Magnetic interactions and spin dynamics in the bond-disordered pyrochlore fluoride NaCaCoF
We report high-frequency/high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) and
high-field magnetization studies on single crystals of the bond-disordered
pyrochlore NaCaCoF. Frequency- and temperature-dependent ESR
investigations above the freezing temperature K reveal the
coexistence of two distinct magnetic phases. A cooperative paramagnetic phase,
evidenced by a gapless excitation mode, is found as well as a spin-glass phase
developing below 20 K which is associated with a gapped low-energy excitation.
Effective -factors close to 2 are obtained for both modes in line with
pulsed high-field magnetization measurements which show an unsaturated
isotropic behavior up to 58 T at 2 K. In order to describe the field-dependent
magnetization in high magnetic fields, we propose an empirical model accounting
for highly anisotropic ionic -tensors expected for this material and taking
into account the strongly competing interactions between the spins which lead
to a frustrated ground state. As a detailed quantitative relation between
effective -factors as determined from ESR and the local -tensors obtained
by neutron scattering [Ross et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 014433 (2016)] is still
sought after, our work motivates further theoretical investigations of the
low-energy excitations in bond-disordered pyrochlores.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Long Range Magnetic Order and the Darwin Lagrangian
We simulate a finite system of confined electrons with inclusion of the
Darwin magnetic interaction in two- and three-dimensions. The lowest energy
states are located using the steepest descent quenching adapted for velocity
dependent potentials. Below a critical density the ground state is a static
Wigner lattice. For supercritical density the ground state has a non-zero
kinetic energy. The critical density decreases with for exponential
confinement but not for harmonic confinement. The lowest energy state also
depends on the confinement and dimension: an antiferromagnetic cluster forms
for harmonic confinement in two dimensions.Comment: 5 figure
Lifshitz transition and van Hove singularity in a Topological Dirac Semimetal
A topological Dirac semimetal is a novel state of quantum matter which has
recently attracted much attention as an apparent 3D version of graphene. In
this paper, we report critically important results on the electronic structure
of the 3D Dirac semimetal Na3Bi at a surface that reveals its nontrivial
groundstate. Our studies, for the first time, reveal that the two 3D Dirac
cones go through a topological change in the constant energy contour as a
function of the binding energy, featuring a Lifshitz point, which is missing in
a strict 3D analog of graphene (in other words Na3Bi is not a true 3D analog of
graphene). Our results identify the first example of a band saddle point
singularity in 3D Dirac materials. This is in contrast to its 2D analogs such
as graphene and the helical Dirac surface states of a topological insulator.
The observation of multiple Dirac nodes in Na3Bi connecting via a Lifshitz
point along its crystalline rotational axis away from the Kramers point serves
as a decisive signature for the symmetry-protected nature of the Dirac
semimetal's topological groundstate.Comment: 5 pages, 4 Figures, Related papers on topological Fermi arcs and Weyl

Mars Tumbleweed: FY2003 Conceptual Design Assessment
NASA LaRC is studying concepts for a new type of Mars exploration vehicle that would be propelled by the wind. Known as the Mars Tumbleweed, it would derive mobility through use of the Martian surface winds. Tumbleweeds could conceivably travel greater distances, cover larger areas of the surface, and provide access to areas inaccessible by conventional vehicles. They would be lightweight and relatively inexpensive, allowing a multiple vehicle network to be deployed on a single mission. Tumbleweeds would be equipped with sensors for conducting science and serve as scouts searching broad areas to identify specific locations for follow-on investigation by other explorers. An extensive assessment of LaRC Tumbleweed concepts was conducted in FY03, including refinement of science mission scenarios, definition of supporting subsystems (structures, power, communications), testing in wind tunnels, and development of a dynamic simulation capability
Determination of the Michel Parameters rho, xi, and delta in tau-Lepton Decays with tau --> rho nu Tags
Using the ARGUS detector at the storage ring DORIS II, we have
measured the Michel parameters , , and for
decays in -pair events produced at
center of mass energies in the region of the resonances. Using
as spin analyzing tags, we find , , , , and . In addition, we report
the combined ARGUS results on , , and using this work
und previous measurements.Comment: 10 pages, well formatted postscript can be found at

Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle
We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using
a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB
electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in
four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be
compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits
for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level.
These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization
used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by
one order of magnitude
