I-Corps as a Training Tool for New Technology Development
Innovation Corps is a program developed by the National Science Foundation where university scientists and students learn entrepreneurial skills that enable them to take their research beyond the laboratory and discover the commercial potential of their innovation. I-Corps Sites, located at several universities, offer shortened curricula to qualify teams for participation in the national I-Corps program (NSF I-Corps Teams). The core topics covered in I-Corps Sites’ curricula teach teams about the importance of customer discovery; the teams are expected to leave the lab and personally interview 20+ potential customers to determine their product-market fit
Optimization of Oleosin 30G Production for Echocardiography
Provided they are uniform in size, monodisperse microbubbles behave as contrast agents to enhance echocardiographic imaging. Compounds like Oleosin 30G with surfactant-like properties help stabilize microbubbles - thereby ensuring their uniform size. Designed herein is an industrial-scale plant to produce medical-grade Oleosin 30G with a process consisting of three steps: 1) upstream production via recombinant E. coli in an integrated batch bioprocessing model, 2) downstream purification, and 3) processing by microfluidic manifolds. Ultimately Oleosin 30G-coated microbubbles are manufactured, ready for injection within one month. Owing to its unique properties and cost-effective production, Oleosin 30G has the potential to outcompete current market leader Definity®. Altogether, overall yield of Oleosin 30G constitutes 7.39 kg/year to provide for 100% market saturation. Financial analysis indicates pursuing Oleosin 30G for echocardiography applications is very profitable with a 296% return on investment and holds potential for production expansion should the market demand increase
Problems in designig and rebuilding of bridges and culverts
The paper covers problems in designing and rebuilding of bridges and culverts. All bridges should be designed with taking into consideration environmental determinants and requirements of durability. On selected examples of existing objects like bridges and culverts there were shown the practical aspects of their designing and rebuilding
The Polish Immigration Committee in the United States: A Historical Study of the American Committee for the Relief of Polish Immigrants, 1947-1952
Formulation and Background of the Study. The recent movement to the United States of displaced persons and refugees has aroused unusual interest, because of its dramatic character, the large numbers and different types of people involved and the international unrest characterizing the period when it occurred. People in America are interested in knowing the facts concerning these people, the non-governmental or private agencies that handled this problem; their resettlement, adjustment and assimilation into the United States and finally how this program worked and who made it work
The comparative analysis of carrying capacity for construction elements of steel hall according to PN-90/B-03200 and PN-EN 1993-1-1
Przedstawiono porównanie stopni wykorzystania nośności oraz oceny bezpieczeństwa elementów stalowej
hali. Nośność elementów wyznaczono na podstawie norm PN-90/B-03200 i PN-EN 1993-1-1. Analizę przeprowadzono
dla przemysłowej hali stalowej z transportem podpartym. Układ nośny hali stanowią jednonawowe ramy, w których slupy
połączone są przegubowo z dźwigarem kratowym i sztywno z fundamentem. Ekstremalne wartości sił w głównych
elementach konstrukcji (dźwigar kratowy, belka podsuwnicowa, słupy) wyznaczono w programie Autodesk Robot
Structural Professional 2012. W celu miarodajnego porównania wyników analizy statyczno-wytrzymałościowej
wprowadzono stopnie wykorzystania nośności elementów zwymiarowanej zgodnie z normami PN-B i PN-EN.
Zastosowano regresję liniową do oceny trendu i rozrzutu wyników oraz wyznaczono współczynnik korelacji. The aim of this paper was to compare rates
of utilization of capacity of steel structure elements calculated
according to the Polish Standard PN-90/B-03200 and Eurocodes
PN-EN 1993-1-1. The elements of steel hall were calculated
with the procedures ULS and SLS and the rates of utilization
of capacity of them were placed in tabular. Based on this
calculation the regression curves for all of analysed elements
and only for truss were done. It was proved that the rates
of utilization of capacity calculated according to Eurocode 3
increased in compare to the rates calculated according to Polish
Standard. This increasing was caused by changes in values
of partial safety factors of actions in EC0 and EC1. That can
lead to more safety designing of steel structure but more
expensive too
Nonlinear elastic-plastic 3d-fi nite element modelling of semi-rigid steel end–plate connections
Although the effect of semi-rigid steel beam-to-column connections on the
behaviour of steel frames and their substantial economical benefits are recognized
nowadays, many structural analyses still consider connections as either fixed or
pinned. For that reasons, there is need to be able the generate moment-rotation
responses of semi-rigid connections that can be used for analysis and design
proposes. Numerical elastic-plastic 3D finite models was performed in order to
establish a numerical analysis method for evaluating deformation of extended
end-plate-beam-to-column joint for varying thickness of end plates. There were
used contact elements between bolts and beam and column. This kind of model
was generated by using the FEM software package ANSYS version 14. The study
were performed the infl uence of thickness of end plates on moment-rotation curves
for analysing joints and proved that the FE technique was capable of prediction
connection response to an acceptable degree of accuracy

Recent research and development in composite structures
Composite steel–concrete and concrete-concrete structures represent an efficient
and economical form of construction for building and bridge applications.
Composite structures, exploring advantages of concrete and structural steel, have
been increasingly applied in commercial and parking buildings. This paper presents
state of art, achievementsand new experimental works of concrete-concrete and
steel-concrete structures. There are described experimental studies on composite
beams with partial use fi bre reinforced concrete. The researches on composite
joints and steel-concrete beams are presented and additionally new method of FE
modelling of such structures are shown
Numerical simulation of beam-to-column joints with flange cleats
Although the effect of semi-rigid steel beam-to-column connections on the behaviour of steel frames and their substantial economic benefits are recognized nowadays, many structural analyses still consider connections as either fixed or pinned. For that reasons, there is need to be able the generate moment-rotation responses of semi-rigid connections that can be used for analysis and design proposes. Characteristic of the joints can be found using FEM models. The objective of the analysis was to find moment-rotation curves for beam-to-column joints with flange cleats and compare them to curves obtained from experimental studies. Numerical elastic-plastic 3D finite models was performed in order to establish a numerical analysis method for evaluating deformation of connections. For all joints there were obtained the FE results lightly underestimates results achieved from experiments. Some differences in the initial value of stiffness and resistances indicate the need for further work on improving FEM models. The inclusion of dimensional deviations of the IPE nad HEB sections, variability in the values of the prestressing forces of the bolts and the not centric positions of the bolts in the holes in the FEM model may contribute to increasing the degree of compliance of the results from experimental and numerical analyzes
