Understanding empathy in design education

This paper presents the preliminary results of our research. The goal was to explore the role of empathy in design education and its importance in developing socially driven design projects that can evolve into social innovation. We used a qualitative interviewing approach with undergraduate design students in their fourth year to explore empathic experiences in both, their classroom, and their real-world design assignments. We could then observe that empathy has a better chance to be developed in an empathic environment. In other words, those students whose teachers had an empathic approach were often motivated and open to become empathetic with socially-driven design projects. In this document, we also present different perspectives to understand the concept of empathy, as an innate ability, as an ongoing process, and as a multiphase practice for social interactions, just to mention a few. With our research, we expect to show that developing empathic designers is fundamental for the design practice and eventually, for social innovation.

Análisis de la gestión de relaciones públicas en el proceso de prácticas profesionales en 2013. Caso: Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, México.

La Coordinación de Prácticas Profesionales de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación, está interesada en conocer la gestión de los procesos de comunicación institucional realizados en el año de 2013 y ejecutados a través de los canales formales de comunicación, teniendo como objetivo vincular a los alumnos y las empresas de los sectores productivo, social, gubernamental y educativo, por medio de trámites y documentos institucionales, la relación empresa-escuela, brindándoles a los practicantes, la oportunidad de experimentar el ejercicio profesional antes de terminar sus estudios

En la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León se estableció formalmente el programa de Prácticas Profesionales para los alumnos que deseen realizarlas y contar con xperiencia profesional al egresar de la carrera. Esta función ha permitido crear los enlaces con los diferentes sectores de la sociedad nuevoleonesa y establecer conductos formales de comunicación. Para ello, se desea realizar una evaluación de los procesos de comunicación institucional que como objetivo general determine la situación de los procesos comunicativos, y como objetivos específicos que mida: la eficiencia de los procesos y flujos de comunicación institucional, conocer cuál es el tipo de sector que tiene mayor incidencia en la ocupación de nuestros practicantes y la acentuación más solicitada, la distribución y ubicación geográfica de las empresas y los alumnos contratados; los rangos de apoyo económico ofertados a los practicantes y los niveles de semestres cursados por los alumnos al iniciar sus prácticas profesionales, además de conocer la opinión ( de los practicantes en esta experiencia y a los empleadores. La primera fase inicia con la recolección y revisión de datos cualitativos en documentos (físicos y electrónicos), Focus Group, y la técnica FO.DA. La segunda, aplicación de la encuesta en ambos públicos. El enfoque de la investigación es cualitativo/cuantitativo. Con alcance descriptivo y diseño metodológico de caso intrínseco. Length-weight relationship and relative condition factor of the Stone Scorpionfish Scorpaena mystes in the central area of the Gulf of California, Mexico

Background. In recent years (since 2012) there has been an increase in the commercial exploitation of Scorpaena mystes Jordan & Starks, 1985 in the central area of the Gulf of California and there is no information on the basic biology of this species that serve as a basis to determine the current population status and, in the future, assess any changes associated with exploitation and environmental factors. Goals. Determine the length-weight (LWR) and length-length (LLR) relationships, and the relative condition factor of S. mystes. Methods. Fish specimens (n = 258) were collected monthly from May 2015 through April 2016 in waters off Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur. Each fish was measured for standard length (SL) and total length (TL), and weighed (W). Results. LWR and LLR were highly significant (p <0.05) with a determination coefficient higher than 0.9. The b-value (b = 3.06) of LWR was not significantly-different from 3. Monthly variation in the relative condition factor was also significant (p <0.05) with the highest value in August (1.34). Conclusions. The growth of S. mystes is isometric. The monthly variation in the condition factor may be associated with maturation of the gonads of the species.Background. New bathymetric record for the fish bighead mora, Laemonema verecundum (Gadiformes: Moridae) in the Gulf of California, Mexico

Background. The presence of Laemonema verecundum (Jordan & Cramer, 1897) had not been previously reported at depths less than 666 m. Goals. The objective of the research was to study the bathymetric distribution of L. verecundum. Methods. In the eastern continental shelf of the Gulf of California, 648 specimens of L. verecundum were collected during two experimental research cruises in September 2004 and February 2005. Results. Specimens were collected at depths between 165 and 483 m, where temperatures ranged between 9.5 and 19.9° C, and average oxygen concentration was 1.7 mg/l. Conclusions. This new record expands the known bathymetric distribution range of this species inhabiting shallow waters in the gulf.Background.
