As the development of the e-book devices, such as Kindle, iPad, smart phones and tablet notebook, and the appearance of aggregators, such as Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, and iBook store, there are substainable business models for the publishing industry to begin making profits. However, the e-book market is still in the early stage in Taiwan. The publishers question the e-book profit opportunity and whether the oversea business model would be able to apply to Taiwan. This study will foucs on the cost and profit structures among the publishers and the mobile content aggregators to find out the possible e-book business model in Taiwan. There were 20 book publishers and aggregators interviewd in Taiwan's e-book market. We found that the lack of the popular translated fictions was the major reason that readers do not buy the e-books. Unlike the popularity of Kindle or Nook in the U.S., the Taiwanese readers usually read the e-books from the computer or mobile phone. However, recently the publishers begin to own the Chinese more e-book copyrights of the popular translated fictions. Readers can buy those e-books later in many website or APP store through the mobile phone, tablet PC and iPad. We can expect that the e-book market will grow soon in a couple years. However, for the sustainable business model, the publishers and mobile aggregators still need to have other aggregissive marketing strategies to attract e-book buying

As the voice profits of the mobile phone companies continuously decline in Taiwan, they need to find other revenues from the digital contents to survive in the mobile age. The mobile phone companies had created several online platforms to sell digital video, music and books. Especially in the past two years, as more and more customers had the big screens of portable tablet PC or smart phones, the sale of the e-books becomes the major marketing strategy to promote the penetration of smart phones in Taiwan. However, few e-books were available in the mobile online platforms in the past few years, so this study conducted the survey of the book publishing industry to understand the major factors. The results show: first, few copyrights of the popular oversea books are available; second, only the book conglomerate are willing to take the risk to launch the e-book services; third, currently the sales of the e-books are not able to compensate the costs; fourth, there is no such a platform to let all kind of e-books available in Taiwan

The index construction of cross-media concentration in the digital era: A comparative study

In the convergence age of media, telecommunication and Internet, firms need more media contents, audiences or platforms to acquire the economics of scale or scope. Some critics argued that the traditional antitrust law handles the violation of horizontal and vertical merger & acquisition, but not for the conglomeration. If the conglomerate's shares are small in each individual market, whether the sum of the total shares will deter new competitors from entering the market requires further discussion. The KEK, the index of cross-media concentration used in German, is applied to examine the degree of multiple market concentration. However, this study found that for most countries they did not analyzed M&A cases by using the similar KEK index because there are many questions raised in the calculation and definition. Currently the antitrust law is practicable enough to keep the cross media competitive if the barrier could be removed and new entry could enter the market

Enabling Extreme Low Power Mode Based on Bluetooth Quality Reports

    Get PDF
Unchecked power consumption at low battery levels can hasten the shutdown of a device, causing inconvenience to the user. This disclosure describes an extreme low power mode for devices that have Bluetooth capabilities. At low battery levels, statistics of recent activities and current consumption of the Bluetooth controller, as obtained from Bluetooth quality reports (BQR), are used to adaptively select energy appropriate Bluetooth modes. In the extreme low power mode, the audio codec can be switched to one that minimizes current consumption; the frequency of Bluetooth/BLE advertising and scanning can be reduced; the frequency of BLE advertising reports can be limited; the radio-frequency transmission power can be reduced; etc. BQR, used traditionally for debugging and performance optimization, is repurposed to enhance user experience

Quick and convenient establishment of wireless communication

Communication between paired Bluetooth devices is not always immediate. This is because there are often several devices in the vicinity that are paired with a user’s device, and the user may need to go through a process of selecting one of the paired devices to route communications. This device selection procedure can be further complicated by the sometimes cryptic names assigned to the devices. Per the techniques of this disclosure, images of a Bluetooth accessory are captured at the time of pairing with a Bluetooth device. The user points a camera to the Bluetooth accessory to establish a communication path
