    Restoration of isotropy on fractals

    We report a new type of restoration of macroscopic isotropy (homogenization) in fractals with microscopic anisotropy. The phenomenon is observed in various physical setups, including diffusions, random walks, resistor networks, and Gaussian field theories. The mechanism is unique in that it is absent in spaces with translational invariance, while universal in that it is observed in a wide class of fractals.Comment: 11 pages, REVTEX, 3 postscript figures.     Traditional Herbal Medicine, Rikkunshito, Induces HSP60 and Enhances Cytoprotection of Small Intestinal Mucosal Cells as a Nontoxic Chaperone Inducer

    Increasing incidence of small intestinal ulcers associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has become a topic with recent advances of endoscopic technology. However, the pathogenesis and therapy are not fully understood. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Rikkunshito (TJ-43), a traditional herbal medicine, on expression of HSP60 and cytoprotective ability in small intestinal cell line (IEC-6). Effect of TJ-43 on HSP60 expression in IEC-6 cells was evaluated by immunoblot analysis. The effect of TJ-43 on cytoprotective abilities of IEC-6 cells against hydrogen peroxide or indomethacin was studied by MTT assay, LDH-release assay, caspase-8 activity, and TUNEL. HSP60 was significantly induced by TJ-43. Cell necrosis and apoptosis were significantly suppressed in IEC-6 cells pretreated by TJ-43 with overexpression of HSP60. Our results suggested that HSP60 induced by TJ-43 might play an important role in protecting small intestinal epithelial cells from apoptosis and necrosis in vitro

    Linking Antarctic glaciochemical records to past climate conditions (scientific paper)

    Deep Antarctic ice cores document the former states of the climatic system, the atmosphere, and the marine and terrestrial biospheres. However, questions do remain in the interpretation and the reliability of ice core chemical profiles in terms of atmospheric information. Data from the Dome C, Vostok, Dome F, and EPICA deep ice cores are used and compared in the discussions. First of all, the transfer functions of various gaseous and particulate compounds are not entirely understood and in the case of acid gases, strong post-deposition effects are observed at central Antarctic sites. It is emphasised that marine primary and secondary aerosol species may strongly interact during their long-range transport. Continental aerosol is important for the Antarctic impurity budget only in glacial environmental conditions. Its composition, as derived from Antarctic ice core glaciochemistry is discussed. As for the case of marine aerosol, the reaction of primary and gas-derived aerosol has to be considered. Finally, the possible impact of continental dust on marine biogenic activity shortly is discussed in the light of glaciochemical results

    Analysis of the accidents related to injection in the ICU at O university hospital

    本研究は,集中治療部(以下ICUとする)で発生しやすい注射事故の現状を把握し,今後の改善点を検討することを目的とした。O大学病院のICUにおいて1998年から2001年に提出された看護師の事故報告書を基礎資料とし,そのうち注射薬に関する事故報告103件を分析対象とした。報告書の内容から,①事故発生時の背景,②事故が患者へ与えた影響,③薬剤投与過程のどの段階における事故発生であったかについて分類,集計を行った。また,事故が患者へ与えた影響と,事故発生時の背景および薬剤投与過程との関連性について分析した。その結果,総事故件数のうち注射事故が56.3%を占め,月別では,5月, 4月,2月の順に多く,経験年数別では,ICU経験年数4年未満の看護師で事故発生率が高かった。患者影響レベルの高い事故は,人事異動月にICU経験年数4年未満で多かった。エラーマップでは,看護婦(時に医師)の実施,薬剤の投与量,指示速度に関するエラーが集中して多かった。In comparison with general award, intensive care unit (ICU) requires various acknowledge and skillful techniques for nurses. On these circumstances, especially, the drug administration or injection to patients would be a trigger of the serious trouble. In this study, we investigated the risk factors of the medical accidents related to drug administration in the ICU at O university hospital for last three years retrospectively. Conclusively, it was implicated that the nurses who work at the ICU for less than 4 years have been more involved in them and the troubles happened frequently when the new members joined.
