Many-Body Corrections to Charged-Current Neutrino Absorption Rates in Nuclear Matter
Including nucleon--nucleon correlations due to both Fermi statistics and
nuclear forces, we have developed a general formalism for calculating the
charged--current neutrino--nucleon absorption rates in nuclear matter. We find
that at one half nuclear density many--body effects alone suppress the rates by
a factor of two and that the suppression factors increase to 5 at
g cm. The associated increase in the neutrino--matter
mean--free--paths parallels that found for neutral--current interactions and
opens up interesting possibilities in the context of the delayed supernova

Phosphorus indexing for cropland: Overview and basic concepts of the Iowa phosphorus index
Excessive phosphorus (P) loss from soils impairs surface water resources. An assessment tool or index has been proposed to identify fields with high potential risk of P delivery. The P index integrates P source and transport factors into a decision making process that may lead to changes in current P management and soil conservation practices. The index recognizes that a single soil P threshold alone is not an appropriate evaluation factor because of the varying conditions across fields. Although most indices being developed in the United States include similar factors, source and transport characteristics are considered in various ways to best address the variable conditions across regions. The Iowa P index reflects conditions that predominate under grain-crop production systems, considers source factors in a multiplicative manner within three main transport mechanisms, and approximates loads of P likely to enter and become available to aquatic ecosystems. An erosional component considers sheet and rill erosion, P enrichment, total soil P, buffers, sediment delivery, distance to a stream, and the long term biotic availability of particulate P in lake ecosystems. A runoff component considers water runoff based on a modification of the runoff curve number (RCN), soil-test P (STP), rate, time, and method of P application. An internal drainage component considers the presence of tiles, water flow to tile lines, subsurface recharge from subsurface flow, and soil-test P. When the erosion risk is high, the index weighs particulate P loss heavily compared with dissolved P loss, and emphasizes long-term processes comparatively more than short-term processes. This P assessment tool helps identify alternative P and soil conservation management options for reducing total P delivery from fields to surface water resources

Angelo Scarlatoâs extraordinary and vast collection of art and artifacts related to the Civil War, and specifically to the Battle of Gettysburg, the United States Colored Troops, slavery and the African American struggle for emancipation, citizenship and freedom has proved to be an extraordinary resource for Gettysburg College students. The 2012-14 exhibition in Musselman Libraryâs Special Collections, curated by Lauren Roedner â13, entitled Slaves, Soldiers, Citizens: African American Artifacts of the Civil War Era and its corresponding catalogue provided a powerful and comprehensive historical narrative of the period.

A Self-Consistent Approach to Neutral-Current Processes in Supernova Cores
The problem of neutral-current processes (neutrino scattering, pair emission,
pair absorption, axion emission, \etc) in a nuclear medium can be separated
into an expression representing the phase space of the weakly interacting
probe, and a set of dynamic structure functions of the medium. For a
non-relativistic medium we reduce the description to two structure functions
S_A(\o) and S_V(\o) of the energy transfer, representing the axial-vector
and vector interactions. is well determined by the single-nucleon
approximation while may be dominated by multiply interacting nucleons.
Unless the shape of S_A(\o) changes dramatically at high densities,
scattering processes always dominate over pair processes for neutrino transport
or the emission of right-handed states. Because the emission of right-handed
neutrinos and axions is controlled by the same medium response functions, a
consistent constraint on their properties from consideration of supernova
cooling should use the same structure functions for both neutrino transport and

Basic properties of nonsmooth Hormander's vector fields and Poincare's inequality
We consider a family of vector fields defined in some bounded domain of R^p,
and we assume that they satisfy Hormander's rank condition of some step r, and
that their coefficients have r-1 continuous derivatives. We extend to this
nonsmooth context some results which are well-known for smooth Hormander's
vector fields, namely: some basic properties of the distance induced by the
vector fields, the doubling condition, Chow's connectivity theorem, and, under
the stronger assumption that the coefficients belong to C^{r-1,1}, Poincare's
inequality. By known results, these facts also imply a Sobolev embedding. All
these tools allow to draw some consequences about second order differential

Physics of -Meson Condensation and High Temperature Cuprate Superconductors
The idea of condensation of the Goldstone -meson field in nuclear matter
had been put forward a long time ago. However, it was established that the
normal nuclear density is too low, it is not sufficient to condensate
-mesons. This is why the -condensation has never been observed.
Recent experimental and theoretical studies of high temperature cuprate
superconductors have revealed condensation of Goldstone magnons, the effect
fully analogous to the -condensation. The magnon condensation has been
observed. It is clear now that quantum fluctuations play a crucial role in the
condensation, in particular they drive a quantum phase transition that destroys
the condensate at some density of fermions
Spin susceptibility of neutron matter at zero temperature
The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the
spin susceptibility and the compressibility of neutron matter at zero
temperature. Results are given for realistic interactions which include both a
two-body potential of the Argonne type and the Urbana IX three-body potential.
Simulations have been carried out for about 60 neutrons. We find an overall
reduction of the spin susceptibilty by about a factor 3 with respect to the
Pauli susceptibility for a wide range of densities. Results for the
compressibility of neutron matter are also presented and compared with other
available estimates obtained for semirealistic nucleon-nucleon interactions by
using other techniques
Inverse Design of Three-Dimensional Nanoantennas for Metasurface Applications
Recent advances in manufacturing techniques have been made to match the demand for high performance optical devices. To this end, tremendous research activity has been focused on optical metasurfaces as they offer a unique potential to achieve disruptive designs when paired with innovative fabrication techniques and inverse design tools. However, most metasurface designs have revolved around canonical geometries. While these elements are relatively easy to fabricate, they represent only a small portion of the design space, and rarely offer peak performance in transmission, phase range or field of view. In this work, a Lazy Ant Colony Optimization (LACO) technique is applied in conjunction with a full-wave solver using the Periodic Finite Element Boundary Integral (PFEBI) method to reveal high performing three-dimensional nanoantenna designs with potential applications for a variety of optical devices
Assessing the UK policies for broadband adoption
Broadband technology has been introduced to the business community and the public as a rapid way of exploiting the Internet. The benefits of its use (fast reliable connections, and always on) have been widely realised and broadband diffusion is one of the items at the top of the agenda for technology related polices of governments worldwide. In this paper an examination of the impact of the UK governmentâs polices upon broadband adoption is undertaken. Based on institutional theory a consideration of the manipulation of supply push and demand pull forces in the diffusion of broadband is offered. Using primary and secondary data sources, an analysis of the specific institutional actions related to IT diffusion as pursued by the UK government in the case of broadband is provided. Bringing the time dimension into consideration it is revealed that the UK government has shifted its attention from supply push-only strategies to more interventional ones where the demand pull forces are also mobilised. It is believed that this research will assist in the extraction of the âsuccess factorsâ in government intervention that support the diffusion of technology with a view to render favourable results if applied to other national settings
