Nothing About Us Without Us: Combining Professional Knowledge with Service User Experience in Training about Mental Health and Learning Disabilities
Recent policy documents relating to people with learning disabilities have proposed that they be more fully included in generic mental health care provision. In practice such inclusion has been slow to proceed, hampered by factors which appear to include lack of knowledge and confidence on the part of generic mental health practitioners. Policy documents have also recommended training of practitioners by people with learning disabilities, which has been found to impact positively on confidence and attitudes. This study reports on a training session delivered to âImproving Access to Psychological Therapiesâ practitioners by a service user with learning disabilities who has accessed mental health services, together with a clinical psychologist and an honorary assistant psychologist. The practitioners were asked to rate their knowledge about and confidence in working with people with learning disabilities before and after the training. Participants rated themselves as having significantly greater knowledge and confidence following the training, and many of the qualitative reasons given for these changes mentioned the contribution of the service user. This paper includes details of her particular contribution to the training, together with her reflections on the experience of joint training, given in an interview with the assistant psychologist. It is concluded that joint training needs to be developed and its impact further researched
Use of medicinal plants in traditional health care practices: A case study in Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda District, Punjab (India)
A comprehensive study was conducted to document the available medicinal plants and their traditional applications among the local people from July 2018 to June 2019 in Talwandi Sabo town of Bathinda District of Punjab. Purposive sampling method was used to select traditional medicinal practitioners of the study area. A semi-structured questionnaire was prepared and personal interviews were conducted to gather firsthand information about ethno-medicinal plants. Analysis of data revealed the use of 88 medicinal plant species belonging to 77 genera and 42 families for the treatment of about 60 ailments. The highest number of plants were used for gastrointestinal problems, skin problems followed by respiratory diseases, skeletomuscular diseases and dental problems. Traditional healers are still playing a great role in the primary health care system of Talwandi Sabo. Some practitioners were ensuring the 100% results of their formulations against many serious diseases. Further, the scientific validation of these formulations should be done for getting new alternative medicines against these diseases
An Efficient Approach to Forecasting the NIFTY-50 Indian Stock Market's Daily Closing Price with Artificial Neural Networks
The most lucrative area of the financial industry is stock market trend forecasting. The incorporation of machine learning has improved the accuracy, accessibility, and dependability of stock market forecasts. This study compares and contrasts several machine learning methods, including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Base Pairing (RBF), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), and Single Layer Perceptron (SLP). The unique features of each method are also examined separately. Of these methods, the MLP algorithm produced better results. The inquiry explores the relationship between changes in the dollar exchange rate, the performance of NIFTY 50, Foreign Institution Investors' Gross Purchase (FII inflow), and Foreign Institution Investors' Gross Sale (FII outflow). For the study, daily average closing prices for the NIFTY 50, FII inflow, FII outflow, and Dollar are taken into account. The study covers a period of 5 years from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023. The NN Toolbox in Matlab is used in the analysis to evaluate the correlation between NIFTY 50, FII inflow, FII outflow, and Dollar exchange rates. A strong correlation has been found by the data analysis between Dollar values, FII inflow, FII outflow, and NIFTY 50

The Use of Traditional Plant Remedies in Hoshiarpur District of Punjab, India
The present investigation was carried out in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab to understand the use of medicinal plant species for various curative purposes. The study was undertaken through semi structured questionnaire. About 110 plant species belonging to 97 genera and 51 families were documented. Altogether 40 types of ailments have been taken care of by using these plant species. Leaves were the most useful part as compared to other plant parts for the treatment of various ailments. This is followed by fruits and seeds. Most of the remedies were prepared as mixtures of plants/plant parts to cure diseases like diarrhoea, cough & cold, vomiting etc. Informants were randomly selected irrespective of their sex between the ages of 30-95years. During investigation, it has been observed that the trend of traditional plant remedies is declining gradually
'Indo-Canadian experience' : a performance of voices of a socialization process of a 'brown' man in Canada
This critical, creative, nonfiction text captures what it means to be a âbrownâ man in âCanadianâ society; many of âusâ find âourâ socialization process traumatic, leading to alienation, low self-esteem, internalized racism, anger, crime and even outright violence. The complex nuances of âSikhâ racialization are revealed by creating a bricolage of literary styles and forms. I employ bricolage because a multivariate approach enables me to better explore and reveal the complexities, nuances and contradictions of being a âbrownâ man. My personal experiences of racialization are embedded throughout these works of poetry, prose and creative non-fiction. This collection of texts examines the shortcomings of âCanadianâ multiculturalism and their impacts on the socialization of âIndo-Canadianâ men by focusing on themes of racism, history, violence, immigrant labour, internalized racism and racial profiling. In doing so, this research focuses on two inter-related questions: 1. âWhat kinds of discursive and structural dimensions of âmulticulturalâ Canada maintain cultural stereotypes and forms of racism that I have experienced personally?â 2. âHow can I better understand and come to terms with my alienation as an âIndo-Canadianâ male in relation to how âbrownâ violence has been constructed by the media and in turn understood by the general public?â This thesis encourages the reader to acknowledge and examine his/her (mis)perceptions of âSikhs,â and in turn, to acknowledge and examine how his/her actions and inactions contribute to the sociological challenges that confront âIndo-Canadianâ men.Education, Faculty ofCurriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department ofGraduat
Meiotic Studies in Some Medicinal Angiosperms from Doaba Region of Punjab, India
The chromosome number and their behavior in 15 medicinal plant species collected from Doaba region of Punjab, India have been studied. The species have shown chromosome numbers like Basella rubra L. (n=22), Coccinia cordifolia Cogn. (n=12), Delphinium ajacis L. (n=8), Lens culinaris Medic. (n=7), Melilotus alba Desr. (n= 8), Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv. (n=10), Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze (n=9), Papaver rhoeas L. (n=7), Raphanus sativus L. (n=9), Sesamum indicum L (n=13), Tinospora cordifolia (Wild.) Hook.f.et Thoms. (n=13), Triticum aestivum L. (n=21), Vitex negundo L. (n=17), Xanthium strumarium L. (n=18) and Zea mays L. (n=10). Most of the species are diploid with normal course of meiosis. But meiotic abnormalities in the form of univalents, stickiness and presence of supernumerary B-chromosomes have also been observed in some species. All the species have some medicinal value. The chromosome counts in these species are in conformity with the earlier reports, but behavioral changes have been observed in some species. This shows the genetic stability and resistance of these species to various biotic and abiotic stresses
