The investigative significance of digital artefacts discovered in forensic images of household IoT devices using open-source software

As the IoT technology grows, forensic practitioners more often come across IoT devices that present significant challenges to their investigations. IoT devices lack any standardisation in design and security. As a result, the devices can be incredibly different to one another either by running other operating systems or using various data formats and network protocols. IoT devices also use Real-Time operating systems that only store data when used, creating challenges in the data acquisition stage and the analysis stage. The structure of the wider IoT environment also presents jurisdiction and data location challenges, such as identifying who owns the data and how to preserve its integrity. The forensic investigation in the IoT environment involves a combination of cloud forensics, network forensics, and device forensics where there is a lack of a systematic framework for investigation as well as suitable forensic tools. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of IoT datasets published by NIST was conducted to discover the evidential significance of data stored in these IoT devices in order to assist forensic practitioners in their investigations. Two open-source tools (Autopsy and bulk_extractor) were used in this research. Their performance was evaluated. A triage method was proposed to help investigators identify the most forensically valuable IoT devices in a crime scene. The proposal prioritised devices that contained the most significant evidence, which can be used as a starting point in any investigation

Integrating Social and Economic Models of Responding to Privacy Messages in Mobile Computing: A Research Agenda

    Get PDF
Mobile computing has provided technology to an unprecedented user base and has created a market for applications that is expected to reach $77 billion by 2017, involving over 268 billion downloads. Nearly every download involves privacy messages that request permissions to access information such as contact, calendar, and location information. Recent cases have revealed that users are often surprised when they discover the permissions they have granted, which implies that not everyone reads them carefully. In this paper we propose a research agenda focusing on the decisions that users make about those permissions requests. Several theories provide promising antecedents to explain acceptance of privacy permissions. Nine propositions are presented, with three from each research bases from social, economic, and cognitive perspectives. The research agenda thus is a combination hybrid social/economic/cognitive approach. The agenda complements extant research that has focused on privacy calculus theory

Late Diagnosis of Urinary Peritonitis Due to a Lesion of the Left Ureter During Laparoscopic Anterior Resection of the Rectum—Laparoscopic Solution. Clinical Case and Literature Review

Ureteral lesions are a rare complication of colorectal surgery. This type of surgical procedure is the second most common cause of such complications, second only to gynecological operations, which account for around 50%. According to the localization of the lesion, they аre grouped into three types: injury to the proximal, middle, and distal part of the ureter, with the latter being the most common—around 80–90%. Most of the lesions are not recognized intraoperatively and sometimes the diagnosis can be delayed significantly. The time of diagnosis and the localization of the injury are crucial to the choice of treatment. We present a case of a patient, with a late diagnosis of lesion of the left ureter after the laparoscopic anterior resection of the rectum, which was treated with a laparoscopic uretero-ureteral anastomosis with simultaneous double-J catheterization. We also present a short literature review on the subject

A case of pulmonary endarterectomy in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension - a happily completed odyssey

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a rare condition that is usually a consequence of prior acute pulmonary embolism. It is caused by persistent obstruction of pulmonary arteries by organized thrombi resulting in redistribution of blood flow and secondary pulmonary microvascular remodelling. Thus, pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary artery pressure are increased leading to right ventricle pressure overload, development of right heart failure and death. In eligible patients pulmonary endarterectomy is the standard of care and it can result in complete normalization of haemodynamics and right ventricular morphology and function. We present the case of a patient with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension with severe right ventricular dilation and dysfunction and refractory heart failure. After successful pulmonary endarterectomy we observed almost complete normalization of hemodynamics and restoration of right ventricular dimensions and function, as well as significant clinical improvement

Cardiac echinococcosis, a multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and treatment of this rare entity: two case reports and literature review

    No full text
We present two case reports of cardiac echinococcosis. Case 1 was a 33-year-old woman with hepatic and cardiac echinococcosis. The parasitic cyst was located intramyocardially in the free wall of the left ventricle leading to cranial dislocation of the left circumflex coronary artery (LCx). The patient was successfully operated. Case 2 was a 28-year-old woman with hepatic and cardiac echinococcosis. The parasitic cyst was located in the left ventricular myocardium in the area of the apex and manifested clinically as paroxysms of ventricular tachycardia. The ultrasound study showed a 3.2×2.8 cm cyst dislocating the papillary muscles and causing moderate mitral regurgitation. Bulgaria ranks first in the European Union in terms of the number of echinococcosis patients. Although cardiac involvement is uncommon, occurring in only 0.5%–2% of cases, it can cause a wide range of clinical symptoms. Multimodal imaging is a key step in the management of patients with cardiac involvement

When users are IT experts too: the effects of joint IT competence and partnership on satisfaction with enterprise-level systems implementation

Enterprise-level information systems (IS) are fundamental to businesses. Unfortunately, implementing these large-scale systems is a complex and risky endeavor. As a result, these initiatives must tap the expertise and active involvement of both the IS department and the enterprise\u27s functional areas. Past studies focusing on IS implementation teams consistently identify the IS department as the source of technical expertise and leadership, while functional department team members are typically relegated to the role of business experts. However, unlike the past, many business professionals are knowledgeable about information technology (IT) and are increasingly capable of contributing to IS implementations from a technical perspective as well as a business perspective. This study examines how IT competence held by both the IS department and the user department stakeholders contributes to user satisfaction with the enterprise-level system implementation. Specifically, this research introduces a theoretically grounded construct, joint IT competence, which emerges when the IS department and user department stakeholders integrate their individually held IT competences. The study\u27s results empirically demonstrate that joint IT competence is a key driver of user satisfaction in enterprise-level IS implementations. Although not as significant as joint IT competence, results show that partner-based leadership between the IS department and user stakeholders also influences user satisfaction with IS implementations
