The improvement of Internet technology has motivated distributed work groups to collaborate without meeting face to face. Although asynchronous meetings through Web-based group communications systems enable groups dispersed temporarily and geographically to collaborate more flexibly, parallel and non-linear communication among dispersed members also challenge effective and efficient group coordination. Moreover, the Web-based asynchronous meeting is distinguished not only from the face-to-face meeting but also from the synchronous computer-supported meeting in terms of coordination process. However, previous asynchronous group communications or virtual team research focused more on the comparison of this new type of meeting with the face-to-face meeting. Not many research efforts have been exerted to improve the productivity of this new form of meeting and find ways to overcome its disadvantages. Facilitation was proved effective to enhance the productivity of synchronous meetings. However the effect of structured discussion through facilitation was not clear in asynchronous meeting settings even though facilitation is a common practice in asynchronous group communication systems. This study examined the effect of a facilitated structure in improving the productivity of asynchronous decision-making groups. Delphi was chosen as the facilitated structure because it has been widely used as the paper-and-pencil-based structure to facilitate dispersed experts in collecting their opinions. In this study a computer-based Delphi structure was implemented through asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication. A 2X2 controlled experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Delphi structure on the effectiveness of small-sized (5-6 members) and medium-sized (10-12 members) asynchronous computer-supported groups. The formal facilitation using Delphi structure was effective to improve the productivity of asynchronous groups in generating more ideas. On the contrary, informal leadership by group coordinators seems to have played a more important role in producing better reports. In terms of per person ideas, small-sized groups were more productive, even though medium-sized groups produced more total ideas than small-sized groups. The superiority of Delphi groups and small-sized groups is related to their higher equality of participation. This result suggests that in asynchronous meetings, equal participation of group members in discussion is important in improving idea generation productivity while in synchronous meetings, the process loss of production blocking plays a crucial role

The purpose of this study was to simultaneously examine relationships between teacher quality and instructional time and mathematics and science achievement of 8th grade cohorts in 18 advanced and developing economies. In addition, the study examined changes in mathematics and science performance across the two groups of economies over time using data from the TIMSS 1995-2007 assessments. While economy did not account for variation in mathematics and science achievement, findings from regression analyses indicated significant relationships between school inputs and achievement in both groups of countries across the years. Teaching experience was a strong indicator of mathematics performance in developing countries, while instructional time was mildly related to achievement in both subjects in advanced economies.

Thesis(Master) -- KDI School: Master of Development Policy, 2022The Seoul Metropolitan Government has been promoting a Management-Type Residential Environment Improvement Project that comprehensively improves the residential environment of low-rise residential areas through collaborative governance supporting community activation. However, a recent shift in the urban regeneration paradigm in Seoul has raised questions about collaborative governance as a tool for resident participatory planning in urban planning and management. This study focuses on the collaborative governance supporting community activation in the management-type residential environment improvement project through the example of Gomdallaekkum Maeul in Sinwol 1-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. Especially, Gomdallaekkum Maeul’s community organization shows evidence of establishing a virtuous cycle of public-private partnerships and collaboration between local networks in the COVID-19 pandemic period where community activities are restricted. Therefore, based on the case of reinforcement and extension of collaborative governance following the interaction of the unique community activation of Gomdallaekkum Maeul, a new perspective on the management-type residential environment improvement project is presented.1. The nature of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of interactive animation. An animated, interactive program which shows various activities and programs of the Rochester Institute of Technology, (R.I.T.), is the finished product. R.I.T\u27s history, upstate New York location, and academic philosophies are incorporated. The interactive disk contains information about the various programs the college offers, as well as, many examples of actual student work. It also shows these students creating their projects. In their own words, they tell about their lives at R.I.T., both in and out of the classroom. Faculty and staff also offer their views, lending another perspective of R.I.T\u27s philosophies and beliefs. Because R.I.T. offers a various array of programs, highlighted are only some of the programs available at R.I.T. The shown in detail are the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. Cooperative experiences offered at R.I.T. , and the financial aid available to students are also described. The video images include interviews and discussions with many of the departmental leaders of the campus, as well as, interviews with students of different cultures, backgrounds, and programs. This interactive program was created by using numerous computer software packages which is the actual heart of the thesis. The program has been built around Macromind Director, VideoFusion, Specular Logo Motion and Morph and Adobe Premiere. Any retouching has been completed by using the Photoshop program. The combining of all these programs results in the end product : an interactive disk

One-pot Enzymatic Synthesis of Deoxy-thymidine-diphosphate (TDP)-2-deoxy-∝-d-glucose Using Phosphomannomutase

Production of deoxy-thymidine-diphosphate (TDP)-sugars as substrates of glycosyltransferases, has been one of main hurdles for combinatorial antibiotic biosynthesis, which combines sugar moiety with aglycon of various antibiotics. Here, we report the one-pot enzymatic synthesis of TDP-2-deoxy-glucose employing high efficient TMP kinase (TMK; E.C. 2.7.2.12), acetate kinase (ACK; E.C. 2.7.1.21), and TDP-glucose synthase (TGS; E.C. 2.7.7.24) with phosphomannomutase (PMM; E.C. 5.4.2.8). In this study, replacing phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E.C. 5.4.2) by PMM from Escherichia coli gave four times higher specific activity on 2-deoxy-6-phosphate glucose, suggesting that the activity on 2-deoxy-glucose-6-phosphate was mainly affected by PMM activity, not PGM activity. Using an in vitro system starting from TMP and 2-deoxy-glucose-6-phosphate glucose, TDP-2-deoxy-glucose (63% yield) was successfully synthesized. Considering low productivity of NDP-sugars from cheap starting materials, this paper showed how production of NDP-sugars could be enhanced by controlling mutase activity
