Climate change impacts on coastal lakes: an evaluation of the impact on Vembanad, Chilka and Pulicat lakes and their resources
Bivalves play key role in ecosystem stabilisation
due to inherent filter feeding capability and clams
are important components of soft bottom benthic
communities. In the Tuticorin Bay, mass mortality
of fishes and shellfishes was observed in Februay
2008. The probable cause for the large scale mortality
has been indicated as increased levels of ammonia
(Asha et al., 2009). A rapid survey was conducted in
the bay to assess the impact on the bivalve fauna
Absorption cross section of RN and SdS extremal black hole
The nature of scalar wave functions near the horizon of Reissner Nordstrom
(RN) extremal and Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) extremal black holes are found
using WKB approximation and the effect of reflection of waves from the horizon.
The absorption cross section when RN extremal and SdS extremal
black holes placed in a Klein-Gordon field is calculated.Comment: 11 pages, Preprint to IJMP
Biology of squids
This section is. based on the data collected in the squid jigging
survey made by two vessels, M.F.V. Matsya Sugandhi and M.V. Blue
Fin on the southwest coast of India during the 9-month period from
June 19&& to February 19&9. The data were collected onboard by the
scientists of CMFRI who partici;>ated in the survey.
Three species of squids were jigged during the survey, and
to understand some aspects of the biology of each of these species
a general idea about their distribution and Telative abundance in space
and time is necessary. For this' purpose, a one-degree square where
jigging was done during the period is taken as a unit area
Fishery, biology and dynamics of dogtooth tuna, Gymnosarda unicolor (Rüppell, 1838) exploited from Indian seas
Dogtooth tuna, Gymnosarda unicolor (Rüppell, 1838)
(Fig. 1) is a pelagic tuna preferring waters of temperature
between 21 and 26 oC. It is one of the principal species
exploited by hook and line (recreational as well as
commercial fishery) operated in the oceanic region. Meat
of dogtooth tuna is white and so it has great demand and
fetch high price (IUCN, 2011). However, occasional
ciguatera fish poisoning in humans has been reported on
consumption of dogtooth tuna. It is exported in fresh and
frozen state and is used for the production of sashimi,
canned tuna, and pouch products. Most of the world
landings of dogtooth tuna during 1963 -2006 was from the
Indian Ocean. Small scale tuna long lines for the species
operating in the Indian Ocean belong to Taiwan, Srilanka,
Maldives, Japan or Pakista
EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF EPTACOG BETA (RECOMBINANT HUMAN FVIIA) ACCORDING TO AGE IN PERSONS WITH HAEMOPHILIA A/B WITH INHIBITORS UNDERGOING SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Introduction: Eptacog beta (CEVENFACTA®) is a new rFVIIa approved by the EMA for the treatment of bleeding events and prevention of bleeding during surgery in persons with haemophilia A/B with inhibitors (PwHABI) aged ≥12 years (y).
Methods: PERSEPT 3 was a Phase 3 (NCT02020369) trial of eptacog beta in PwHABI who required surgical procedures. Eptacog beta was administered at an initial dose of 200μg/kg or 75μg/kg for major or minor procedures respectively. This was followed by 75μg/kg for ≥5 (major procedures) or ≥2 (minor procedures) days. Haemostatic efficacy was assessed using a 4-point scale during the intra and postoperative care period (primary efficacy endpoint was determined by the investigator at the study centre 48±4h after the last dose of eptacog beta, based on the totality of the assessments performed on the patient (pt) at each timepoint). This post-hoc analysis compared the efficacy and safety of eptacog beta by age (pts aged 㰒 vs ≥12y).
Results: Twelve pts were included (㰒y: n=5, 1 major and 4 minor procedures; ≥12y: n=7, 5 major and 2 minor procedures). The primary endpoint success proportion was 100% (95% CI: 39.8-100) in pts aged 㰒y (4 successes, 1 missing) and 71.4% (95% CI: 29.0-96.3) in pts aged ≥12y (5 successes; 2 failures). The intraoperative success proportion was 100% (95% CI: 47.8-100) for pts aged 㰒y (5 successes) and 100% (95% CI: 59.0-100) for pts aged ≥12y (7 successes). The success proportion 24h post-procedure was 100% (95% CI: 47.8-100) for pts aged 㰒y (5 successes) and 100% (95% CI: 47.8-100) for pts aged ≥12y (5 successes; 2 missing). Two pts discontinued treatment (1 aged 㰒y withdrew consent; 1 aged ≥12y due to an adverse event (AE): postprocedural hematoma). One pt experienced 2 serious AEs leading to death, both were considered unrelated to the treatment. No allergic or thrombotic events occurred; no neutralising antibodies were detected. Antifibrinolytics were used concomitantly with eptacog beta in 4 patients without any safety concerns.
Discussion/Conclusion: This post-hoc subgroup analysis shows that eptacog beta is effective and well-tolerated in perioperative care irrespective of patient age (㰒 vs ≥12y), supporting the use of eptacog beta for bleed management (prevention and treatment) in major and minor surgical procedures in all PwHABI
Multisoliton solutions and integrability aspects of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations
Using Painleve singularity structure analysis, we show that coupled
higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger (CHNLS) equations admit Painleve property.
Using the results of Painleve analysis, we succeed in Hirota bilinearizing the
CHNLS equations, one soliton and two soliton solutions are explictly obtained.
Lax pairs are explictly constructed.Comment: Eight pages and six figures. Physical Review E (to be appear
Massive Charged Scalar Quasinormal Modes of Reissner-N"ordstrom Black Hole Surrounded by Quintessence
We evaluate the complex frequencies of the normal modes for the massive
charged scalar field perturbations around a Reissner-N"ordstrom black hole
surrounded by a static and spherically symmetric quintessence using third order
WKB approximation approach. Due to the presence of quintessence, quasinormal
frequencies damp more slowly. We studied the variation of quasinormal
frequencies with charge of the black bole, mass and charge of perturbating
scalar field and the quintessential state parameter.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures and one tabl
Fishery, biology and stock structure of skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758) exploited from Indian waters
Global catches of skipjack tuna have been steadily
increasing since 1951, reaching a peak in 2009 at 25, 99,681 t
(Fig.1). Most of the catches were reported from the fishing
areas 71, 51, 61 and 34 (FA0, 2011). Globally skipjack
tuna is caught at the surface, mostly with purse seines and
pole and lines and to a small extent by gillnets, troll lines
and longlines. Gears like purse-seine and very long gillnets
enabled few nations to augment their production, whereas
traditional pole and line nations suffered heavily
An imbalance between specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators and pro-inflammatory leukotrienes promotes instability of atherosclerotic plaques
Chronic unresolved inflammation plays a causal role in the development of advanced atherosclerosis, but the mechanisms that prevent resolution in atherosclerosis remain unclear. Here, we use targeted mass spectrometry to identify specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPM) in histologically-defined stable and vulnerable regions of human carotid atherosclerotic plaques. The levels of SPMs, particularly resolvin D1 (RvD1), and the ratio of SPMs to pro-inflammatory leukotriene B4 (LTB₄), are significantly decreased in the vulnerable regions. SPMs are also decreased in advanced plaques of fat-fed Ldlr⁻/⁻ mice. Administration of RvD1 to these mice during plaque progression restores the RvD1:LTB₄ ratio to that of less advanced lesions and promotes plaque stability, including decreased lesional oxidative stress and necrosis, improved lesional efferocytosis, and thicker fibrous caps. These findings provide molecular support for the concept that defective inflammation resolution contributes to the formation of clinically dangerous plaques and offer a mechanistic rationale for SPM therapy to promote plaque stability
