Online Data Modeling to Improve Students’ Learning of Conceptual Data Modeling

    Get PDF
Traditionally, IS/IT educators teach data modeling by using top-down approach that starts from business rules, entity-relationship (E-R) diagram then normalization and ends with normalized E-R diagram. Another approach is bottom-up that analyzes business documents and then develop a data model. A laboratory study will be conducted that employed IS/IT students (novice designers) to compare the effectiveness of the two design approaches (between subjects) at three levels of task complexity (within subjects). The research design includes the conceptual framework, experimental design and sample tasks. Both design approaches will be covered in the three sections of Systems Analysis and Design course but with different sequence to eliminate bias

An Alternative Approach to Teaching Database Normalization: A Simple Algorithm and an Interactive eLearning Tool

    Get PDF
The relational data model is an important concept covered in the systems analysis and design course. It has been difficult to motivate students to learn database normalization because they find the subject dry and theoretical. An alternative approach has been developed to give students an easy-to-follow algorithm and an interactive, hands-on e-learning tool. The approach is suitable for database normalization in systems analysis and design and in database management courses. This paper describes the alternative approach and its effectiveness in teaching database normalization. The effectiveness of the approach has been evaluated in an exercise and a survey. The paper shows that the approach reduces error rate and increases students\u27 perceived ease, confidence and performance of the normalization approach

Online Data Modeling Tool to Improve Students\u27 Learning of Conceptual Data Modeling

Computer based instruction (CBI) has been used in science, mathematics, and engineering education, and showed positive outcomes. CBI is generally most effective when used as a supplement to traditional teaching. In this research-in-progress paper, the author presents an online data modeling tool as the supplement to data modeling teaching and proposes a research plan to measure students’ perceived effectiveness of the online tool

It has been difficult to motivate students to learn database normalization because students think the subject dry and theoretical. A web-based tool is developed to give students an interactive hands-on experience in database normalization process. The tool is suitable for relational data modeling in systems analysis and design and data management courses. This paper describes the web-based tool and its effectiveness in teaching relational data model. The effectiveness of the tool has been evaluated in surveys. The paper shows that the tool has a positive impact on students’ perception

A Neural Network Decision Method for Software Maintenance Life Cycle Identification

    Get PDF
The software maintenance life cycle concept is a powerful model in helping software maintenance planning. The operationalization of the life cycle concept requires a heuristic decision method. Although the heuristic decision method works most of the time, the method requires integration of different tools and sometimes leads to errors. In this paper, we propose a neural network decision method, which combines data smoothing and maintenance stage identification into one unit

A comprehensive characterization of aggravated aging-related changes in T lymphocytes and monocytes in end-stage renal disease: The iESRD study

Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) exhibit a premature aging phenotype of the immune system. Nevertheless, the etiology and impact of these changes in ESRD patients remain unknown. Results: Compared to healthy individuals, ESRD patients exhibit accelerated immunosenescence in both T cell and monocyte compartments, characterized by a dramatic reduction in naĂŻve CD4+ and CD8+ T cell numbers but increase in CD8+ TEMRA cell and proinflammatory monocyte numbers. Notably, within ESRD patients, aging-related immune changes positively correlated not only with increasing age but also with longer dialysis vintage. In multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models, the combination of high terminally differentiated CD8+ T cell level and high intermediate monocyte level, as a composite predictive immunophenotype, was independently associated with prevalent coronary artery disease as well as cardiovascular disease, after adjustment for age, sex, systemic inflammation and presence of diabetes. Levels of terminally differentiated CD8+ T cells also positively correlated with the level of uremic toxin p-cresyl sulfate. Conclusions: Aging-associated adaptive and innate immune changes are aggravated in ESRD and are associated with cardiovascular diseases. For the first time, our study demonstrates the potential link between immunosenescence in ESRD and duration of exposure to the uremic milieu
