The Importance of the Participatory Dimension in Urban Resilience Improvement Processes

    Get PDF
This article discusses the approach adopted by the researchers into citizen participation in urban regeneration actions and projects. It describes the concepts of sustainability and habitability in relation to the urban environment and architecture within the framework of improving the resilience of our cities through the circular economy and decarbonisation processes in architecture. The authors review the participatory dimension of different urban regeneration actions carried out in Spain and the impact of this dimension on the results obtained by environmental, economic and social urban improvements. They then define possible strategies and methodological tools for integrating this dimension into traditional urban regeneration processes. The article presents case studies and their specific characteristics, and draws conclusions about their effectiveness and relevance. It also compares citizen-led interventions with interventions led by public administrations. Lastly, the authors analyse the potential reasons for success in these processes and projects, identifying weaknesses and proposing possible strategies for future development by researchers

Aspects of sustainability in new urban developments: case study of Santa Barbara, Seville

The reality of our cities poses new challenges. The proliferation of the sprawling city as a higher standard model is provoking non-sustainable situations in a large number of cities worldwide. The alternative compact city model resulting from the traditional European city provides sustainably advantageous aspects in relation to the spread model, but a specific study is required to determine what aspects of sustainability are applicable to new urban developments in our cities. For this purpose, the case study of the development of Santa Barbara in Seville will be examined, a paradigmatic project for its great size and environmental approach. Covering an overall surface of 3.751.260 m2, 25% of the area remains as green space, with a built surface of 2.246.180 m2, 81% of which is devoted to housing and 19% to business. The topics that have been developed are structured in three large groups: matter, energy and information flows. They have been developed at different scales following a study of accessibility and alternative mobility. The urban space has been shaped according to the interpretation of the green space as a primary consideration, and to the built space as secondary. The project has been developed from the large scale main through routes to small scale pedestrian mobility and access to private and semi-public spaces. Aspects related to energy saving and bioclimatic architecture in buildings have also been developed. The aim of this study is to take a step forward in urban planning, taking us closer and closer towards the paradigm of sustainability and enabling us to adopt it as a new model for society. Keywords: environmental architecture, bioclimatic architecture, environmental urban planning, sustainable urban planning, sustainable city

    Energy and materials in architecture

Nowadays it is well know that urban systems require a huge material and energy input for its function. Previous studies have noticed that most of this energy demand is produced by construction. This ambit absorbs the energy consumed by electricity and gas, but also the energy embodied in the construction materials, which it is defined by the origin of the resources utilized, its posterior industrial manipulation and transport. The role of architecture inside energy balance and masses fluxes inside the urban system has an important relevance. In order to this, architects require new design and construction strategies that allow a better use of materials and efficiency on the energy use of our buildings. This article has the objective of expose the energetic weight of design decisions, looking for an adequate habitability of spaces and also at the technology applications and selection of construction materials. Our principal intention is to approximate life cycle of materials as an architectonic design regulator

    Get PDF
Para el caso de estudio dicha una potencia de refrigeración de 40 Tn.The objective of this work is to analyze the architectural evolution and the environmental response of tall buildings constructed in Mendoza by studying how norms have influenced their morphology. A programme based on solar radiation on tilt surfaces methodology (Duffie and Beckman, 1991) was applied. This has served to know incident solar radiation on each façade with different orientation. Taking into the amount of glazed envelope, solar radiation that reaches the interiors of the buildings was calculated as well as its impact on refrigeration systems. Results show that buildings with glazed envelope that also do not use architectural resourses of solar protection, need a bigger refrigeration energy than constructions with more opaque envelopes. In the case studied, the refrigeration potency results in 40Tons.

This essay presents the didactic experience developed during an International Degree course which is aimed to a group of students of architecture, university tutors and professionals linked to State Institutions. They receive training for environmentally friendly architectural interventions in their own context, ranging from protected natural areas to developed urban enclaves. The critical environmental situation in Chiapas, Mexico, by the constant damage of protected natural spaces caused mainly by the inadequate environmental and cultural development of the indigenous communities, requires a firm response on architectural and engineer solutions according to the natural context. The objective of the course is aimed not only in the transmission of information and technology, but also to start a frame of local cooperation which allows professionals to further develop with their knowledge and to take action in response to the existing problems. This Course allowed an interdisciplinary work between architects, engineers, biologists, and anthropologists to develop methodologies which allow a gradual approach to environmental architecture.Asociación Argentina de Energías Renovables y Medio Ambiente (ASADES
