Utilization and biodegradation of starch stillage (distillery wastewater)
Stillage (distillery wastewater) is the main by-product originating in
distilleries, and its volume is approximately 10 times that of ethanol
produced. It is not surprising that the utilization of the stillage
raises serious problems, and that many attempts have been made all over
the world to solve them. In Poland most of the ethanol (about 90%) is
produced from starch-based feedstocks, i.e. grains and potatoes. Starch
feedstocks are widely used for spirit production also in other European
countries, as well as outside Europe. The manuscript provides an
overview of global fuel ethanol production and information on methods
used for starch-based stillage biodegradation and utilization. The
methods presented in this paper have been classified into two major
groups. One of these includes the mode of utilizing starch stillage,
the other one comprises methods, both aerobic and anaerobic, by which
the stillage can be biodegraded
National fruit valuable raw materials for the production of fruit wine
Dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa na temat możliwości wykorzystania krajowych
jabłek, aronii, wiśni, czarnej porzeczki i innych tego typu produktów do produkcji win
owocowych. Scharakteryzowano te owoce pod kątem zawartości związków polifenolowych,
przeciwutleniaczy i in. Związki te mogą zapobiegać m.in. chorobom serca i naczyniowym;
mają działanie przeciwkancerogenne, a także łagodzą ból i przeciwdziałają stresowi. Wiele
The aim of the study was the review of literature on fruit wine production not
only from grapes but also but also from other fruit such as apples, chokeberries, sour cherries,
black currants and others. Fruit contains significant amount of chemicals such as antioxidants,
which can profitably affect human health: prevent heart and vessels diseases as well as cancer,
relieve pain and prevent stress, which nowadays we are exposed to. A lot of fruit are used for
the production of fruit wine both in industry and at home. Based on the available literature it
can be stated that it is possible to obtain wine of very good quality, full of good taste, which is
quite different from the taste of grape wine
Factors shaping the quality of wine
Wybór odpowiedniej lokalizacji to ważny czynnik przy zakładaniu nowej
winnicy.
W Polsce
zaledwie kilka procent powierzchni gruntów spełnia warunki umożliwiające założenie win-
nic. Celem pracy było omówienie wpływu głównych czynników zewnętrznych, innych niż
wybór szczepu, na jakość wina i wydajność owocowania winorośli. Skupiono się na dwóch
głównych grupach czynników, tj. warunkach klimatycznych i przechowywaniu. Opracowanie

Removal of biogens from synthetic wastewater by microalgae
Removal of biogens (P, N) from synthetic wastewater by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was investigated. The study was carried out under static conditions (batch tests). Significant differences were found in the removal of nutrients by algae. The removal of biogens was >50% for ammonium ions and >80% for nitrates and phosphates. N and P removal through assimilation by microalgal C. vulgaris species can be considered an ecological alternative for current methods applied for removal of these substances from wastewater. It seems that using algae for N and P removal from wastewater can be affordable in comparison to other methods. The efficiency of biogens removal depends on the type of a biogen to be removed and the concentration of N and P in solutions. Optimization of N:P ratio can have some positive influence on the removal of biogens from wastewater by C. vulgaris
Whole Wheat Stillage as an Attractive Feedstock for Ethanol 2nd Generation Biofuel – Effect of Pretreatment on Chemical Composition
W pracy zbadano przebieg kwasowej hydrolizy surowego pszenicznego wywaru gorzelniczego prowadzonej w temperaturze 121°C, określono wpływ zastosowanych parametrów hydrolizy (czas reakcji (15 i 30 min.) i stężenie kwasu (1, 3 i 5%)) i uzyskany skład chemiczny frakcji produktów. The influence of the acidic hydrolysis (reaction time (15 and 30 min.) and acid concentration (1, 3 and 5% H2SO4)) conducted at 121°C on chemical composition of the raw wheat stillage fractions has been studied. After hydrolysis, an attempt was made to detoxify, i.e. to remove substances (mainly furfurals) that inhibit the course of ethanol fermentation. At 30 min. the effect of H2SO4 concentration on the obtained detoxification results was small. In turn, with 15 min., the use of H2SO4with different concentrations had an effect on detoxification. In the case of furfural (FA), the most favorable result was obtained using 1% H2SO4, while for hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) – 5% H2SO4, the degree of FA detoxification reached 96% and HMF 88%. Removal of FA and HMF from the acidic hydrolysis fractions adversely affected the content of monosaccharides. The exception were the experiments in which 1% H2SO4and the reaction time 30 min. was used to hydrolyze the raw wheat stillage
