Bewitching The Stage: Elizabethan And Jacobean Witch-Lore And Witch-Hunt
This project hypothesizes that the early modern stage witch\u27s grotesque femininity and her masculine presumption of agency were the effective signifiers of the feminine covert, what men fantasized about the reproductive secrets of womanhood and their control over the feminine activities. My investigation of late Elizabethan and Jacobean drama indicates that the fictional witch is postulated as the negative example of female fertility and feminine nurture: the witch not only interferes in the natural process of fertility in humans as well as in nature but she also contaminates maids and mistresses with her mismanagement and overconsumption of household resources. I suggest that the early modern stage appropriated the historical witch, the anti-mother, and cast her as the anti-housewife whose negative example was to discipline femininity and domesticate housewives.
In Titus Andronicus and Catering for Bloody Banquets: the Witch in the Kitchen, I postulate Tamora as anti-mother and Titus as anti-wife: while the queen of Goths defiles nature and nurture, Titus literalizes the fright in the feminine by cooking and serving a cannibalistic banquet. The text encodes the witch on Tamora\u27s eroticized maternal body and in Titus\u27 feminine labor and control in the kitchen. In Is There a Witch in this Text?: the Troubling Provenance of the Witch of Brainford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, I illustrate how the wives, using a local witch\u27s garb and cuckold\u27s horns, dissipate the male fantasies of witchery and cuckoldry while the numen of the fairy queen disciplines, remedies, and harmonizes the elements of communal dis-eases. Chapter Three, Imaging the Witch at the Table: the Abominable Belly of Middleton\u27s Women, examines the gustatory and sexual appetite of indolent housewives--daughters of the witch--who destroy the middle-class aspiration of the fair banqueting house. In The Covenant Staged: Jugglers, Conjurers, and Skeptics on the Early Modern Stage, I investigate the theater\u27s epistemological dilemma in appropriating the violent fantasies of the witch-hunt, detecting an interpretive agency in staging the witch
Technical efficiency of small-scale honey producers in Ethiopia: A stochastic frontier analysis
In this paper, a study is presented of the dynamic behavior of an automatic transmit power control (ATPC) loop in a single fixed wireless system (FWS) link subject to multipath fading and an uncorrelated co-channel interferer that does not use ATPC (this represents a so-called non-ATPC FWS link or a fixed satellite link). Fundamental questions include the sensitivity of an ATPC link to multipath interference and the co-channel interference that may be caused by a non-ATPC interferer. In the context of the present project, a good example of a non-ATPC interferer is a fixed satellite to which one antenna in a fixed microwave link has partial view. A computer model was developed that constitutes a useful tool in describing; simulating and analyzing an ATPC loop in a single FWS link. With the aid of this model, results are presented on the sensitivity of an ATPC loop in a FWS link with respect to channel conditions, non-ATPC interference and parameter settings
Characterization of cp3 reveals a new bri1 allele, bri1-120, and the importance of the LRR domain of BRI1 mediating BR signaling
Abstract
Background
Since the identification of BRI1 (BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE1), a brassinosteroids (BRs) receptor, most of the critical roles of BR in plant development have been assessed using various bri1 mutant alleles. The characterization of individual bri1 mutants has shown that both the extracellular and cytoplasmic domains of BRI1 are important to its proper functioning. Particularly, in the extracellular domain, regions near the 70-amino acid island are known to be critical to BR binding. In comparison, the exact function of the leucine rich-repeats (LRR) region located before the 70-amino acid island domain in the extracellular cellular portion of BRI1 has not yet been described, due to a lack of specific mutant alleles.
Results
Among the mutants showing altered growth patterns compared to wild type, we further characterized cp3, which displayed defective growth and reduced BR sensitivity. We sequenced the genomic DNA spanning BRI1 in the cp3 and found that cp3 has a point mutation in the region encoding the 13th LRR of BRI1, resulting in a change from serine to phenylalanine (S399F). We renamed it bri1-120. We also showed that overexpression of the wild type BRI1 protein rescued the phenotype of bri1-120. Using a GFP-tagged bri1-120 construct, we detected the bri1-120 protein in the plasma membrane, and showed that the phenotypic defects in the rosette leaves of bri1-301, a kinase-inactive weak allele of BRI1, can be restored by the overexpression of the bri1-120 proteins in bri1-301. We also produced bri1-301 mutants that were wild type in appearance by performing a genetic cross between bri1-301 and bri1-120 plants.
Conclusions
We identified a new bri1 allele, bri1-120, whose mutation site has not yet been found or characterized. Our results indicated that the extracellular LRR regions before the 70-amino acid island domain of BRI1 are important for the appropriate cellular functioning of BRI1. Also, we confirmed that a successful interallelic complementation occurs between the extracellular domain mutant allele and the cytoplasmic kinase-inactive mutant allele of BRI1 in vivo.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112486/1/12870_2010_Article_793.pd
The Diversity of Diffuse Ly Nebulae around Star-Forming Galaxies at High Redshift
We report the detection of diffuse Ly emission, or Ly halos
(LAHs), around star-forming galaxies at and in the NOAO
Deep Wide-Field Survey Bo\"otes field. Our samples consist of a total of
1400 galaxies, within two separate regions containing spectroscopically
confirmed galaxy overdensities. They provide a unique opportunity to
investigate how the LAH characteristics vary with host galaxy large-scale
environment and physical properties. We stack Ly images of different
samples defined by these properties and measure their median LAH sizes by
decomposing the stacked Ly radial profile into a compact galaxy-like
and an extended halo-like component. We find that the exponential scale-length
of LAHs depends on UV continuum and Ly luminosities, but not on
Ly equivalent widths or galaxy overdensity parameters. The full
samples, which are dominated by low UV-continuum luminosity Ly emitters
(), exhibit LAH sizes of 5kpc. However, the
most UV- or Ly-luminous galaxies have more extended halos with
scale-lengths of 7kpc. The stacked Ly radial profiles decline
more steeply than recent theoretical predictions that include the contributions
from gravitational cooling of infalling gas and from low-level star formation
in satellites. On the other hand, the LAH extent matches what one would expect
for photons produced in the galaxy and then resonantly scattered by gas in an
outflowing envelope. The observed trends of LAH sizes with host galaxy
properties suggest that the physical conditions of the circumgalactic medium
(covering fraction, HI column density, and outflow velocity) change with halo
mass and/or star-formation rates.Comment: published in ApJ, minor proof corrections applie
The Effect of Ca-P Coated Bovine Bone Mineral on Bone Regeneration around Dental Implant in Dogs
There are many obstacles to overcome in implant dentistry. The bony defect around implant can be seen in immediate installation procedures. Following tooth extraction, however, a socket often presents dimensions that may be considerably greater than the dimensions of a conventional implant
HCO + dissociation in a strong laser field: An ab initio classical trajectory study
a b s t r a c t We have investigated the photodissociation of HCO + in a strong field with a wavelength of 10 lm using ab initio molecular dynamics. Classical trajectories were calculated at three field intensities. At 2.9 Ă 10 14 W/cm 2 and phase / = 0, protons have two distinct dissociation times, mainly due to the reorientation of HCO + relative to the field direction prior to dissociation. The kinetic energy distribution at this intensity agrees with Wardlaw's wagging tail model, suggesting that dissociation occurs through barriersuppression. At 1.7 Ă 10 14 and 8.8 Ă 10 13 W/cm 2 , barrier suppression is incomplete and the maximum kinetic energy is less than predicted by the wagging tail model
Super-lattice, rhombus, square, and hexagonal standing waves in magnetically driven ferrofluid surface
Standing wave patterns that arise on the surface of ferrofluids by (single
frequency) parametric forcing with an ac magnetic field are investigated
experimentally. Depending on the frequency and amplitude of the forcing, the
system exhibits various patterns including a superlattice and subharmonic
rhombuses as well as conventional harmonic hexagons and subharmonic squares.
The superlattice arises in a bicritical situation where harmonic and
subharmonic modes collide. The rhombic pattern arises due to the non-monotonic
dispersion relation of a ferrofluid
The Large-scale and Small-scale Clustering of Lyman-Break Galaxies at 3.5 < z< 5.5 from the GOODS survey
We report on the angular correlation function of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs)
at z~4 and 5 from deep samples obtained from the Great Observatories Deep
Origins Survey (GOODS). Similar to LBGs at z~3, the shape of w(theta) of the
GOODS LBGs is well approximated by a power-law with slope beta~0.6 at angular
separation theta > 10 arcsec. The clustering strength of z~4, 5 LBGs also
depends on the rest-frame UV luminosity, with brighter galaxies more strongly
clustered than fainter ones, implying a general correlation between halos' mass
and LBGs' star-formation rate. At smaller separations, w(theta) of deep samples
significantly exceeds the extrapolation of the large-scale power-law fit,
implying enhanced spatial clustering at scales r < 1 Mpc. We also find that
bright LBGs statistically have more faint companions on scales theta < 20
arcsec than fainter ones, showing that the enhanced small-scale clustering is
very likely due to sub-structure, namely the fact that massive halos can host
multiple galaxies. A simple model for the halo occupation distribution and the
CDM halo mass function reproduce well the observed w(theta). The scaling
relationship of the clustering strength with volume density and with redshift
is quantitatively consistent with that of CDM halos. A comparison of the
clustering strength of three samples of equal luminosity limit at z ~ 3, 4 and
5 shows that the LBGs at z~5 are hosted in halos about one order of magnitude
less massive than those in the lower redshift bins, suggesting that
star-formation was more efficient at higher-redshift.Comment: replaced with the version accepted for publication in ApJ. 46 pages,

Bilateral Ageusia in a Patient with a Left Ventroposteromedial Thalamic Infarct: Cortical Localization of Taste Sensation by Statistical Parametric Mapping Analysis of PET Images
Unilateral taste loss is usually observed on the side contralateral to a thalamic infarction, despite gustatory function being represented bilaterally. We report a rare case of bilateral taste loss in a patient with an acute left unilateral thalamic infarction, with unilateral left insular hypometabolism demonstrated by statistical parametric map analysis of PET images. Our observations suggest that the left insular cortex and left ventroposteromedial thalamic nuclei are critical to bilateral gustatory sensation
