Vortex Lattice Structure of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superconductors
In superconductors with singlet pairing, the inhomogeneous
Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is expected to be stabilized by a
large Zeeman splitting. We develop an efficient method to evaluate the
Landau-Ginzburg free energies of FFLO-state vortex lattices and use it to
simplify the considerations that determine the optimal vortex configuration at
different points in the phasediagram. We demonstrate that the order parameter
spatial profile is completely determined, up to a uniform translation, by its
Landau level index n and the vortex Lattice structure and derive an explicit
expression for the order parameter spatial profile that can be used to
determine n from experimental data.Comment: 6 pages with one embedded color figure. Minor changes. Final version

Internal Anisotropy of Collision Cascades
We investigate the internal anisotropy of collision cascades arising from the
branching structure. We show that the global fractal dimension cannot give an
adequate description of the geometrical structure of cascades because it is
insensitive to the internal anisotropy. In order to give a more elaborate
description we introduce an angular correlation function, which takes into
account the direction of the local growth of the branches of the cascades. It
is demonstrated that the angular correlation function gives a quantitative
description of the directionality and the interrelation of branches. The power
law decay of the angular correlation is evidenced and characterized by an
exponent and an angular correlation length different from the radius of
gyration. It is demonstrated that the overlapping of subcascades has a strong
effect on the angular correlation.Comment: RevteX, 8 pages, 6 .eps figures include
Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in disordered s-wave superconductors
The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is a superconducting state
stabilized by a large Zeeman splitting between up- and down-spin electrons in a
singlet superconductor. In the absence of disorder, the superconducting order
parameter has a periodic spatial structure, with periodicity determined by the
Zeeman splitting. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) approach, we investigate
the spatial profiles of the order parameters of FFLO states in a
two-dimensional s-wave superconductors with nonmagnetic impurities. The FFLO
state is found to survive under moderate disorder strength, and the order
parameter structure remains approximately periodic. The actual structure of the
order parameter depends on not only the Zeeman field, but also the disorder
strength and in particular the specific disorder configuration.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; minor change to text and added references;

Differential gaze behavior towards sexually preferred and non-preferred human figures
The gaze pattern associated with image exploration is a sensitive index of our attention, motivation and preference. To examine whether an individual’s gaze behavior
can reflect his/her sexual interest, we compared gaze patterns of young heterosexual men and women (M = 19.94 years, SD = 1.05) while viewing photos of plain-clothed male and female figures aged from birth to sixty years old. Our analysis revealed a clear gender difference in viewing sexually preferred figure images. Men displayed a distinctive gaze pattern only when viewing twenty-year-old female images, with more fixations and longer viewing time dedicated to the upper body and waist-hip region. Women also
directed more attention at the upper body on female images in comparison to male images, but this difference was not age-specific. Analysis of local image salience revealed that observers’ eye-scanning strategies could not be accounted for by low-level processes, such as analyzing local image contrast and structure, but were associated with
attractiveness judgments. The results suggest that the difference in cognitive processing of sexually preferred and non-preferred figures can be manifested in gaze patterns
associated with figure viewing. Thus, eye-tracking holds promise as a potential sensitive measure for sexual preference, particularly in men
Investigation of iterative image reconstruction in three-dimensional optoacoustic tomography
Iterative image reconstruction algorithms for optoacoustic tomography (OAT),
also known as photoacoustic tomography, have the ability to improve image
quality over analytic algorithms due to their ability to incorporate accurate
models of the imaging physics, instrument response, and measurement noise.
However, to date, there have been few reported attempts to employ advanced
iterative image reconstruction algorithms for improving image quality in
three-dimensional (3D) OAT. In this work, we implement and investigate two
iterative image reconstruction methods for use with a 3D OAT small animal
imager: namely, a penalized least-squares (PLS) method employing a quadratic
smoothness penalty and a PLS method employing a total variation norm penalty.
The reconstruction algorithms employ accurate models of the ultrasonic
transducer impulse responses. Experimental data sets are employed to compare
the performances of the iterative reconstruction algorithms to that of a 3D
filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm. By use of quantitative measures of
image quality, we demonstrate that the iterative reconstruction algorithms can
mitigate image artifacts and preserve spatial resolution more effectively than
FBP algorithms. These features suggest that the use of advanced image
reconstruction algorithms can improve the effectiveness of 3D OAT while
reducing the amount of data required for biomedical applications
Scaling of impact fragmentation near the critical point
We investigated two-dimensional brittle fragmentation with a flat impact
experimentally, focusing on the low impact energy region near the
fragmentation-critical point. We found that the universality class of
fragmentation transition disagreed with that of percolation. However, the
weighted mean mass of the fragments could be scaled using the pseudo-control
parameter multiplicity. The data for highly fragmented samples included a
cumulative fragment mass distribution that clearly obeyed a power-law. The
exponent of this power-law was 0.5 and it was independent of sample size. The
fragment mass distributions in this regime seemed to collapse into a unified
scaling function using weighted mean fragment mass scaling. We also examined
the behavior of higher order moments of the fragment mass distributions, and
obtained multi-scaling exponents that agreed with those of the simple biased
cascade model.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Eigen model as a quantum spin chain: exact dynamics
We map Eigen model of biological evolution [Naturwissenschaften {\bf 58}, 465
(1971)] into a one-dimensional quantum spin model with non-Hermitean
Hamiltonian. Based on such a connection, we derive exact relaxation periods for
the Eigen model to approach static energy landscape from various initial
conditions. We also study a simple case of dynamic fitness function.Comment: 10 pages. Physical Revew E vol. 69, in press (2004
An Efficient Plot Fusion Method for High Resolution Radar Based on Contour Tracking Algorithm
With the development of radar system, the problem of enormous raw data has drawn much attention. A plot fusion method based on contour tracking algorithm is proposed to detect extended targets in a radar image. Firstly, the characteristic of radar image in complex environment is revealed. Then, the steps of traditional method, region growing method, and the proposed method are introduced. Meanwhile, the algorithm of tracking the contour of an extended target is illustrated in detail. It is not necessary to scan all the plots in the image, because the size of target is considered in the proposed method. Therefore, the proposed method is much more efficient than several existing methods. Lastly, the performance of several methods is tested using the raw data of two scenarios in real world. The experiment results show that the proposed method is practical and most likely to satisfy the real-time requirement in various complex environment
