    Disentanglement of intrinsic and extrinsic side-jump scattering induced spin Hall effect in N-implanted Pt

    The rapidly evolving utilization of spin Hall effect (SHE) arising from spin-orbit coupling in 5d transition metals and alloys have made giant strides in the development of designing low-power, robust and non-volatile magnetic memory. Recent studies, on incorporating non-metallic lighter elements such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur into 5d transition metals, have shown an enhancement in damping-like torque efficiency {\theta}_DL due to the modified SHE, but the mechanism behind this enhancement is not clear. In this paper, we study {\theta}_DL at different temperatures (100-293 K) to disentangle the intrinsic and extrinsic side-jump scattering induced spin Hall effect in N-implanted Pt. We observe a crossover of intrinsic to extrinsic side-jump mechanism as the implantation dose increases from 2*10^16 ions/cm2 to 1*10^17 ions/cm2. A sudden decrease in the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity is counterbalanced by the increase in the side-jump induced SHE efficiency. These results conclude that studying {\theta}_DL as a function of implantation dose, and also as a function of temperature, is important to understand the physical mechanism contributing to SHE, which has so far been unexplored in incorporating non-metallic element in 5d transition metals

    Wetting state and mechanical property alteration for the Fe3Si films using rapid thermal annealing under various temperatures

    The current research demonstrates the modification of the wetting behavior and mechanical features as well as structure and morphology of Fe3Si films created via facing target sputtering by the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) with the set RTA temperatures (TRTA) of 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C. Following the RTA process, the crystallinity of Fe3Si developed under 400 °C or below. At the 600 °C and 800 °C TRTA, new crystal orientations emerged for FeSi and then β-FeSi2, respectively. Together with composition results, the Fe3Si films were proven to change into FeSi and then FeSi2 under a high TRTA regime. At temperatures of 600 °C and 800 °C, large crystallites, including the scraggly interface, were observed. The root-mean-square roughness roughened slightly according to the RTA process at TRTA of 600 °C or above. The hydrophobic properties of the Fe3Si film surfaces became hydrophilic after the RTA procedure at a TRTA value above 400 °C. The hardness value of the Fe3Si films evidently increased through RTA at 600 °C and 800 °C. Thus, above 400 °C, the RTA process significantly alters the physical features of as-created Fe3Si films

    The Protective Effect of Interleukin-11 on the Cell Death Induced by X-ray Irradiation in Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cell

    Interleukin-11/PI3K/X-ray Irradiation/Intestinal Epithelial Cell. Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is a well known anti-inflammatory cytokine that is associated with cell growth, and also participates in limiting X-ray irradiation induced intestinal mucosal injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of IL-11 on the cell injury induced by X-ray irradiation in rat intestinal epithelial IEC-18 cells. Recombinant human IL-11 (rhIL-11) treated cells were irradiated and then examined for cell viability. To evaluate irradiation injury, trypan blue staining was used to detect the dead cells. The viability of irradiated cells was up-regulated by rhIL-11 treatment and also resulted in the activation of p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (p90RSK) and S6 ribosomal protein (S6Rp). Wortmannin, a specific inhibitor of PI3K, suppressed the activation of S6Rp in rhIL-11 treated cells, and decreased the up-regulation of viability by rhIL-11 treatment in irradiated cells. The TUNEL assay was also perfomed to estimate the rate of apoptosis in X-ray induced cell death. There was no difference in the results between trypan blue staining and the TUNEL assay. Further, rhIL-11 down-regulated the expression of cleaved caspase-3 in irradiated cells. These results suggest that rhIL-11 may play an important role in protection from radiation injury

    Survival outcomes including salvage therapy of adult head and neck para-meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma: a multicenter retrospective study from Japan

    Abstract Background Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children, but rare in adults. Para-meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma in head and neck (PM-HNRMS) is less applicable for surgery due to the anatomic reason. PM-HNRMS has a poor prognosis in children. However, its clinical outcomes remain unclear in adults due to the rarity. Further, there is almost no detailed data about salvage therapy. Methods We retrospectively examined the adult patients with PM-HNRMS treated at institutions belonging to the Kyushu Medical Oncology Group from 2009 to 2022. We evaluated the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of the patients who received a first-line therapy. We also reviewed the clinical outcomes of patients who progressed against a first-line therapy and received salvage therapy. Results Total 11 patients of PM-HNRMS received a first-line therapy. The characteristics were as follows: median age: 38 years (range 25 – 63 years), histology (alveolar/spindle): 10/1, and risk group (intermediate/high): 7/4. As a first-line therapy, VAC and ARST0431-based regimen was performed in 10 and 1 patients, respectively. During a first-line therapy, definitive radiation for all lesions were performed in seven patients. The median PFS was 14.2 months (95%CI: 6.0 – 25.8 months): 17.1 months (95%CI: 6.0 – not reached (NR)) for patients with stage I-III and 8.5 months (95%CI: 5.2 – 25.8 months) for patients with stage IV. The 1-year and 3-year PFS rates were 54.5% and 11.3% for all patients. Median OS in all patients was 40.8 months (95%CI: 12.1 months–NR): 40.8 months (95%CI: 12.1 – NR) for patients with stage I-III and NR for patients with stage IV. The 5-year OS rate was 48.5% for all patients. Among seven patients who received salvage therapy, three are still alive, two of whom remain disease-free for over 4 years after completion of the last therapy. Those two patients received multi-modal therapy including local therapy for all detected lesions. Conclusion The cure rate of adult PM-HNRMS is low in spite of a first-line therapy in this study. Salvage therapy might prolong the survival in patients who received the multi-modal therapy including local therapy for all detected lesions
