The impact of lean practices on inventory turnover
Lean manufacturing (LM) is currently enjoying its second heyday. Companies in several industries are implementing leanpractices to keep pace with the competition and achieve better results. In this article, we will concentrate on how companies can improve their inventoryturnover performance through the use ofleanpractices. According to our main proposition, firms that widely apply leanpractices have higher inventoryturnover than those that do not rely on LM. However, there may be significant differences in inventoryturnover even among lean manufacturers depending on their contingencies. Therefore, we also investigate how various contingency factors (production systems, order types, product types) influence theinventoryturnoveroflean manufacturers. We use cluster and correlation analysis to separate manufacturers based onthe extent of their leanness and to examine the effect of contingencies. We acquired the data from the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS) in ISIC sectors 28–35
A marketing, a termelés és a logisztika hozzájárulása a vállalati eredményességhez (The Contribution of Marketing, Production and Logistics to Business Performance)
A Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem Versenyképességkutató Központjának 2004-ben lekérdezett kérdőíve alapján, ami 154 feldolgozóipari vállalat adatait tartalmazza,
_____ Companies are complex organizations where a lot of activities and processes have to
work properly in order to reach success. Depending on several factors, sometimes
some activities get more emphasis while others work in the background. Since organizational
functions have separate literature and practical knowledge, and transit
between them is rare, we do have very little knowledge on how the various functions
together contribute to company success. Based on a wide-scale empirical study on
Hungarian competitiveness, which includes data on 154 companies from the process
industry, we examine to what extent three functions of the supply chain, marketing,
manufacturing and logistics, can contribute to business success. Results show
that marketing and manufacturing have larger effect on company performance than
logistics. However, the three functions together play a minor, although significant
role in company success
Szolgáltatásmenedzsment Magyarországon a termelő- és a szolgáltatóvállalatoknál (Service management at the manufacturing and service companies in Hungary)
egyre nagyobb arányt képviselő szolgáltatószektorban, hanem a termelővállalatoknál is.
adatai alapján mit tudunk mondani ma Magyarországon a szolgáltatásokról.
a szolgáltatók. Erőfeszítéseiket nemcsak a szolgáltatásminőség javítására, hanem a szolgáltatásnyújtási
folyamat fejlesztésére is fordítják. A nagyobb erőfeszítés pedig erőteljesebb hatást gyakorol a vállalatok
jövedelmezőségére és a vevői érték növekedésére egyaránt. ______ Service activities nowadays play a crucial role in developed economies.
This statement is true not only in the ever increasing service sector,
but also at manufacturing companies. This study gives a picture
about services in the Hungarian economy on the basis of the 3rd round competitiveness survey organized by the Competitiveness Research Centre of Corvinus University of Budapest. Some hypotheses based on classical service management issues are tested. According to the most important conclusions, manufacturing companies in Hungary are more prepared today to provide services than the service sector itself. Manufacturing companies put efforts both into improving service quality and processes. And these efforts appear in increasing profitability and customer value
Üzleti alapfolyamatok és funkciók (Kutatócsoport zárótanulmány) ----- It's title in English: Primary business processes and functions – research group final report
Absztrakt:
Abstract:
This final report was made on the basis of 16 working papers within the “Primary business processes and functions” research group. Two third of the papers used the 2009 round of the Competitiveness survey as an empirical base. This report shortly summarizes the main thoughts of the working papers along the terms of sustainability, purchasing, innovation, production, lean management and others, and then draws some conclusion
Szolgálatosodás, avagy az integrált termék-szolgáltatás rendszerek kialakulása és jellemzői = Servitization – characteristics and development of integrated product-service systems
A tanulmány középpontjában a szolgálatosodás folyamata, vagy más néven az átfogó megoldásokat kínáló integrált termék-szolgáltatás rendszerek kialakulása áll. Áttekintjük a szolgálatosodás XIX. századra visszanyúló kialakulásának tényezőit, és a jelenlegi vállalatok előtt álló fejlődési lehetőségeket. Foglalkozunk e rendszerekhez szükséges képességek kérdéseivel és a sikeres termék-szolgáltatás rendszerek kialakításának folyamataival. Az irodalmi összefoglalás célja, hogy a vállalati üzletfejlesztéssel foglalkozó szakembereknek, a vállalati vezetőknek ötleteket adjon a sikeres fejlődéshez és egyben a lehetséges kockázatok elkerüléséhez. = The emerging theme of servitization, or in other words, the integrated product-service systems providing complex solutions to customer demand are in the focus of this study. We overview the factors leading to servitization, and highlight the improvement opportunities in this field. The capabilities required and the development steps of successful servitization are also addressed. The objective of this short literature review is to provide ideas for business development experts and top managers on how to develop their business successfully and how to avoid risks in this development
Szolgáltatások versenyképességének elemzése vállalati példák alapján
A szolgáltatások ma már a magyar gazdaság jövedelmének kétharmadát állítják elő. Ezért e szektor versenyképességi
jellemzőinek megismerése és fejlődési tendenciáinak feltárása elengedhetetlen feladat a versenyképességet
kutatók számára. E cikk első része (Demeter, 2009, Vezetéstudomány, 2. sz.) kérdőívek
felhasználásával vizsgálta a szolgáltató vállalatok működését, összehasonlítva őket a termelő szektor vállalataival
is.
The impact of external market factors on operational practices and performance of companies
The links between operational practices and performance are well studied in the literature, both theoretically and
empirically. However, mostly internal factors are inspected more closely as the basis of operational performance,
even if the impact of external, environmental factors is often emphasized. Our research fills a part of this existing
gap in the literature. We examine how two environmental factors, market dynamism and competition impact the
use of some operational practices (such as quality improvement, product development, automation, etc.) and the
resulting operations and business performance.
The method of path analysis is used. Data were acquired through an international survey (IMSS – International
Manufacturing Strategy Survey), which was executed in 2005, in 23 participating countries in so called
"innovative" industries (ISIC 28-35) with a sample of 711 firms. Results show that both market dynamism and
competition have large impact on business performance, but the indirect effects, through operations practices are
rather weak compared to direct ones. The most influential practices are from the area of process and control, and
quality management
Úton a megoldásalapú gondolkodás felé – szolgálatosodási jellemzők magyarországi termelővállalatoknál (Towards solution-based thinking: characteristics of servitization at Hungarian manufacturing companies)
A cikk fő célja a magyarországi termelővállalatok szolgálatosodási folyamatának jellemzése a versenyképesség-
jelenséget inkább a fejlett országokban vizsgálja.
mind stratégiai, mind működési szinten jelentősebb hangsúlyt fektetnek a szolgáltatások nyújtására. Fontos
_______ The main purpose of the authors is to describe the servitization
process of Hungarian manufacturing companies
based on data of the Competitiveness research. The relevance
of this article is given by the fact that international
literature analyzes this phenomenon mainly in developed
countries. In the present paper they analyze to what extent
characteristics of the servitization process, generally accepted in the literature, are also applicable in a developing
macroenvironment, i.e. Hungary. They approach servitization
from three different perspectives: strategy, operations
and financial payoffs. Results of their analysis show
that, in concordance with the literature, the strategic role
of services at the Hungarian manufacturing companies is
still lower than other manufacturing competitive priorities.
However, their sample contains a number manufacturing
companies that place a greater emphasis on offering services
both on strategic and operational level. An important
conclusion of their study is that in case of these companies
financial benefits attributable to higher levels of servitization do not yet seem to materialize
Lean termelés és üzleti teljesítmény – nemzetközi empirikus eredmények (Lean production and business performance – international empirical results)
A lean termelés javít a vállalatok operatív teljesítményén. Korábbi kutatásokkal összhangban ezt nemzetközi
kérdőíves felmérésből származó eredmények is alátámasztják. A szerzők kutatásukban – kifejezetten a több lean
eszközt elmélyülten használó és jó operatív eredményekkel rendelkező ún. haladó lean termelők üzleti eredményeire
fókuszálva – azonosították az üzleti teljesítményt befolyásoló tényezőket. Bár számos tényező kívül
esik a termelésmenedzsment hatáskörén (pl. piaci dinamika, új piacra lépők száma, személyre szabás),
____________ The lean production has improved the operational performance of companies. However a clear link between lean production and business performance can not be detected. In
their research the authors have identified the factors affecting business performance focusing on business results of the advanced lean producers. Although a direct connection is not detected between lean production and business performance, but according to the author expects the continuously improving operational performance shall be a base for the balanced and stable business performance
Business models along supply chain position and servitisation: An empirical investigation of European manufacturers
Competitive pressures of the world economy are continuously reshaping the global supply chains of manufacturing firms. At the same time, global competition is altering the nature of output offered by manufacturers, shifting it towards a higher share of service elements. The goal of this paper is to investigate how these two factors are combined, using a sample of manufacturing companies from 13 European countries belonging to the assembly industries of fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment. The results indicate that different business models became dominant in the less developed Eastern European and the developed Western European region. Involving measures of business performance and reasons for plant location, this study also argues that in terms of service offerings and supply chain position, other types of business models can coexist and successfully prevail in the two regions
