.47 \pm 0.48)\times 10^{-5}. Compared with
J/psi-->K_S K_L, the psi(2S) branching ratio is enhanced relative to the
prediction of the perturbative QCD ``12%'' rule. The result, together with the
branching ratios of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs
(\pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the
three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Study of psi(2S) decays to X J/psi
Using J/psi -> mu^+ mu^- decays from a sample of approximately 4 million
psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector, the branching fractions of
psi(2S) -> eta J/psi, pi^0 pi^0 J/psi, and anything J/psi normalized to that of
psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi are measured. The results are B(psi(2S) -> eta
J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.098 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.010, B(psi(2S) ->
pi^0 pi^0 J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.570 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.026, and
B(psi(2S) -> anything J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 1.867 \pm 0.026
\pm 0.055.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Signatures of arithmetic simplicity in metabolic network architecture
Metabolic networks perform some of the most fundamental functions in living
cells, including energy transduction and building block biosynthesis. While
these are the best characterized networks in living systems, understanding
their evolutionary history and complex wiring constitutes one of the most
fascinating open questions in biology, intimately related to the enigma of
life's origin itself. Is the evolution of metabolism subject to general
principles, beyond the unpredictable accumulation of multiple historical
accidents? Here we search for such principles by applying to an artificial
chemical universe some of the methodologies developed for the study of genome
scale models of cellular metabolism. In particular, we use metabolic flux
constraint-based models to exhaustively search for artificial chemistry
pathways that can optimally perform an array of elementary metabolic functions.
Despite the simplicity of the model employed, we find that the ensuing pathways
display a surprisingly rich set of properties, including the existence of
autocatalytic cycles and hierarchical modules, the appearance of universally
preferable metabolites and reactions, and a logarithmic trend of pathway length
as a function of input/output molecule size. Some of these properties can be
derived analytically, borrowing methods previously used in cryptography. In
addition, by mapping biochemical networks onto a simplified carbon atom
reaction backbone, we find that several of the properties predicted by the
artificial chemistry model hold for real metabolic networks. These findings
suggest that optimality principles and arithmetic simplicity might lie beneath
some aspects of biochemical complexity
Bilateral testicular self-castration due to cannabis abuse: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

The self-mutilating patient is an unusual psychiatric presentation in the emergency room. Nonetheless, serious underlying psychiatric pathology and drug abuse are important background risk factors. A careful stepwise approach in the emergency room is essential, although the prognosis, follow-up, and eventual rehabilitation can be problematic.

We present a unique and original case of bilateral self-castration caused by cannabis abuse.

Case Presentation

We report a case of a 40-year-old Berber man, who was presented to our emergency room with externalization of both testes using his long fingernails, associated with hemodynamic shock. After stabilization of his state, our patient was admitted to the operating room where hemostasis was achieved.

Conclusion

The clinical characteristics of self-mutilation are manifold and there is a lack of agreement about its etiology. The complex behavior associated with drug abuse may be one cause of self-mutilation. Dysfunction of the inhibitory brain circuitry caused by substance abuse could explain why this cannabis-addicted patient lost control and self-mutilated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report which presents an association between self-castration and cannabis abuse.</p
