    Proof of Blum's conjecture on hexagonal dungeons

    Matt Blum conjectured that the number of tilings of the Hexagonal Dungeon of sides a, 2a, b, a, 2a, ba,\ 2a,\ b,\ a,\ 2a,\ b (where b2ab\geq 2a) is 132a214a2213^{2a^2}14^{\lfloor\frac{a^2}{2}\rfloor} (J. Propp, New Perspectives in Geometric Combinatorics, Cambridge University Press, 1999). In this paper we present a proof for this conjecture using Kuo's Graphical Condensation Theorem (E. Kuo, Applications of Graphical Condensation for Enumerating Matchings and Tilings, Theoretical Computer Science, 2004).Comment: 30 page

    Convergence properties of the effective interaction

    The convergence properties of two perturbative schemes to sum the so-called folded diagrams are critically reviewed, with an emphasis on the intruder state problem. The methods we study are the approaches of Kuo and co-workers and Lee and Suzuki.     Auxiliary potential in no-core shell-model calculations

    The Lee-Suzuki iteration method is used to include the folded diagrams in the calculation of the two-body effective interaction veff(2)v^{(2)}_{\rm eff} between two nucleons in a no-core model space. This effective interaction still depends upon the choice of single-particle basis utilized in the shell-model calculation. Using a harmonic-oscillator single-particle basis and the Reid-soft-core {\it NN} potential, we find that veff(2)v^{(2)}_{\rm eff} overbinds ^4\mbox{He} in 0, 2, and 4Ω4\hbar\Omega model spaces. As the size of the model space increases, the amount of overbinding decreases significantly. This problem of overbinding in small model spaces is due to neglecting effective three- and four-body forces. Contributions of effective many-body forces are suppressed by using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock single-particle Hamiltonian.Comment: 14 text pages and 4 figures (in postscript, available upon request).     Investigation of the starting transients of high performance solid-propellant motors

    The starting transients of solid propellant engines were investigated to develop design principles for predicting transients in high performance igniter and engine configurations. Research and diagnosis were conducted on the processes affecting ignition transients, such as heat flux, igniter, flame spreading over the surface, and nonsteady combustion gas dynamics. Abstracts of published reports related to this research are presented. Topics discussed include: development of an analytical model, analytical prediction of the entire ignition transient, transient behavior of pressure and regression rate during reignition after shut-down, and problems associated with restarting hybrid rocket engines
