Multinational Cultural Heritage In The Landscape Of Contemporary Poland
Published in: Society and Space in Contemporary Poland in Łódź University Geographical Research, edited by T.MarszałIt should also be noted that in recent years, we have been noticing the foreign influences and have not been bothered by the non-Polish elements. We can find as many foreign traces in Polish cultural landscape, as there are Polish elements all over Europe and often far away from it. Both are parts of the same world cultural heritage that is so hard to classify or include in just one culture. Poland has more than a 1000-year history of statehood, which left a number of marks in the land. Many of its historic buildings can be found in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which shows how influential cultures of different countries are on the overall European culture. The presence of many Polish monuments in the UNESCO list makes us proud, but also shows how countries unite and appreciate each other’s heritage
Conzenian Tradition in Polish Urban Historical Morphology
The scientific heritage of M. R. G. Conzen, who is considered one of the most outstanding historical geographers and urban morphologists in the world, has made a huge impact on the contemporary urban historic morphology. Nowadays it would be very hard to imagine this scientific discipline without his achievements. He created a new point of view on the city, first within the Anglo-Saxon, and afterwards within European and world geography. Morphogenetic methods, the conceptualisation of historic development, terminological precision as well as cartographic analysis that were typical of his approach, more and more often were considered essential for the development and the role of research on historic urban landscape. This resulted in the increasing interest in morphological studies on an international scale. In Poland, M. R. G. Conzen’s opinions have become recognizable since 1960, finding permanent place in urban historic morphology and providing stimuli for its significant development in the following decades
Sudakov Logarithm Resummation for Vector Boson Production at Hadron Colliders
A complete description of W and Z boson production at high-energy colliders
requires the resummation of large Sudakov logarithms which dominate the
production at small transverse momentum. Currently there are two techniques for
performing this resummation: impact parameter space and transverse momentum
space. We argue that the latter can be formulated in a way which retains the
advantages of the former, while at the same time allowing a smooth transition
to finite order dominance at high transverse momentum.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, epsfig, contribution to the proceedings of

Learning Determinantal Point Processes
Determinantal point processes (DPPs), which arise in random matrix theory and
quantum physics, are natural models for subset selection problems where
diversity is preferred. Among many remarkable properties, DPPs offer tractable
algorithms for exact inference, including computing marginal probabilities and
sampling; however, an important open question has been how to learn a DPP from
labeled training data. In this paper we propose a natural feature-based
parameterization of conditional DPPs, and show how it leads to a convex and
efficient learning formulation. We analyze the relationship between our model
and binary Markov random fields with repulsive potentials, which are
qualitatively similar but computationally intractable. Finally, we apply our
approach to the task of extractive summarization, where the goal is to choose a
small subset of sentences conveying the most important information from a set
of documents. In this task there is a fundamental tradeoff between sentences
that are highly relevant to the collection as a whole, and sentences that are
diverse and not repetitive. Our parameterization allows us to naturally balance
these two characteristics. We evaluate our system on data from the DUC 2003/04
multi-document summarization task, achieving state-of-the-art results
DYNAMICS OF THE REAL ESTATE PRICES IN THE LIGHT OF THE CATASTROPHE THEORY
The paper describes application of catastrophe theory for analysis of trends of real estate prices inPoznan. It turns out that the evolution of the real estate market is comprised of two main processes: long-term evolution in the area of a non-degenerate stability and discontinuous, rapid changes in the area of a degenerate stability. In the macro scale, the construction and developing branch contributes largely to the Gross Domestic Product affecting overall economic environment. In the micro scale, however, the knowledge about future price trends may help to decide whether or not to buy or sell the house property
On the Resummation of Subleading Logarithms in the Transverse Momentum Distribution of Vector Bosons Produced at Hadron Colliders
The perturbation series for electroweak vector boson production at small
transverse momentum is dominated by large double logarithms at each order in
perturbation theory. An accurate theoretical prediction therefore requires a
resummation of these logarithms. This can be performed either directly in
transverse momentum space or in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space.
While both approaches resum the same leading double logarithms, the subleading
logarithms are, in general, treated differently. We comment on two recent
approaches to this problem, emphasising the particular subleading logarithms
resummed in each case and the numerical differences in the cross sections which
result.Comment: 13 (Latex) pages, including 5 embedded figures, uses epsfig.st
