STM Studies of Synthetic Peptide Monolayers

We have used scanning probe microscopy to investigate self-assembled monolayers of chemically synthesized peptides. We find that the peptides form a dense uniform monolayer, above which is found a sparse additional layer. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, submolecular resolution can be obtained, revealing the alpha helices which constitute the peptide. The nature of the images is not significantly affected by the incorporation of redox cofactors (hemes) in the peptides.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (4 gifs); to appear in the Proceedings of the XIIth Int. Age-Size Structure of Red Grouper, (Epinephelus morlo), from the Eastern Gulf of Mexico

Sagittal otoliths from 534 red grouper, Eplnephelus morlo, were collected from recreational and commercial fisheries of the eastern Gulf of Mexico in 1979-1981 (236 fish) and 1991-1992 (298 fish). Age estimations for the two collections were made In 1991-1992 from the surface and transverse sections of these otoliths. Also, estimates of back-calculated size at age (using the final annulus present at time of capture following Lea\u27s (1910) method were made for these collections. Red grouper were larger in size at capture at age and back-calculated size at age in 1991-1992 than in 1979-1981. The respective von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: 1979·81 L∞ = 78.9, K = 0.1778, t0 = 0.82591991·92 L∞ = 92.6, K = 0.1588, t0 = 0.9323 where L∞ Is mean maximum attainable total length In centimeters, K Is growth coefficient, and t0 Is hypothetical age in years at which fish would have zero length

Destructive Hostility: The Jeffrey Dahmer Case: A Psychiatric and Forensic Study of a Serial Killer

    Get PDF
We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer\u27s behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and his possible cannibalism and necrophilia

    Holonomy on D-Branes

This paper shows how to construct anomaly free world sheet actions in string theory with DD-branes. Our method is to use Deligne cohomology and bundle gerbe theory to define geometric objects which are naturally associated to DD-branes and connections on them. The holonomy of these connections can be used to cancel global anomalies in the world sheet action.Comment: Corrections made and some typographical errors remove

Modeling Seven Years of Event Horizon Telescope Observations with Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flow Models

An initial three-station version of the Event Horizon Telescope, a millimeter-wavelength very-long baseline interferometer, has observed Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) repeatedly from 2007 to 2013, resulting in the measurement of a variety of interferometric quantities. Of particular importance, there is now a large set of closure phases, measured over a number of independent observing epochs. We analyze these observations within the context of a realization of semi-analytic radiatively inefficient disk models, implicated by the low luminosity of Sgr A*. We find a broad consistency among the various observing epochs and between different interferometric data types, with the latter providing significant support for this class of models of Sgr A*. The new data significantly tighten existing constraints on the spin magnitude and its orientation within this model context, finding a spin magnitude of a=0.100.100.10+0.30+0.56a=0.10^{+0.30+0.56}_{-0.10-0.10}, an inclination with respect to the line of sight of θ=60813+5+10\theta={60^\circ}^{+5^\circ+10^\circ}_{-8^\circ-13^\circ}, and a position angle of ξ=1561727+10+14\xi={156^\circ}^{+10^\circ+14^\circ}_{-17^\circ-27^\circ} east of north. These are in good agreement with previous analyses. Notably, the previous 180180^\circ degeneracy in the position angle has now been conclusively broken by the inclusion of the closure phase measurements. A reflection degeneracy in the inclination remains, permitting two localizations of the spin vector orientation, one of which is in agreement with the orbital angular momentum of the infrared gas cloud G2 and the clockwise disk of young stars. This possibly supports a relationship between Sgr A*'s accretion flow and these larger-scale features.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted to Ap

    Asymmetric three-beam binary optic grating

    Get PDF
Binary and diffractive optical components are finding many applications in optical systems and integrated optical devices. A recent application required the development of a two-dimensional diffraction grating to perform an asymmetric, three-beam fanout. In this paper, techniques are presented for the design of arbitrary fanout grating devices. Modeling and optimization processes are demonstrated for the three-beam grating. The counter-intuitive results of the initial design are discussed, and experimental data verifying performance are presented

Optical Properties of the Kara Sea

This study was motivated by the need to understand dispersion processes which affect the redistribution of nuclear wastes in the Arctic from dump sites in the Kara Sea and in the rivers which flow into the Kara Sea. We focus on vertical profiles of light beam transmission and fluorometry made over the delta region fronting the Ob and Yenisey Rivers and over the East Novaya Zemlya Trough (ENZT). The delta region fronting the Ob River Estuary contains a large repository of particles in a dense bottom nepheloid layer with a maximum centered similar to 100 km in front of the estuary entrance and covering an area of roughly 200 km diameter. This suspended particle mass repository appears to contain both sediments and detritus and lends credence to the Lisitsyn [1995] concept of the marginal filter zone. In the deep water of the ENZT we found a strong increase of beam attenuation with depth, indicating a relatively large increase of particle mass concentration from similar to 50 m to the bottom (depths in excess of 300 m). The strongest concentration was adjacent to the southeast coast of Novaya Zemlya. We suggest that a type of hyperpycnical flow occurs from accumulation of sediments in the bottom waters of Novaya Zemlya fjords which then cascades down the steep slopes adjacent to the island, producing the particle mass distribution as observed by the transmissometer. The accumulation of these repositories of high particle mass concentrations in suspension would suggest that the residence time is high but that storm-driven events could act to disperse the material

    IR Kuiper Belt Constraints

We compute the temperature and IR signal of particles of radius aa and albedo α\alpha at heliocentric distance RR, taking into account the emissivity effect, and give an interpolating formula for the result. We compare with analyses of COBE DIRBE data by others (including recent detection of the cosmic IR background) for various values of heliocentric distance, RR, particle radius, aa, and particle albedo, α\alpha. We then apply these results to a recently-developed picture of the Kuiper belt as a two-sector disk with a nearby, low-density sector (40<R<50-90 AU) and a more distant sector with a higher density. We consider the case in which passage through a molecular cloud essentially cleans the Solar System of dust. We apply a simple model of dust production by comet collisions and removal by the Poynting-Robertson effect to find limits on total and dust masses in the near and far sectors as a function of time since such a passage. Finally we compare Kuiper belt IR spectra for various parameter values.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, uses aasms4.sty, 11 PostScript figures not embedded.
