A novel disk-type X-ray area imaging detector using radiophotoluminescence in silver-activated phosphate glass

    Get PDF
We report a novel two- and three-dimensional (2-D, 3-D) imaging detector based on the radiophotoluminescence (RPL) phenomenon in silver-activated phosphate glass (PG:Ag) and evaluate its dosimetric characteristics. A compact disk-type PG:Ag detector with a diameter of 80 mm was rotated at a rate of 400 rpm to read out the accumulated dose information and then remove the images for reuse. After X-ray exposure, three RPL dosimeter processes, i.e.; preheating, reading, and erasing, were carried out with only a UV laser at 375 nm by adjusting the stepwise output levels. The 3-D images and dose distributions were rapidly reconstructed with a high spatial resolution of 1 μm and a sensitivity of 1 mGy. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Assignments and optical properties of X-ray-induced colour centres in blue and orange radiophotoluminescent silver-activated glasses

金沢大学人間社会研究域人間科学系We have systematically investigated the origin and optical properties of the X-ray-induced colour centres based on the blue and red radiophotoluminescence (RPL) in a silver-activated phosphate glass. The induced-absorption band was decomposed into six Gaussian bands on the basis of its strong analogy with silver-activated sodium chloride. We have ascribed these bands to Ag0, Ag2, Ag2 and other silver ion species by means of optical and thermal measurements such as colour centre formation and dissolution by highly successive femtosecond-pulse irradiation, excited-state lifetime and thermal annealing characteristics. The data confirmed that the blue RPL at 450 nm could be attributed to the 270 and 345 nm bands due to the Ag2 and Ag0 centres, respectively, and that the orange RPL at 560 nm was associated with the 308 nm band due to the Ag2 centres. © 2010 Elsevier B.V

Observation and partly characterisation of silver nanoparticles in X-ray irradiated radiophotoluminescent phosphate glass

The direct observation and characterisation of silver nanoparticles or clusters embedded in a Ag+-activated phosphate glass was demonstrated. Correlations between the isolated Ag+ concentration and X-ray-induced silver species were systematically examined using optical measurements. Evidence of spherical silver nanoparticles or clusters with sizes ranging from 5 to 30 nm was obtained from the lattice spacings and from energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy. Three-dimensional contour plots using combined excitation-emission spectroscopy were also recorded to allow identification of the complicated spectroscopic features of the sample. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. A three-dimensional imaging detector based on nano-scale silver-related defects in X- and gamma-ray-irradiated glasses

Ag-activated phosphate glass, which is the most commonly known radiophotoluminescent (RPL) material, has the capability to operate not only dosimeters but also two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) dose imaging detectors in the same host. This passive detector is based on radiationinduced, optically active nano-scale defects. In this work, the transient-state optical properties of the blue and orange RPL were investigated using a time-resolved spectrum technique for 137Cs and 60Co gamma-ray-irradiated Ag-activated phosphate glass. Specifically, the blue RPL intensity with a decay time of 5 ns as a function of the depth at the vicinity of the surface was systematically examined to clarify an accurate dose distribution within the glass. Moreover, a feasibility study into the use of an RPL Ag-activated phosphate glass detector for fluorescent nuclear track imaging was demonstrated using a confocal fluorescence image microscope for the first time. © 2016 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Silver-activated radiophotoluminescent glass: band assignments and a novel readout system using a modulated UV laser diode

金沢大学人間社会研究域人間科学系We investigated the assignments and characteristics of the X-ray-induced colour centres in a silver-activated radiophotoluminescent glass. The induced-absorption spectrum was decomposed into six Gaussian bands, which were, in turn, attributed to the Ag+, Ag3+ or Ag32+, Ag2+, Ag2+, Ag0 and hole-trap centres, respectively, by means of optical and thermal measurements. All components of the blue and orange radiophotoluminescence (RPL) in a silver-activated phosphate glass were confirmed to be X-ray-induced colour centres. We also proposed and constructed a new readout system for the measurement of the RPL of the glass dosimeter that considers the characteristics of the radiation-induced bands
