Structural/thermal considerations for design of large space platform structures
A method is described for placing a large, STS-compatible platform on orbit utilizing a construction method employing both deployable and erectable structures. A multifunctional mechanism is used for deployable structures and an on-orbit assembly is used for erectable structures. Also analyses are discussed which assess the thermal distortion of a simple open truss and a more complex truss
Lightweight Vacuum Jacket for Cryogenic Insulation - Appendices to Final Report
The feasibility is demonstrated of producing a lightweight vacuum jacket using state-of-the-art technology and materials. Design and analytical studies were made on an orbital maneuvering system fuel tank. Preliminary design details were completed for the tank assembly which included an optimized vacuum jacket and multilayered insulation system. A half-scale LH2 test model was designed and fabricated and a force/stiffness proof test was conducted on the vacuum jacket. A vacuum leak rate of 0.00001 was measured, approximately 1500 hours of vacuum pressure was sustained, and 29 vacuum pressure cycles were experienced prior to failure. For vol. 1, see N75-26192
Simplified thermal estimation techniques for large space structures
A tool for making rapid estimates of the response of space structures to thermal environments encountered in earth orbits is provided for the designer of these structures. Charts giving heating rates and temperatures for certain typical large spacecraft structural elements are provided. Background information for spacecraft thermal design considerations is presented. Environments, requirements, thermal control techniques, design guidelines, and approaches available for more detailed thermal response analysis are discussed
Probability of Causation for Lung Cancer After Exposure to Radon Progeny: A Comparison of Models and Data
The estimates of lung cancer risk due to the exposure to radon decay products are based on different data sets from underground mining and on different mathematical models that are used to fit the data. Diagrams of the excess relative rate per 100 working level months in its dependence on age at exposure and age attained are shown to be a useful tool to elucidate the influence that is due to the choice of the model, and to assess the differences between the data from the major western cohorts and those from the Czech uranium miners. It is seen that the influence of the choice of the model is minor compared to the difference between the data sets. The results are used to derive attributable lifetime risks and probabilities of causation for lung cancer following radon progeny exposures
Optical loss and lasing characteristics of high-quality-factor AlGaAs microdisk resonators with embedded quantum dots
Optical characterization of AlGaAs microdisk resonant cavities with a quantum
dot active region is presented. Direct passive measurement of the optical loss
within AlGaAs microdisk resonant structures embedded with InAs/InGaAs
dots-in-a-well (DWELL) is performed using an optical-fiber-based probing
technique at a wavelength (lambda~1400 nm) that is red-detuned from the dot
emission wavelength (lambda~1200 nm). Measurements in the 1400 nm wavelength
band on microdisks of diameter D = 4.5 microns show that these structures
support modes with cold-cavity quality factors as high as 360,000.
DWELL-containing microdisks are then studied through optical pumping at room
temperature. Pulsed lasing at lambda ~ 1200 nm is seen for cavities containing
a single layer of InAs dots, with threshold values of ~ 17 microWatts,
approaching the estimated material transparency level. Room-temperature
continuous wave operation is also observed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A new paradigm evaluating cost per cure of HCV infection in the UK
Background: New interferon (IFN)-free treatments for hepatitis C are more effective, safer but more expensive than current IFN-based therapies. Comparative data of these, versus current first generation protease inhibitors (PI) with regard to costs and treatment outcomes are needed. We investigated the real-world effectiveness, safety and cost per cure of 1st generation PI-based therapies in the UK. Methods: Medical records review of patients within the HCV Research UK database. Patients had received treatment with telaprevir or boceprevir and pegylated interferon and ribavirin (PR). Data on treatment outcome, healthcare utilisation and adverse events (AEs) requiring intervention were collected and analysed overall and by subgroups. Costs of visits, tests, therapies, adverse events and hospitalisations were estimated at the patient level. Total cost per cure was calculated as total median cost divided by SVR rate. Results: 154 patients from 35 centres were analysed. Overall median total cost per cure was £44,852 (subgroup range,: £35,492 to £107,288). Total treatment costs were accounted for by PI: 68.3 %, PR: 26.3 %, AE management: 5.4 %. Overall SVR was 62.3 % (range 25 % to 86.2 %). 36 % of patients experienced treatment-related AEs requiring intervention, 10 % required treatment-related hospitalisation. Conclusions: This is the first UK multicentre study of outcomes and costs of PI-based HCV treatments in clinical practice. There was substantial variation in total cost per cure among patient subgroups and high rates of treatment-related discontinuations, AEs and hospitalisations. Real world safety, effectiveness and total cost per cure for the new IFN free combinations should be compared against this baseline
NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Paper 21: Technological innovation and technical communications: Their place in aerospace engineering curricula. A survey of European, Japanese, and US Aerospace Engineers and Scientists
Aerospace engineers and scientists from Western Europe, Japan, and the United States were surveyed as part of the NASA/DoD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Questionnaires were used to solicit their opinions regarding the following: (1) the importance of technical communications to their profession; (2) the use and production of technical communications; and (3) their views about the appropriate content of an undergraduate course in technical communications. The ability to communicate technical information effectively was very important to the aerospace engineers and scientists who participated in the study. A considerable portion of their working week is devoted to using and producing technical information. The types of technical communications used and produced varied within and among the three groups. The type of technical communication product used and produced appears to be related to respondents' professional duties. Respondents from the three groups made similar recommendations regarding the principles, mechanics, and on-the-job communications to be included in an undergraduate technical communications course for aerospace majors
