    Proposal for a Topological Plasmon Spin Rectifier

    We propose a device in which the spin-polarized AC plasmon mode in the surface state of a topological insulator nanostructure induces a static spin accumulation in a resonant, normal metal structure coupled to it. Using a finite-difference time-domain model, we simulate this spin-pump mechanism with drift, diffusion, relaxation, and precession in a magnetic field. This optically-driven system can serve as a DC "spin battery" for spintronic devices.Comment: Eq. 1 corrected; Figs 3 and 4 update

    The Impact of Financialization on Management and Employment Outcomes

    This paper examines three questions: 1) How and why have financial models of doing business emerged in the last three decades? 2) What new forms of financial capitalism have become important in the current period? 3) How do new financial intermediaries, such as private equity, and the financial strategies of nonfinancial corporations affect the management of companies and employment outcomes? The paper describes how deregulation and institutional change created the conditions for a new, more powerful role for finance capital in the governance of U.S. companies, and it synthesizes the empirical evidence on the process and outcomes of financialization in large publicly traded corporations, as well as those taken over by private equity. Areas for future research are identified to examine how financialization affects management and employment relations in the postcrisis period

    Tunneling ``zero-bias'' anomaly in the quasi-ballistic regime

    For the first time, we study the tunneling density of states (DOS) of the interacting electron gas beyond the diffusive limit. A strong correction to the DOS persists even at electron energies exceeding the inverse transport relaxation time, which could not be expected from the well-known Altshuler-Aronov-Lee (AAL) theory. This correction originates from the interference between the electron waves scattered by an impurity and by the Friedel oscillation this impurity creates.     US-guided laser treatment of parathyroid adenomas

    Objective: To determine the clinical efficacy of laser ablation for the tredatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Materials and methods: Twelve patients with pHPT were treated with laser ablation. Energy was administered by means of 1.5 m optical fibers percutaneously placed into the target via 21 G needles. A laser ablation unit (EchoLaser X4, Esaote) applied 3 W power for 400\u2013600 s/fiber/insertion to a total 3600\u20139000 Joules of energy. Patient serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels were checked at baseline and thereafter every 6 months. Patients were followed-up for 2 years with serologic and contrast-enhanced ultrasound. Therapeutic success was defined as normal PTH and calcium levels together with disappearance of nodule-related symptoms. Results: All procedures were performed in single session. Immediately following ablation, contrast enhanced ultrasound confirmed that all but one target had become avascular (technical success rate 11/12; 92%), remaining avascular at all follow-up ultrasound examinations, thereafter. The mean volume of parathyroid nodules decreased from 0.54 cc to 0.36 cc (72.0%). Serum PTH and calcium levels were significantly lower at 1, 12 and 24 m compared to baseline (p < 0.01). By 6 m, PTH and calcium returned to normal and were stable until 24 m in all successfully treated patients. All cases of hyperparathyroid-related symptoms resolved by 6 m (ostealgia [n = 5], repeated renal colic [n = 5], vomiting [n = 3]). Only one patient (8%) reported transient dysphonia as a minor complication. Conclusion: Laser ablation of enlarged, symptomatic parathyroid glands is safe and well-tolerated and can produce long-term, sustained reduction of serum PTH and calcium levels

    Suppression of Kondo effect in a quantum dot by external irradiation

    We demonstrate that the external irradiation brings decoherence in the spin states of the quantum dot. This effect cuts off the Kondo anomaly in conductance even at zero temperature. We evaluate the dependence of the DC conductance in the Kondo regime on the power of irradiation, this dependence being determined by the decoherence.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Self-Injurious Behaviors in Prisons: A Nationwide Survey of Correctional Mental Health Directors

    Self-injurious behavior (SIB) by inmates has serious health, safety, operational, security and fiscal consequences. Serious incidents require a freeze in normal facility operations. Injuries that need outside medical attention create additional security risks, including potential escape attempts. The interruption of normal operations, diversion of staff, cost of outside care, and drain on medical and mental health resources all have significant fiscal consequences. This session will present the results and implications of a survey of the Mental Health Directors in all 51 state and federal prison systems on the extent of SIB by inmates, including incidence and prevalence, adverse consequences, and management. Thirty-nine of the state and federal correctional systems (77%) responded to the survey. Fewer than 2% of inmates per year engage in SIB, but in 29 85%) of systems these events occur at least weekly to more than once per day. The highest rates of occurrence of these behaviors are in maximum security and lock-down units, and most often involve inmates with Axis II disorders. Despite the seriousness of the problem, systems typically collect little, if any, data on self-injurious behaviors, and management approaches lack widespread consistency

    Toward a Jurisprudence of Psychiatric Evidence: Examining the Challenges of Reasoning from Group Data in Psychiatry to Individual Decisions in the Law

    Psychiatry is an applied science. It thus shares a characteristic of all applied science in that it is ultimately applied at two levels—general and specific. Scientific research inevitably focuses on aggregate data and seeks to generalize findings across persons, places, or things. However, in the courtroom, as is true in other applied settings, the focus is usually on an individual case. Thus, psychiatry presents the challenge inherent in all scientific evidence of reasoning from group data to an individual case, which is termed the “G2i problem.” Psychiatry, unlike many scientific fields that come to court, also confronts the G2i problem in its daily practice since mental health professionals routinely diagnose and treat individuals based on aggregate data. Yet approaches to the G2i problem in clinical psychiatry do not necessarily comport with the ways in which aggregate data is applied to an individual case in the courtroom. In this Article, we employ the G2i lens to examine the admissibility of psychiatric expert testimony in regards to both general research findings, or “framework evidence,” and application of those general findings to specific cases, or “diagnostic evidence.” Although the rules of evidence that apply to “G” and to “i” are the same, the scientific and professional considerations with which each must be evaluated are fundamentally different. G2i inferences provide a useful lens by which the interactions of psychiatry and law can be better understood and managed
