REVOLUTION, AT THE END OF THE 18th CENTURY. REREADING A KEY-CONCEPT OF THE « SIÈCLE DES LUMIÈRES » Front the analysis of a large and varied corpus of texts (pamphlets, historiographical, autobiographical and literary texts, fiction etc.), this study brings out the three lines along which the concept of Revolution evolved in the 18th century. First, the use of the word in the plural - in the sense of the « vicissitudes of government » - came to be replaced by its use in the singular, which, after the « Revolution of America », came to mean total upheaval, not only political, but also social, moral and cultural. Secondly, from the 1770' s on, the concept was actualized and more and more often referred to political and social events taking place in France. Lastly, the term took on a predictive value, not only in prophecies but also in a new form of the philosophy of history (in the works of Raynal and Mably for example). It fullfilled the desire and the expectation of a Revolution which contemporaries saw come true after the Bastille was taken in 1789.RÉVOLUTION À LA FIN DU 18e SIÈCLE. POUR UNE RELECTURE DU CONCEPT-CLÉ DU SIÈCLE DE LUMIÈRES A partir de l'analyse d'un corpus très large et diversifié (pamphlets, textes historiographiques, mémoires, textes littéraires, etc.), cette étude dégage une triple évolution du concept de révolution au 18e siècle : une singularisation d'abord qui substitue l'emploi au pluriel du terme (dans le sens « péripétie des gouvernements ») par son singulier qui prend, depuis la « Révolution de l'Amérique », le sens d'un bouleversement non seulement politique, mais également social, moral et culturel ; une actualisation, ensuite, du concept qui est, à partir des années 1770, appliqué de plus en plus fréquemment pour décrire des événements se déroulant en France même ; et, enfin, une projection vers l'avenir comblant, à travers des prophéties, mais aussi au moyen d'une nouvelle forme de philosophie de l'histoire (par exemple chez Mably et Raynal), le désir et l'attente d'une Révolution que les contemporains peuvent effectivement voir se réaliser à partir de la prise de la Bastille en 1789.Lüsebrink Hans-Jürgen, Reichardt Rolf. Two main aspects of echoes of 1789 in Germany are here analysed. Firstly we discuss how information concerning the revolutionary events in France reached the other side of the Rhine, mainly through the press ; a few representative examples of newspaper reports are studied.
