    The social and morphological construction of a retail landscape in Tianjin, China

    The dramatic reform of the economy is a watershed in history of China that is denoted notably by the commodification of housing and land-use right. This work explores to what extent the change in the economic policy brings a corresponding change in a urban landscape. It inquires more specifically on how an urban landscape manifests shifts in the social and economic dimensions. This study zooms into an ordinary neighbourhood in Tianjin, China, to focus on the morphological and social production of a new retail landscape. By building a typology of six retail building types manifested at the periphery of large housing estates, it documents the genesis of a retail landscape and analyses its spatial relationships with the residential built environment. An investigation on the production process of each type provides an understanding of how a shift in political economy had its impact on the built environment. The results also speak about a continuous cultural model carried out in the morphological process in spite of the changing social environment. The results suggest a dialectic between the social and economic dimensions of city building and the material form. Keywords: morphological process, social production, retail landscape, China

    Virtual machine-based task scheduling algorithm in a cloud computing environment

    Virtualization technology has been widely used to virtualize single server into multiple servers, which not only creates an operating environment for a virtual machine-based cloud computing platform but also potentially improves its efficiency. Currently, most task scheduling-based algorithms used in cloud computing environments are slow to convergence or easily fall into a local optimum. This paper introduces a Greedy Particle Swarm Optimization (G&PSO) based algorithm to solve the task scheduling problem. It uses a greedy algorithm to quickly solve the initial particle value of a particle swarm optimization algorithm derived from a virtual machine-based cloud platform. The archived experimental results show that the algorithm exhibits better performance such as a faster convergence rate, stronger local and global search capabilities, and a more balanced workload on each virtual machine. Therefore, the G&PSO algorithm demonstrates improved virtual machine efficiency and resource utilization compared with the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm

    Are Ride-Hailing Services Safer Than Taxis? A Multivariate Spatial Approach with Accomodation of Exposure Uncertainty

    Despite many research efforts on ride-hailing services and taxis, limited studies have compared the safety performance of the two modes. A major challenge is the need for reliable mode-specific exposure data to model their safety outcomes. Moreover, crash frequencies of the two modes by injury severities tend to be spatially and inherently correlated. To fully address these issues, this study proposes a novel multivariate conditional autoregressive model considering measurement errors in mode-specific exposures (MVCARME). More specially, a classical measurement error structure is used to accommodate the uncertainty of mode-specific exposures estimated, and a multivariate spatial specification is adopted to capture potential spatial and inherent correlations. The model estimation is accelerated by an integrated nest Laplace approximation method. The census tracts in the city of Chicago are set as the spatial analysis unit. The mode-specific exposures (vehicle-mile-traveled) in each census tract are estimated by trip assignments using ride-hailing and taxi trip data in 2019. The modeling results indicate that both ride-hailing crashes and taxi crashes are positively associated with transportation factors (e.g., vehicle-mile-traveled, mode-specific vehicle-mile-traveled, and traffic signal numbers), land use factors (i.e., number of educational and alcohol-related sites), and demographic factors (e.g., median household income, transit ratio, and walk ratio). By comparison, the proposed model outperforms the others (i.e., negative binomial models and multivariate conditional autoregressive model) by yielding the lowest deviance information criterion (DIC), Watanabe-Akaike information criterion (WAIC), mean absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE). According to the results of t-tests, ride-hailing services are found to be prone to a higher risk of minor injury crashes compared with taxis, despite no significant difference between the risks of severe injury crashes. Methodologically, this study adds to the literature a robust safety evaluation approach for comparing crash risks of different modes. At the same time, practically, it provides researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers insights into the safety management of various mobility alternatives

    Improving Safety Service Patrol Performance

    Safety Service Patrols (SSPs) provide motorists with assistance free of charge on most freeways and some key primary roads in Virginia. This research project is focused on developing a tool to help the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) optimize SSP routes and schedules (hereafter called SSP-OPT). The computational tool, SSP-OPT, takes readily available data (e.g., corridor and segment lengths, turnaround points, average annual daily traffic) and outputs potential SSP configurations that meet the desired criteria and produce the best possible performance metrics for a given corridor. At a high level, the main components of the developed tool include capabilities to: a) generate alternative feasible SSP beat configurations for a corridor; b)predict incidents and SSP characteristics (e.g., incident frequency, SSP service time) for a given SSP beat configuration; c) estimate performance measures (e.g., SSP response time, number of incidents responded to); and d) identify and present the best SSP configuration(s) through visual aids that facilitate decision making. To generate the incident data needed for the simulation-based SSP-OPT tool, a hierarchical negative binomial model and a hierarchical Weibull model are developed for incident frequencies and incident durations, respectively, based on the historical incident data. These models have been found to be effective in simulating the spatiotemporal distribution of incidents along highway corridors and for generating their attribute data (e.g., incident type, duration). The simulation program employs a discrete event-based approach and requires a few calibration parameters (e.g., SSP vehicle speed). After calibrating the model, the validation results show good agreement with field observations when applied to a sample SSP corridor from I-95. A user interface is created for the SSP-OPT tool in MS Excel to facilitate data entry and visualization of the output metrics for a given corridor. The output includes the list of alternative feasible beat configurations and aggregated performance measures from multiple runs for each individual beat, as well as for each alternative beat configuration spanning the entire corridor. The proposed SSP optimization model could be applied to corridors with or without existing SSP service. The tool will help identify the best beat configurations to minimize SSP response times and maximize SSP response rates for a given number of SSP vehicles on a corridor. Implementing these optimal solutions in the field will result in travel time savings and improve highway safety since the SSP resources will be more efficiently utilized, thus reducing the impacts of incidents on traffic flow

    Should more attention be paid to polio sequela cases in China?

    Since ā€œGlobal Polio Eradication Initiativeā€ was launched by World Health Assembly in 1988, the incidence rate of polio has been reduced by more than 99%, and the whole world has entered a post polio era nowadays. China has been a polio free status recognized by World Health Organization for 22 years and most people believe that no more public health concerns need to be given. How is the population of polio survivors in China? What strategies of health economics and actions of public health for those with polio are ethically appropriate? This article, first of all, deeply summarizes and analyzes the history, current situation and unmet needs of population with polio sequelae and post-polio syndrome in China, and then, puts forward important issues faced by polio survivors who natural infected and who due to vaccine associated paralytic polio and vaccine derived poliovirus. The management of polio survivor is not only a medical and rehabilitation problem involving accessibility, accommodations, but also a public health issue, and most importantly, an ethical concern. Furthermore, from the perspective of ethics such as Justice and Cooperation, the author demonstrates the rationality and necessity of continuing to pay more attention to polio sequela cases at this stage in China. Finally, many valuable suggestions and practical recommendations are given
