    Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma: a case report

    Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma is a rare benign soft tissue tumor, almost always arising from inguinal lymph nodes. It usually presents as a painless, slow-growing inguinal mass. We report herein a case of an intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma occurring in a 36-year-old man. The salient clinicopathologic features of this unusual tumor are presented and the literature is briefly reviewed

    Unilateral simultaneous renal oncocytoma and angiomyolipoma: case report

    A rare case of synchronous angiomyolipoma and oncocytoma in the same kidney of a 70 year old man is presented. A left renal mass was found incidentally by ultrasound. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1,3 cm mass in the mid-portion of the left kidney, whereas on the lower pole of the same kidney, a 3,3 cm mass was also revealed, consistent with angiomyolipoma. A working diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma was made. A radical nephrectomy was performed. Microscopically, the tumor of the lower pole was found to be an angiomyolipoma, whereas the mid-portion tumor was an oncocytoma. Until now, only 16 cases of unilateral simultaneous presence of renal angiomyolipoma and oncocytoma have been reported. Of these cases, all except one were female and three were associated with the tuberous sclerosis complex. It is well worth remarking, that renal oncocytoma overlap with other renal neoplasms, therefore nephrectomy remains the treatment of choice

    A rare coexistence of adrenal cavernous hemangioma with extramedullar hemopoietic tissue: a case report and brief review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare, benign, non-functioning neoplastic tumors. To our knowledge, 55 cases have been reported in the literature to date.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the first case of a large, non-functioning adrenal cavernous hemangioma that was incidentally found during the preoperative staging workup of a 75 year old woman with left breast adenocarcinoma. Imaging with US, CT scan and MRI showed a heterogeneous 8 cm mass with non-specific radiological features that was located on the left adrenal gland. The mass was surgically excised and pathology revealed an adrenal hemangioma with areas of extramedullar hemopoiesis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although adrenal hemangiomas are rare and their preoperative diagnosis is difficult, they should always be included in the differential diagnosis of adrenal neoplasms.</p

    Challenges in measuring indicators of progress for the Atlantic Action Plan

    The EU Atlantic Action Plan (AAP) has recently been updated and revised to support ‘blue growth’ along Europe’s western coastal regions. The revisions reflect recent challenges facing the Atlantic Arc maritime economies including the Covid-19 crisis, Brexit and the new requirements of the European Green Deal. This new revision, termed AAP 2.0, also addresses some of the weaknesses highlighted in the original Atlantic Action Plan particularly regarding identifying indicators that may be used to measure progress in the achievement of the Plan’s objectives. Using a database with comparable marine socio-economic data across the Atlantic regions, a number of indicators are identified that may be used to monitor progress of the AAP 2.0. Recent trends and spatial distributions across the Atlantic Arc region are shown for these indicators. The challenges in measuring progress are also highlighted, including where some AAP objectives and associated indicators may conflict with other EU policy aims and where the current monitoring framework can be bolstered with the inclusion of new indicators

    Toward Sustainable Environmental Quality : Priority Research Questions for Asia

    Environmental and human health challenges are pronounced in Asia, an exceptionally diverse and complex region where influences of global megatrends are extensive and numerous stresses to environmental quality exist. Identifying priorities necessary to engage grand challenges can be facilitated through horizon scanning exercises, and to this end we identified and examined 23 priority research questions needed to advance toward more sustainable environmental quality in Asia, as part of the Global Horizon Scanning Project. Advances in environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, biological monitoring, and risk-assessment methodologies are necessary to address the adverse impacts of environmental stressors on ecosystem services and biodiversity, with Asia being home to numerous biodiversity hotspots. Intersections of the food–energy–water nexus are profound in Asia; innovative and aggressive technologies are necessary to provide clean water, ensure food safety, and stimulate energy efficiency, while improving ecological integrity and addressing legacy and emerging threats to public health and the environment, particularly with increased aquaculture production. Asia is the largest chemical-producing continent globally. Accordingly, sustainable and green chemistry and engineering present decided opportunities to stimulate innovation and realize a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Engaging the priority research questions identified herein will require transdisciplinary coordination through existing and nontraditional partnerships within and among countries and sectors.     DNA-coated gold nanoparticles for sensing and drug delivery

    In recent years inorganic nanoparticles have been of great scientific interest not only due to the fact that they can be tailored in morphology allowing for the tuning of their optical and electronic properties but also due to their rich surface chemistry. Recent advances in conjugation techniques have allowed for the surface functionalization of nanoparticles with ligands such as synthetic oligonucleotides. This has led to the development of bio-nanomaterials that have been successfully used in applications ranging from bio sensing to the targeted delivery of molecules such as drugs.This thesis focuses on the design and synthesis of advanced DNA-coated gold nanostructures that can perform the synergistic tasks of sensing and drug delivery in cells.Gold nanoparticles functionalized with synthetic oligonucleotides were assembled into dimers using copper free click chemistry and were used for the intracellular detection of up to two mRNA targets. Once taken up by cells they showed great biocompatibility, no significant susceptibility to degradation by nucleases and most importantly excellent specificity towards the mRNA sequence they were designed to detect.Furthermore, DNA-coated gold nanoparticle dimers were developed into multifunctional nanostructures. In addition to live cell mRNA detection we showed how they could also be designed to deliver up to two chemotherapeutic drugs. By relying on the specificity of the gold nanoparticle dimer towards an mRNA target, cell specific drug delivery was made possible thus demonstrating the synergistic capabilities of this system.Finally with a view of shedding light on the interaction between DNA-coated gold nanoparticles and cells their intracellular fate including the time point and location of mRNA detection after cellular entry was investigated.<br/
