    Instability in Rice Production in Gujarat: A Decomposition Analysis

    Rice is the most important and extensively grown food crop in India and is the staple food for more than half of the world population. In India, Gujarat ranks 15th in terms of area and production and 9th in productivity (2011). The scope for expanding rice production lies in enhancing productivity. The growth rates of rice area, production and productivity during 1982-83 to 2011-12 were 0.41, 1.25 and 0.83 percent per annum respectively. The growth estimate from last 30 years data shows that negligible increase was recorded in area and production of rice. Presently the yield level of rice in the state is comparatively low from national average need to be increased substantially. The magnitude of instability in area and production of rice has been higher in all the selected districts compared to state. Variability in production has been at a higher rate compared to area and productivity variability in this crop. The area-yield co-variance had a stabilizing effect on reduction of instability in rice production It can be inferred that the wide fluctuation in production of rice crop have been due to the high variability in its productivity. The future development programmes should envisage on increase of yield for bringing stabilization in production of the crop. The area instability also needs to be reduced. This could be reduced by more investment on research for rice production technology in the state

    A randomised, multi-centre, prospective, double blind pilot-study to evaluate safety and efficacy of the non-absorbable Optilene® Mesh Elastic versus the partly absorbable Ultrapro® Mesh for incisional hernia repair

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Randomised controlled trials with a long term follow-up (3 to 10 years) have demonstrated that mesh repair is superior to suture closure of incisional hernia with lower recurrence rates (5 to 20% versus 20 to 63%). Yet, the ideal size and material of the mesh are not defined. So far, there are few prospective studies that evaluate the influence of the mesh texture on patient's satisfaction, recurrence and complication rate. The aim of this study is to evaluate, if a non-absorbable mesh (Optilene<sup>® </sup>Mesh Elastic) will result in better health outcomes compared to a partly absorbable mesh (Ultrapro<sup>® </sup>Mesh).</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>In this prospective, randomised, double blind study, eighty patients with incisional hernia after a midline laparotomy will be included. Primary objective of this study is to investigate differences in the physical functioning score from the SF-36 questionnaire 21 days after mesh insertion. Secondary objectives include the evaluation of the patients' daily activity, pain, wound complication and other surgical complications (hematomas, seromas), and safety within six months after intervention.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study investigates mainly from the patient perspective differences between meshes for treatment of incisional hernias. Whether partly absorbable meshes improve quality of life better than non-absorbable meshes is unclear and therefore, this trial will generate further evidence for a better treatment of patients.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00646334</p

    Differential Cerebral Cortex Transcriptomes of Baboon Neonates Consuming Moderate and High Docosahexaenoic Acid Formulas

    BACKGROUND: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6) are the major long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) of the central nervous system (CNS). These nutrients are present in most infant formulas at modest levels, intended to support visual and neural development. There are no investigations in primates of the biological consequences of dietary DHA at levels above those present in formulas but within normal breastmilk levels. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Twelve baboons were divided into three formula groups: Control, with no DHA-ARA; “L”, LCPUFA, with 0.33%DHA-0.67%ARA; “L3”, LCPUFA, with 1.00%DHA-0.67%ARA. All the samples are from the precentral gyrus of cerebral cortex brain regions. At 12 weeks of age, changes in gene expression were detected in 1,108 of 54,000 probe sets (2.05%), with most showing <2-fold change. Gene ontology analysis assigns them to diverse biological functions, notably lipid metabolism and transport, G-protein and signal transduction, development, visual perception, cytoskeleton, peptidases, stress response, transcription regulation, and 400 transcripts having no defined function. PLA2G6, a phospholipase recently associated with infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy, was downregulated in both LCPUFA groups. ELOVL5, a PUFA elongase, was the only LCPUFA biosynthetic enzyme that was differentially expressed. Mitochondrial fatty acid carrier, CPT2, was among several genes associated with mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation to be downregulated by high DHA, while the mitochondrial proton carrier, UCP2, was upregulated. TIMM8A, also known as deafness/dystonia peptide 1, was among several differentially expressed neural development genes. LUM and TIMP3, associated with corneal structure and age-related macular degeneration, respectively, were among visual perception genes influenced by LCPUFA. TIA1, a silencer of COX2 gene translation, is upregulated by high DHA. Ingenuity pathway analysis identified a highly significant nervous system network, with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) as the outstanding interaction partner. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that LCPUFA concentrations within the normal range of human breastmilk induce global changes in gene expression across a wide array of processes, in addition to changes in visual and neural function normally associated with formula LCPUFA

    Export Performance of Fresh Mangoes from India

    The status of fresh mangoes in respect of its export from India was studied for the period from the year 2008-09 to 2019-20 concerning significant export destinations. Status was examined by estimating mean, compound growth rate (CGR), instability, and diversification. Ray method was used to estimate the instability and diversification status was examined with the help of the Simpson Index of Diversification. Compound Growth Rate (CGR) was estimated by employing the best fit, functional form to the export data. United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh Pr, United Kingdom, Nepal, and Saudi Arab were the major export destinations of fresh mangoes from India in terms of quantity and value during the study period. Average growth in this export sector was 0.97 and 1.79 percent w.r.t. quantity and value, respectively. High growth coupled with moderate instability was observed. A moderate level of instability was observed at an overall level. During the year 2008-09 to 2019-20, lots of variation was observed in the level of diversification

    Spreading of droplets under various gravitational accelerations

    We describe a setup to perform systematic studies on the spreading of droplets of complex fluids under microgravity conditions. Tweaking the gravitational acceleration under which droplets are deposited provides access to different regimes of the spreading dynamics, as quantified through the Bond number. In particular, microgravity allows us to form large droplets while remaining in the regime where surface tension effects and internal driving stresses are predominant over hydrostatic forces. The VIP-DROP2 (VIsco-plastic DROPlets on the drop tower) experimental module provides a versatile platform to study a wide range of complex fluids through the deposition of axisymmetric droplets. The module offers the possibility to deposit droplets on a precursor layer, which can be composed of the same or a different fluid. Furthermore, it allows us to deposit four droplets simultaneously while conducting shadowgraphy on all of them and observing either the flow field (through particle image velocimetry) or the stress distribution inside the droplet in the case of stress birefringent fluids. It was developed for a drop tower catapult system, is designed to withstand a vertical acceleration of up to 30 times the Earth's gravitational acceleration in the downward direction, and is capable of operating remotely under microgravity conditions. We provide a detailed description of the module and an exemplary data analysis for droplets spreading on-ground and in microgravity

    Surgical removal of duct occluder device under mild hypothermia without cardiopulmonary bypass

    Because the use of percutaneous intervention is increasing for the closure of the patent ductus arteriosus, the procedure related complications are also on rise, with migration of the device being most common. The routine practice is to remove the migrated duct occluder device under cardiopulmonary bypass. Amplatzer duct occluder used in a 4-month-old infant dislodged into the descending thoracic aorta. It was removed by the posterolateral thoracotomy under mild hypothermia through juxtaductal aortotomy between the aortic cross-clamps. The use of cardiopulmonary bypass is thus avoided.Prashant N.
