Aim: The present study is undertaken to find out if obesity especially, visceral fat has any correlation with cardiovascular sympathetic activity in female undergraduate medical students. Materials and methods: 24 females with mean age of 20 ± 2 of same community participated in the study. They were divided into 2 groups: Group I- Normal (BMI 30). Group II was again divided in to two subgroups, with normal visceral fat (VF), with increased visceral fat (>10). Visceral fat, BMI and resting metabolism were measured using OMRON HBF - 362. Base line systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured. Sympathetic nerve activity was assessed using hand grip dynamometer, 30% of Tmax was calculated and simultaneously BP changes were monitored. Results: Results were assessed using ‘t’ test. A statistically significant difference (< 0.05) was observed in resting metabolism, baseline SBP, DBP and sympathetic activity between normal and obese groups. Baseline SBP varied significantly with visceral fat within the obese group. Conclusion: The present study shows obesity increases sympathetic activity and visceral fat plays an important role in regulation of baseline BP, especially SBP even in young girls

Correlation of fine needle aspiration cytology with histopathology in the diagnosis of thyroid swellings

No full text
Introduction Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is now being accepted as the most cost-effective, minimally invasive technique with very low incidence of complications in the diagnosis of most of the thyroid lesions with an added advantage of segregating the patients of solitary thyroid nodule (STN) into operative and non-operative groups. Materials and Method A prospective longitudinal study was undertaken over a period of one year (2015) at the out-patient department of a medical college hospital in Tamil Nadu to determine the accuracy of FNAC in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value in comparison with histopathology in the diagnosis of a thyroid swelling. Patients with solitary thyroid nodule, in euthyroid state without serious medical disorders were included in our study. FNAC was performed with 23G needle, smears were fixed with ether-95% alcohol solution, and staining was performed using Papanicolaou’s stain. The thyroid specimen which was excised during the thyroidectomy procedure was processed in automated tissue processing units and sent for histopathological examination. Results The validity of FNAC in terms of sensitivity and specificity was assessed by comparing it with the histopathological examination. The sensitivity of FNAC in detecting all the benign and malignant type of thyroid lesions was found to be in the range of 80-100%, whereas the specificity and the positive predictive value was almost 100% and the negative predictive value was between 98-100%, for all the lesions detected by FNAC. The accuracy of detection of lesions through FNAC is almost 94%. Conclusion The use of FNAC has reduced the number of patients with solitary thyroid nodules undergoing unnecessary surgery and has led to proper planning of surgery in malignant cases

Molecularly nonstoichiometric crystals in phosphorus compounds

No full text
Molecularly nonstoichiometric crystals obtained as a result of differential occupation of sites with oxygen atom/phosphorus lone pair of electrons or with sulfur/selenium in three sets of phosphorus compounds are described. These are formed by a combination of (a) [CH2(6-t-Bu-4-MeC6H2O)2]PNMe2 (11) and [CH2(6-t-Bu-4-MeC6H2O)2]P(O)NMe2 (13), (b) [CH2(6-t-Bu-4-MeC6H2O)2]P(S)NMe2 (14) and [CH2(6-t-Bu-4-MeC6H2O)2]P(Se)NMe2 (15), and (c) [(2,6-Me2C6H3O)(O)P-μ-N-t-Bu]2 (16) and (2,6-Me2C6H3O)(O)P(μ-N-t-Bu)2P(O-2,6-Me2C6H3) (17). In the case of c, three different types of crystals with varying stoichiometry of 16 and 17 (1:9, 1:1.5, and 1:0.43) are obtained. The results are substantiated by the combined use of 31P NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. These observations suggest that we should be cautious with regards to the purity of samples when syntheses involving the oxidation of P(III) systems are reported. It is also emphasized that the apparent P-X distances in some of these crystals cannot actually be taken as true bond lengths

Palladium-Catalyzed Annulation of Allenes with Indole-2-carboxylic Acid Derivatives: Synthesis of Indolo[2,3‑c]pyrane-1-ones via Ar–I Reactivity or C–H Functionalization

No full text
Two methodologies, one involving Ar–I reactivity and the other through C–H functionalization, for the formation of indolo[2,3-c]pyrane-1-ones via the corresponding allenes, are presented. A highly efficient approach to indolo[2,3-c]pyrane-1-one derivatives through the Pd-catalyzed regioselective annulation of allenes with 3-iodo-1-alkylindole-2-carboxylic acids is described. This method is fairly general for a wide range of allenes affording the respective indolo[2,3-c]pyrane-1-ones in good to excellent yields. In addition, a Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative coupling of indole-2-caboxylic acid derivatives with allenes via direct C–H functionalization to afford the corresponding indolo[2,3-c]pyrane-1-ones in moderate to good yields has been developed

Exploring organic reactions using simple cyclodiphosphazanes

No full text
Phosphine-activated reactions of alkynes/alkenes/allenes as well as the Mitsunobu reaction involve a rich phosphorus chemistry. With the aid of simple cyclodiphosphazanes, characterization of many compounds analogous to the proposed intermediates in such reactions has been accomplished. Use of a cyclodiphosphazane in Pd-catalyzed N-arylation reactions is highlighted. Results on molecular non-stoichiometry in phosphorus compounds and on the use of chiral phosphorus systems are discussed. Synthesis of allenylphosphoramides involving a cyclodiphosphazane is also described. X-ray structures of the new compounds [(t-BuNH)(PhCH2CH(CN)CH2-)P(μ-N-t-Bu)2P(NH-t-Bu)]+[HCO3]- (13), [(t-BuNH)P(μ-N-t-Bu)2P(=N-t-Bu)-C(=CH2)CH(C6H4-4-Me)-P(O)(OCH2CMe2CH2O)] (18), [(i-PrNH)P(μ-N-t-Bu)2P(=N-i-Pr)-N(CO2-i-Pr)-NH(CO2-i-Pr)] (24), [(S)-(2-OH-1-C10H6-1'-C10H6-2'-O-P(O)(NH-t-Bu)2] (36) and [(t-BuNH)(O)P(μ-N-t-Bu)2P(O)(CH=C=CMe2)] (40) are also reported
