GRIDCC: Real-time workflow system
The Grid is a concept which allows the sharing of resources between distributed communities, allowing each to progress towards potentially different goals. As adoption of the Grid increases so are the activities that people wish to conduct through it. The GRIDCC project is a European Union funded project addressing the issues of integrating instruments into the Grid. This increases the requirement of workflows and Quality of Service upon these workflows as many of these instruments have real-time requirements. In this paper we present the workflow management service within the GRIDCC project which is tasked with optimising the workflows and ensuring that they meet the pre-defined QoS requirements specified upon them

Grid computing technologies for renewable electricity generator monitoring and control
In this paper we discuss the use of real-time Grid computing for the monitoring, control and simulation of renewable electricity generators and their associated electrical networks. We discuss briefly the architectural design of GRIDCC and how we have integrated a number of real (solar, CHP) and simulated conventional power generators into the GRIDCC environment. A local weather station has also been attached to an Instrument Manager to alert experts appropriately when the Solar Array is not generating. The customised remote control and monitoring environment (a virtual control room), distributed using a standard web server, is discussed
Performance of R-GMA for monitoring grid jobs for CMS data production
High energy physics experiments, such as the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, have large-scale data processing requirements, with data accumulating at a rate of 1 Gbyte/s. This load comfortably exceeds any previous processing requirements and we believe it may be most efficiently satisfied through grid computing. Furthermore the production of large quantities of Monte Carlo simulated data provides an ideal test bed for grid technologies and will drive their development. One important challenge when using the grid for data analysis is the ability to monitor transparently the large number of jobs that are being executed simultaneously at multiple remote sites. R-GMA is a monitoring and information management service for distributed resources based on the grid monitoring architecture of the Global Grid Forum. We have previously developed a system allowing us to test its performance under a heavy load while using few real grid resources. We present the latest results on this system running on the LCG 2 grid test bed using the LCG 2.6.0 middleware release. For a sustained load equivalent to 7 generations of 1000 simultaneous jobs, R-GMA was able to transfer all published messages and store them in a database for 98% of the individual jobs. The failures experienced were at the remote sites, rather than at the archiver's MON box as had been expected

Investigating an A-star algorithm-based fitness function for mobile robot evolution
One of the factors that affect the success of Evolutionary Robotics (ER) is the way fitness functions are designed to operate. While needs-based custom fitness functions have been developed, most of the time they have been defined in simpler mathematical functions to reduce the computation time. In this paper, we hypothesize that an incremental fitness function based on established techniques in specific task domains in robotics will aid the evolution process. An A-star algorithm-based fitness function for path planning is designed and implemented for evolving the body plans and controllers of robots for navigation and obstacle avoidance tasks. It has been shown that using this concept, fitter robots have evolved in most cases when compared to simple distance-only based fitness functions. However, due to variable performance of the evolver with the A-star fitness function, the results are inconclusive. We also identify problems associated with the fitness function and make recommendations for designing future fitness functions based on observations of the experiments
Report of the working group on the measurement of triple gauge boson couplings
The working group discussed several aspects of triple gauge coupling analysis viewed in the light of experiences with the first high energy data recorded at energies above the W pair threshold. Some analysis methods were reviewed briefly, and consideration given to better ways of characterising the data. The measurement of CP violating parameters was discussed. Results were prepared to further quantify the precision attainable on anaomalous couplings in the four-quark channel using jet-charge methods, and finally the trade off between maximum LEP energy-vs-luminosity was quantified.The working group discussed several aspects of triple gauge coupling analysis viewed in the light of experiences with the first high energy data recorded at energies above the W pair threshold. A survey on evolutionary-aided design in robotics
The evolutionary-aided design process is a method to find solutions to design and optimisation problems. Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are applied to search for optimal solutions from a solution space that evolves over several generations. EAs have found applications in many areas of robotics. This paper covers the efforts to determine body morphology of robots through evolution and body morphology with the controller of robots or similar creatures through co-evolution. The works are reviewed from the perspective of how different algorithms are applied and includes a brief explanation of how they are implemented
The design, construction and performance of the MICE scintillating fibre trackers

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 ElsevierCharged-particle tracking in the international Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) will be performed using two solenoidal spectrometers, each instrumented with a tracking detector based on diameter scintillating fibres. The design and construction of the trackers is described along with the quality-assurance procedures, photon-detection system, readout electronics, reconstruction and simulation software and the data-acquisition system. Experimental Status of Neutrino Physics
After a fascinating phase of discoveries, neutrino physics still has a few
mysteries such as the absolute mass scale, the mass hierarchy, the existence of
CP violation in the lepton sector and the existence of right-handed neutrinos.
It is also entering a phase of precision measurements. This is what motivates
the NUFACT 11 conference which prepares the future of long baseline neutrino
experiments. In this paper, we report the status of experimental neutrino
