A numerically efficient output-only system-identification framework for stochastically forced self-sustained oscillators

Self-sustained oscillations are ubiquitous in nature and engineering. In this paper, we propose a novel output-only system-identification framework for identifying the system parameters of a self-sustained oscillator affected by Gaussian white noise. A Langevin model that characterizes the self-sustained oscillator is postulated, and the corresponding Fokker--Planck equation is derived from stochastic averaging. From the drift and diffusion terms of the Fokker--Planck equation, unknown parameters of the system are identified. We develop a numerically efficient algorithm for enhancing the accuracy of parameter identification. In particular, a modified Levenberg--Marquardt optimization algorithm tailored to output-only system identification is introduced. The proposed framework is demonstrated on both numerical and experimental oscillators with varying system parameters that develop into self-sustained oscillations. The results show that the computational cost required for performing the system identification is dramatically reduced by using the proposed framework. Also, system parameters that were difficult to be extracted with the existing method could be efficiently computed with the system identification method developed in this study. Pertaining to the robustness and computational efficiency of the presented framework, this study can contribute to an accurate and fast diagnosis of dynamical systems under stochastic forcing.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

125 GeV Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson in supersymmetry with vector-like matters

We propose a possibility of the 125 GeV Higgs being a pseudo-Goldstone boson in supersymmetry with extra vector-like fermions. Higgs mass is obtained from loops of top quark and vector-like fermions from the global symmetry breaking scale f at around TeV. The mu, Bmu/mu \sim f are generated from the dynamics of global symmetry breaking and the Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at f as tan beta \simeq 1. The relation of msoft \sim 4πMZ4\pi M_Z with f \sim mu \sim m_soft \sim TeV is obtained and large mu does not cause a fine tuning for the electroweak symmetry breaking. The Higgs to di-photon rate can be enhanced from the loop of uncolored vector-like matters. The stability problem of Higgs potential with vector-like fermions can be nicely cured by the UV completion with the Goldstone picture.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figure

A numerical study of scale effects on performance of a tractor type podded propeller

ABSTRACTIn this study, the scale effect on the performance of the podded propeller of tractor type is investigated. Turbulent flow computations are carried out for Reynolds numbers increasing progressively from model scale to full scale using the CFD analysis. The result of the flow calculation for model scale Reynolds numbers agrees well with that of the experiment of a large cavitation tunnel. The existing numerical analysis indicates that the performance of the podded propeller blades is mainly influenced by the advance coefficient and relatively little by the Reynolds number. However, the drag of pod housing with propeller in operation is different from that of pod housing without propeller due to the acceleration and swirl of propeller slipstream which is altered by propeller loading as well as the pressure recovery and friction according to Reynolds number, which suggests that the pod housing drag under the condition of propeller in operation is the key factor of the scale effect on the performance between model and full scale podded propellers. The so called ‘drag ratio’, which is the ratio of pod housing drag to total thrust of podded propeller, increases as the advance coefficient increases due to accelerated flow in the slipstream of the podded propeller. However, the increasing rate of the drag ratio reduces continuously as the Reynolds number increases from model to full scale progressively. The contribution of hydrodynamic forces, which acts on the parts composed of the pod housing with propeller operating in various loading conditions, to the thrust and the torque of the total propeller unit are presented for a range of Reynolds numbers from model to full scales

Using Social Media to Enhance Customer Service and Improve Responsiveness: The Case of Indian Railways’ Citizen Engagement Mechanism

    Get PDF
As one of the largest railway systems in the world, Indian Railways (IR) has had to accommodate a wide variety of customer service demands from its 23 million annual users. In 2014, the railway launched an effort to improve passenger services using a social media–based citizen engagement system through which passengers and IR staff could communicate. The system did not itself revolutionize customer service, but by using this social media communication platform in conjunction with hands-on learning, IR made a number of strides forward. Through a multistage implementation process, IR improved the social media platform’s manual, haphazard work processes and automated them. As a result of trial and error and continuous adaptation, the new customer relations management system improved internal operations and accountability and enhanced public trust in the railway

Development of a hybrid magnetic resonance/computed tomography-compatible phantom for magnetic resonance guided radiotherapy

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to develop a hybrid magnetic resonance/computed tomography (MR/CT)-compatible phantom and tissue-equivalent materials for each MR and CT image. Therefore, the essential requirements necessary for the development of a hybrid MR/CT-compatible phantom were determined and the development process is described. A total of 12 different tissue-equivalent materials for each MR and CT image were developed from chemical components. The uniformity of each sample was calculated. The developed phantom was designed to use 14 plugs that contained various tissue-equivalent materials. Measurement using the developed phantom was performed using a 3.0-T scanner with 32 channels and a Somatom Sensation 64. The maximum percentage difference of the signal intensity (SI) value on MR images after adding K2CO3 was 3.31%. Additionally, the uniformity of each tissue was evaluated by calculating the percent image uniformity (%PIU) of the MR image, which was 82.18 ±1.87% with 83% acceptance, and the average circular-shaped regions of interest (ROIs) on CT images for all samples were within ±5 Hounsfield units (HU). Also, dosimetric evaluation was performed. The percentage differences of each tissue-equivalent sample for average dose ranged from -0.76 to 0.21%. A hybrid MR/CT-compatible phantom for MR and CT was investigated as the first trial in this field of radiation oncology and medical physics

Gene expression profiling of human myeloid leukemic MV4-11 cells treated with 5-Aza-2’-deoxycytidine

The pyrimidine analog, 5-aza-2’-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) is a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor that triggers DNA demethylation leading to the reactivation of epigenetically silenced tumor suppressor genes. To understand the shift in gene expression which mediates the beneficial 5-aza-dC effects in leukemia, we have treated human myeloid derived leukemic cells with 5-aza-dC. Target genes were identified first in MV4-11 cells using a genome-wide gene expression profiling assay to detect differences in treated and untreated cells. From this analysis six genes were identified (HOXA4, HOXD4, HOXA8, HOXD12, CD9 and RGS2) as being significantly different expressed after treatment. To validate microarray data, we performed quantitative PCR on these genes from multiple leukemic cells. The results suggest that these genes are epigenetically regulated indicating that dysregulation of HOXA4, HOXD4, HOXA8, HOXD12, CD9 and RGS2 expression may play an important role in establishing the malignant phenotype in AML
