IMPACTS OF PRICING POLICIES ON SELECTED FINANCIAL OUTCOMES OF THE CATTLEMEN'S TEXAS LONGHORN BEEF COOPERATIVE, INC.

The impacts of meat pricing on selected financial results for the CattlemenÂ’'s Texas Longhorn Beef Cooperative, Inc. were investigated in a stochastic simulation model. Triangular price distributions for boxed beef and various carcasses categories were specified for each month and correlated, based on 2000 USDA carlot meat report data. Hot-carcass weights were also modeled as triangular distributions. At 5,000 head and with meat prices 12% over USDA prices the probability of net profits before taxes (NPBT) falling below 0was1.30 was 1.3%. At 10,000 head and payments 9% over USDA prices there was an 11.8% chance of NPBT falling below 0.Demand and Price Analysis,

Screening and Brief Intervention for Alcohol Misuse in Older Adults: Training Outcomes Among Physicians and Other Healthcare Practitioners in Community-Based Settings

Screening and brief intervention (SBI) is increasingly available to older adults who engage in at-risk drinking. This study examined the extent to which SBI training influenced the willingness of healthcare providers in a community-based hospital and other clinical settings to promote the implementation of SBI. Ninety-three healthcare practitioners (primarily physicians, nurses, and social workers) who attended SBI training were asked about their intentions to apply the information in their professional practice, as well as their enthusiasm about recommending the training to others in their profession. Although there were no differences among the professions in terms of commitment to apply the information or level of comfort using the techniques, physicians were less interested in promoting SBI training among their colleagues. Although it may be more difficult to promote SBI in locations that don’t primarily provide mental health services, results suggest that primary care settings are precisely where training may be most useful

Backward error analysis for multisymplectic discretizations of Hamiltonian PDEs

Several recently developed multisymplectic schemes for Hamiltonian PDEs have been shown to preserve associated local conservation laws and constraints very well in long time numerical simulations. Backward error analysis for PDEs, or the method of modified equations, is a useful technique for studying the qualitative behavior of a discretization and provides insight into the preservation properties of the scheme. In this paper we initiate a backward error analysis for PDE discretizations, in particular of multisymplectic box schemes for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that the associated modified differential equations are also multisymplectic and derive the modified conservation laws which are satisfied to higher order by the numerical solution. Higher order preservation of the modified local conservation laws is verified numerically.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted Math. and Comp. Simul., May 200

Development of an integrated set of research facilities for the support of research flight test

    Get PDF
The Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility (DFRF) serves as the site for high-risk flight research on many one-of-a-kind test vehicles like the X-29A advanced technology demonstrator, F-16 advanced fighter technology integration (AFTI), AFTI F-111 mission adaptive wing, and F-18 high-alpha research vehicle (HARV). Ames-Dryden is on a section of the historic Muroc Range. The facility is oriented toward the testing of high-performance aircraft, as shown by its part in the development of the X-series aircraft. Given the cost of research flight tests and the complexity of today's systems-driven aircraft, an integrated set of ground support experimental facilities is a necessity. In support of the research flight test of highly advanced test beds, the DFRF is developing a network of facilities to expedite the acquisition and distribution of flight research data to the researcher. The network consists of an array of experimental ground-based facilities and systems as nodes and the necessary telecommunications paths to pass research data and information between these facilities. This paper presents the status of the current network, an overview of current developments, and a prospectus on future major enhancements

Caregiver Education and Service Utilization in African American Families Dealing with Dementia

    Get PDF
For more than a decade attention has been focused on Alzheimer’s family caregivers in African American communities. The Fourth Report of the Advisory Panel on Alzheimer’s Disease to the U. S. Congress and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services calls for “…public education and outreach efforts specifically targeted to ethnic elders and their families and communities through the development and dissemination of culturally relevant materials emphasizing both the established facts about [Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders] and the efficacy of seeking treatment.” (Advisory Panel on Alzheimer’s Disease, 1993, p. 50). While federal financing and state initiatives have addressed some of the inequities, minority family caregivers remain underserved

The Effects of Selected Personal and Professional Factors on Nurses\u27 Perceptions of Self-health

The purpose of this study was to determine the affects of selected personal and professional factors on nurses\u27 perceptions of self-health as evaluated by responses to a questionnaire designed for this study. A modification of the Health Belief Model, titled the Health Perception Model, served as the conceptual model for the study. The sample consisted of 121 registered nurses employed at a 515-bed hospital in a rural Midwestern state. A descriptive correlational design was used. The study posed thirteen null hypotheses predicting the influence of the variables (concern about health matters in general, subjective estimate of susceptibility to illness, age, presence of diagnosed illness, presence of symptoms, positive health activities, social factors, shift rotation, job satisfaction, type of nursing care unit, length of experience on specific unit, length of nursing experience, and professional commitment) on nurses\u27 perceptions of self-health. The statistical test was the analysis of variance. The null hypotheses regarding subjective estimate of susceptibility to illness, presence of symptoms, presence of disease,, and positive health activities were rejected at the .05 level of significance
