    Latest results and prospects of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope

(Dogus Author) -- Yıldız, Süleyman Cenk (Dogus Author)The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment searches for axions from the Sun converted into few keV photons via the inverse Primakoff effect in the high magnetic field of a superconducting Large Hadron Collider (LHC) decommissioned test magnet. After results obtained with vacuum in the magnet pipes (phase I of the experiment) as well as with 4He the collaboration is now immersed in the data taking with 3He, to be finished in 2011. The status of the experiment will be presented, including a preliminary exclusion plot of the first 3He data. CAST is currently sensitive to realistic QCD axion models at the sub-eV scale, and with axion-photon couplings down to the ∼ 2 × 10-10 GeV -1, compatible with solar life limits. Future plans include revisiting vaccuum and 4He configurations with improved sensitivity, as well as possible additional search for non-standard signals from chamaleons, paraphotons or other WISPs. For the longer term, we study the feasibility of an altogether improved version of the axion helioscope concept, with a jump in sensitivity of about one order of magnitude in gaγ beyond CAST

    Normalization of the covariant three-body bound state vertex function

    The normalization condition for the relativistic three nucleon Bethe-Salpeter and Gross bound state vertex functions is derived, for the first time, directly from the three body wave equations. It is also shown that the relativistic normalization condition for the two body Gross bound state vertex function is identical to the requirement that the bound state charge be conserved, proving that charge is automatically conserved by this equation.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, published version, minor typos correcte

    Quark-Antiquark Bound States in the Relativistic Spectator Formalism

    The quark-antiquark bound states are discussed using the relativistic spectator (Gross) equations. A relativistic covariant framework for analyzing confined bound states is developed. The relativistic linear potential developed in an earlier work is proven to give vanishing meson\to q+qˉq+\bar{q} decay amplitudes, as required by confinement. The regularization of the singularities in the linear potential that are associated with nonzero energy transfers (i.e. q2=0,qμ0q^2=0,q^{\mu}\neq0) is improved. Quark mass functions that build chiral symmetry into the theory and explain the connection between the current quark and constituent quark masses are introduced. The formalism is applied to the description of pions and kaons with reasonable results.Comment: 31 pages, 16 figure

    We propose a new Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) based mesh compression framework. The 3D mesh is first transformed to 2D images on a regular grid structure. Then, this image-like representation is wavelet transformed and SPIHT is applied on the wavelet domain data. The method is progressive because the resolution of the reconstructed mesh can be changed by varying the length of the ID data stream created by SPIHT algorithm. Nearly perfect reconstruction is possible if full length of 1D data is received

    Connectivity-guided adaptive lifting transform for image like compression of meshes

    We propose a new connectivity-guided adaptive wavelet transform based mesh compression framework. The 3D mesh is first transformed to 2D images on a regular grid structure by performing orthogonal projections onto the image plane. Then, this image-like representation is wavelet transformed using a lifting structure employing an adaptive predictor that takes advantage of the connectivity information of mesh vertices. Then the wavelet domain data is encoded using "Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees" (SPIHT) method or JPEG2000. The SPIHT approach is progressive because the resolution of the reconstructed mesh can be changed by varying the length of the 1D data stream created by the algorithm. In JPEG2000 based approach, quantization of the coefficients determines the quality of the reconstruction. The results of the SPIHT based algorithm is observed to be superior to JPEG200 based mesh coder and MPEG-3DGC in rate-distortion

The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first results on the 4He data taking as well as the system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the experiment for the 3He data taking. Expected sensitivities on the coupling constant of axions to photons will be given for the recent 3He run just started in March 2008

    Lossless image compression by LMS adaptive filter banks

    A lossless image compression algorithm based on adaptive subband decomposition is proposed. The subband decomposition is achieved by a two-channel LMS adaptive filter bank. The resulting coefficients are lossy coded first, and then the residual error between the lossy and error-free coefficients is compressed. The locations and the magnitudes of the nonzero coefficients are encoded separately by an hierarchical enumerative coding method. The locations of the nonzero coefficients in children bands are predicted from those in the parent band. The proposed compression algorithm, on the average, provides higher compression ratios than the state-of-the-art methods

The analysis of data taken so far has shown no signal above the background, thus implying an upper limit to the axion-photon coupling of ga < 0.85 × 10-10GeV -1 at 95% CL for ma < 0.02 eV/c2. Ongoing measurements, with the magnet bores filled with a buffer gas (3He), are improving the sensitivity of the experiment for higher axion masses towards 1 eV/c2. Recent results, new ideas for Axion-Like Particle (WISPs) searches with CAST in the near future and the prospects of a new generation Helioscope are presented here
