    Discrete Frequency Selection of Frame-Based Stochastic Real-Time Tasks

    Energy-efficient real-time task scheduling has been actively explored in the past decade. Different from the past work, this paper considers schedulability conditions for stochastic real-time tasks. A schedulability condition is first presented for frame-based stochastic real-time tasks, and several algorithms are also examined to check the schedulability of a given strategy. An approach is then proposed based on the schedulability condition to adapt a continuous-speed-based method to a discrete-speed system. The approach is able to stay as close as possible to the continuous-speed-based method, but still guaranteeing the schedulability.     A Real-Time DataBase System (RTDBS) can be viewed as an amalgamation of a conventional DataBase Management System (DBMS) and a real-time system. Like a DBMS, it has to process transactions and guarantee ACID database properties. Furthermore, it has to operate in real-time, satisfying time constraints imposed on transaction commitments. A RTDBS may exist as a stand-alone system or as an embedded component in a larger multidatabase system. The publication in 1988 of a special issue of ACM SIGMOD Record on Real-Time DataBases signaled the birth of the RTDBS research area -- an area that brings together researchers from both the database and real-time systems communities. Today, almost eight years later, I am pleased to present in this special section of ACM SIGMOD Record a review of recent advances in RTDBS research. There were 18 submissions to this special section, of which eight papers were selected for inclusion to provide the readers of ACM SIGMOD Record with an overview of current and future research directions within the RTDBS community.     The Table of Contents for the workshop is contained in 1996-027-00main.pdfDear Colleagues: This year marks the beginning of a new tradition within the Real-Time Systems Symposium, that of holding special sessions for the presentation of new and on-going projects in real-time systems. The prime purpose of these Work In Progress (WIP) sessions is to provide researchers in Academia and Industry an opportunity to discuss their evolving ideas and gather feedback thereon from the real-time community at large. The idea of holding these sessions is timely, and I am pleased to report that this year RTSS'96 WIP received 22 submissions, of which 14 have been accepted for presentation during the symposium and for inclusion in RTSS'96 WIP proceedings. Many people worked hard to make the idea of holding the WIP sessions a reality. In particular, I would like to thank Sang Son for his hard work in accommodating the WIP sessions within the busy schedule of RTSS'96. Also, I would like to thank all members of the RTSS'96 Program Committee, Al Mok and Doug Locke in particular, for their encouragement and constructive feedback regarding the organization of these sessions. Finally, I would like to thank all those who submitted their work to RTSS'96 WIP and those from RTSS'96 program committee who helped review these submissions.
